Naming Units Now Restricted to Lvl 2 Promoted Units

In reviewing the live stream where they accidentally revealed the leader list. I have noticed right at the tail end that they now have restricted naming your units to the ones who have 2 promotions. This seems to be a step backwards from what they originally promised when they first announced.... So now I am curious, what else do you all think they are gonna walk back on? Obviously this is a trivial part of the game that many probably don't care about. I just want to get a gauge on what people think.

I don't remember anything saying you could do it anytime, just that you could do it. However, even if they did change it how is it a "walk back" I mean tying it to a promo isn't like they removed a feature, they just changed how it worked (if that was the case, which, again, I don't think anyone remembers)?

Could you rename units in Civ 5? I don't recall doing it, just the option to change city names.
It was hidden in with promotions so was often an overlooked feature.

In the older games, while I rarely, if ever, renamed land units, I almost always did with my naval units. I even had a list of names that I used per civ specific to the class of ship. Some naval types I would name after cities of the civ that I was playing, some after famous people from that civ. I also used fish, animals, and mythical beasts for some ship types and "power" words like Enterprise, Endeavor, Independence, Constellation, Explorer... And the like.

I'd also use special prefixes for the names depending on the civ... USS for America, RSS for Rome, etc.

Now that terrain is actually important I may actually rename some units, as to not loose track of my amphibious cliff ignoring special forces for example (probably even more important with Vikings)

I don't remember them saying anything about the naming being able to be changed at anytime. I've watched all the Civ video's on YouTube but can't recall that. It's not something that I really look for though so I may have missed it.

As for there being less units, I don't mind that. Hopefully they get the balance right.

I pre-ordered the 25 year aniversary so hopefully it's a fun game. If not, oh well, I'll still play it.

They have demonstrated it. They showed an interface where they can be given a name that is randomly generated, but you can change the name yourself too.

I like the fact it is still possible and if it starts at level 2 promotion fine also, as I actually always waited until this second promotion anyway before naming the units in CiV. They had to proof themselves before I was willing to get attached to them :D.

But it is not the most feature important feature overall, but one enhancing the emotional bonding with your civ...

I saw that a gamescom but that was only when they got to level 2, I was talking about being told that you could rename them at any time - I don't remember them saying that.

Perhaps the confusion relates to the fact that in Civ 5 you could only change the unit's name at the moment you were promoting the unit, and not between promotions, while in Civ 6 it appears you can rename the unit any time after the second promotion (not limited to the moment of promotion).

I probably won't ever use the renaming units feature, but whats this about fleet icons been downgraded? Did they say the unit graphics would change?

Did they say the unit graphics would change?

I'm pretty sure they have never talked about the appearance of fleets, armies or corps. The clip in the Spain video was the first presentation of the concept.

The two stars on the icon would also be a way for it to translate over to the strategic view.

I think we're probably over-analyzing and being overly-critical of what was probably a slightly wrongly-worded off-hand comment made about something that was still under development.

Also, I'm being highly and rightly critical of my overuse of dashes in that previous sentences. You suck, SammyKhalifa.
