In reviewing the live stream where they accidentally revealed the leader list. I have noticed right at the tail end that they now have restricted naming your units to the ones who have 2 promotions. This seems to be a step backwards from what they originally promised when they first announced.... So now I am curious, what else do you all think they are gonna walk back on? Obviously this is a trivial part of the game that many probably don't care about. I just want to get a gauge on what people think.

First it was noted they cut large amounts of mid-game units out(still being debated), then the combined unit icon issue we saw with fleets, and now this name issue which apparently no one caught or if they did I missed it. A slippery slope argument to be sure but with these tiny parts being changed with little mentioned about them; my concern is when will they actively state these things are being changed. It is quite possible to yank other features as well which would be very disappointing.

1) Naming units is indeed trivial. So much so that I can't recall ever doing it in any version of Civ. I'm sure there were a handful of times. I missed the part where they indicated you could re-name units anytime. It may very well be out there, I do not recall it.

2) Did they actually indicate what the fleet assets were going to look like? I do not recall them saying anything specific.

3) Cutting units? I am not privy to the original Civ 6 design docs so I have no idea if anything was cut or not.

I'm not concerned. Hopefully they can stay on budget and on the time schedule they are operating under.

The stuff you claim "they walked back on" sounds like stuff you might have dreamed or assumed. I absolutely could be wrong but I don't recall announcements.

I hope we can name units at any point- I like keeping track fo different units histories through the ages by giving them battalion/legion/ship names etc

I do not recall anyone saying that you could rename units at any time (like cities). Ed did say that you had the option of writing your own name in the field instead of using what the randomizer created.

He did say that the feature was analogous to soldiers in X-Com 2 earning a nickname after advancing a few levels.

Ed did mention that now there was a limit to how much XP a unit can earn from fighting barbarians. It looked like it was currently set at halfway to promotion level 2 (the archer in the N of the map). It isn't surprising they are doing that for balancing so you can't just farm barbarians. But it does imply that you'll need to kill non-barbarians to get to naming units.

You're right, they have yet to state which units are going to be in the game (although speculation abounds thanks to the leaked tech tree), and further correct in the animation not being discussed outside these here forums. But the point I was trying to articulate is that we did have during the first few game play videos, information that things such as naming the units was an unrestricted option no longer tied to promotion. Don't get me wrong I originally hated the freaking art choice, but in the end I pre-ordered so I'm of the mindset that I want to see a success.

So to more precisely reveal my concerns is that,

1) There will be very reduced units and an oversimplification due to CiV having way too many units to choose from. (Ie: musketmen don't upgrade till the atomic era into modern infantry...)

2) While trivial the naming option has now been re-tied to promotions.

3) All the systems from CiV were going to be in Civ 6, then suddenly World Congress got yanked. (This was stated then they had to clarify shortly thereafter this feature was gone for now. Although, this makes sense as they have re-worked the diplomacy game substantially.)

4) The art style chosen for the game is supposed to be for "readability" yet when you have powerful fleets they only change the icon not the actual unit graphic.

Maybe it is just me hoping for too much, but my concern is when things that are small "get walked back" or exaggerated in the case of CiV vanilla worry begins to abound. I personally hope this game knocks it outta the park.

There was a limit in CiV as well just never clearly stated before launch.

Could you rename units in Civ 5? I don't recall doing it, just the option to change city names. I believe it was possible in Civ 4.

Yea I stumbled on it one day... When you get a promotion click the unit name before promoting it and you could type what you wished.

1) That's a reasonable concern.

2) Where was it ever stated it wasn't?

3) They very clearly stated it was dropped right after they revealed the game. They clearly stated all systems were in but world congress because they could not come up with a good way to implement it. I think that's French for "we only have x amount of time so we got in what we could". I never heard them say everything was in without that caveat.

4) Art assets are likely not finished. I completely agree we need to be able to see that.

I hope it's awesome too. I honestly don't believe they "walked back" anything from what they have told us. I think you may have made assumptions . Plus, it's not finished yet, although I would assume it's getting close (4 -5 weeks out).

Not to me. To me, its a pretty big deal.

I'm with you but I know some don't care and that is perfectly alright in my book. Just don't advertise in the first few China game play videos that unit naming is at any time then suddenly before release yank it an say no you gotta promote first. Because that certainly will get me jittery right before launch. Kinda gets me wondering what else have they told me I get an now won't. Like the option to let the day night cycle run; for all we know it could be a simple slider next to the turn button now but they have figured it is better for us to find out after we get the game... All speculation but still relevant to my concern.

You do worry alot don't you?

So it was tied to a promotion.

Originally then in the first video where we got our first look at the Oracle wonder was where the devs mention you could rename units at any time. But strangely enough I cannot for the life of me locate that video. It was the one where they brought up cliffs and were at the extreme right of a continent.

I guess a lot of people is missing gamecon streams, one stream spend time on naming units.

In V you could name units as long as the unit had a promotion pending.

They made a better UI, actual button on the unit, earned after 2nd (?) promotion, isn't part of the promotion UI, so you can promote and later name. The naming UI gives you a random button, if you need inspiration.

Well, you could very well be right. The game is in active development. Stuff will change before release.

Let's hope we get a functional AI, everything else looks great to me at this point.

Been burned by quite a few games; I originally bought CiV because they emphasized extensive trade abilities and deep diplomacy... then what we got in vanilla was well, not that. I enjoy tons of series an have had my fair share of lemons of games from those series. Just something I don't wanna see, especially with Civ. If something is not gonna be in the game, I'm of the mind of just tell me so I know before I buy. I don't want to have to discover, oh that actually isn't in here or they exaggerated this feature.

Definitely an excellent improvement, I just wish they had not originally said you could rename the unit any time then now it has been clarified that it is still tied to the promotion.

Agreed, I really hope they knock this bad boy outta the park! I'm just concerned now that the AI improvements may be heavily exaggerated. Especially with me taking notice of these little trivial things.
