Napoleon Total War -CiV should take a look at that!

a) What on earth does Steam have to do with replayability? Replayability in Civ comes from playing random maps, as opposed to a handful of fixed scenario/campaign maps.

b) There has been no statement from Firaxis or 2K that there will be any DLC for Civ5 other than the initial deluxe offerings (some extra maps and Babylon). But even if there had, what on earth would this have to do with replayability?

I swear, people just take everything they're like and conflate them all together, without actually thinking about what they're saying.

I swear, selling individual civilizations as DLC -- steam only DLC mind you -- actually limits the replayability of CIV. Don't know about you but one of the reasons I go back to CIV IV time and again is to try different civilizations.

Civ5 looks to offer far more replay value in this respect, because it seems like they're significantly increasing faction differentiation by giving unique traits, not just leader traits from a pool shared by all factions.

And they're not "selling individual civilizations as DLC". They have *one* extra civ as a deluxe edition bonus. They've never said they're going to sell a series of multiple extra civs as DLC.

Plus, the base game still has 18 civs. How does the existence of a 19th elsewhere reduce the replayability of the core game?
That makes no sense.

Please, not every thread needs to be about Steam. That's how they're doing their DRM. Live with it.

Babylon is DLC.

It's interesting to compare the Total War series with CIV because when SEGA/CA went to steam with the release of Empire: Total War, several things happened:

Although company promised most moddable game ever turned out game was extremely difficult to mod compared to earlier games like Medieval and Rome.

Compulsory Steam updates ruined gameplay for many; impossible to turn off.

Lot's of DLC for purchase, including special pre-order edition with extra units..

It would really surprise me if Steam-driven CIV V doesn't come with further DLC. DLC can limit replay ability. Case in point: Napoleon Total War is selling a Peninsular War DLC for $10. The main game doesn't include scripts for a Peninsular War (Spain & Portugal are scripted to be passive) even through the main game covers the same period. Accident? Might there be some exciting things that Firaxis would leave out of its game to sell DLC? It's certainly done so already by leaving Babylon out...

This summarizes it well:

Ten years ago, Babylon would have been included in the game. Maybe a Deluxe edition with a nice box and behind-the-scene stuff would have been available, but Babylon would have been in the game.

No one would have come here and cried about how they should have charged us more money for Babylon.

Don't encourage the slippery slope. You have no reason to do so. I am flabbergasted by people coming here to express how joyous they are that they can pay 10$ for a civ. Not even that long ago you could pay 20-30$ for an expansion with 15 times that amount of content.

So I guess we were all spoiled brats a few years back? Now some of us seem to have something more than short-term memory and remember how we used to be treated as customers, and somehow we're people with a strong sense of entitlement.

What are you defending? Seriously? Where is your interest here?

That above is the direction I expect 2K to force Firaxis to go, unless they "re-spawn" like another development studio.

One thing that Civ always lacked was combat. The never ending stacks were simply annoying. Im really looking forward to Civ V to see if the 1 unit/hex will improve this. Lets just hope so, but total war + civ? only if you are 15 and have nothing to do

You know there are people in the world who can come home after working the 9-5, spend some family time, and play games from 8-12 nightly, right? :p

That's me. Work, kids, dinner a bit of shopping maybe some DIY or cleaning in house. Kids in bed by 8:30. Internet & e-mails for half an hour and then 9pm to 12 gaming... four or five nights a week.

come on, it's gonna be civ 5, not napoleon total war:2

CA made good games once. Not since they went Steamworks (correlation does not imply causation, but it doesn't mean one is a symptom of the other)

Well, in Rhye and Fall, they mention "General Winter" which is Russia's unique ability... Some connection, I guess. On another note, what about Sherman Total War during the civil war??
