National Religion

Hey! I'm older than dirt! (and I never had the disple... uh, pleasure of visiting that site before.) ;)

a "national" religion really isnt necessary, why dont people create their own religions and well have a "religions of Japanatica" thread?

That might lead to unsightly excommunication and such. :p

One thing we could do is adopt religions from people we meet. Like if we meet Babylon... groucho

Nestorian Christianity would be more realistic for Japan. It was relatively popular in the far east before Islam. Still, it was not very wide spread at all.

Catholic socialist.

It's just RPG. You don't have to convert. ;) But none of our ancient ancestors practiced Catholicism, Buddhism, Confucianism or any other "ism". Those all came about more recently, some more recently than others, as religious philosophy advanced. We can even have atheism after the discovery of Communism. ;)

Buddhism has been around for over 2000 years. Christian and Islam are the 2 youngest religions.

I like Immortal's idea. Then religion will be a part of a game and play a part in government and ideals like it has and is in history.

actually ba'hai and sikhism are the two youngest religions, but whose counting ;)

Confucious is close to Christianity, I think a couple of centuries after. Taoism a couple centuries after that.

Actually, Buddhism is closer to 3000 years old. The Indians are quite the thinkers, you know? But since we are starting at 4000BCE, I figure we've got a ways to go yet. ;)

I suggest that we vote on state religion by the following inventions

Mysticism
Polytheism
Monotheism
Theology
Communism

I would add that Modern Republics and Democracies do not have State Religions.

Am I missing something? I didn't think Shinto was still a State Religion.

Not "officially"

No, just as a matter of cultural dominance.

I guess I'm gonna have to be a very advanced citizen of our state. I wish to point out that no matter what time we discover monotheism, Christianity still becomes available as of 0AD. Christ died then and the religion was launched (Catholicism). Actually I don't mind this as an RPG element.

I wish to point out also that religions being in no way actually based on tech, Religions should spring up as available according to dates maybe. I suppose that because in our RPG section of the game here Catholicism is not around yet, I would have to be a Jew. Not sure when that religion started, but it was a LONG time ago.

So I guess I'm claiming as my RPG religion (until 0AD) Judaism, unless it isn't around yet, in which case I'm whatever the jews were before they worshiped God.

Perhaps this is a bad idea but if we are RPGing then are there leaders of each individual religion? I mean that adds a whole aspect to the game when our in game "Pope" calls for a crusade against the heathen Egyptians or whatever, or Father Comnenus posts 25 thesis on a door in the city of PDX (not to single you out, just useing examples), or if our Shiite friends were to call for a Jihad agaist the evils of France, or if our Confucian scholars were to call for more money towards cultural items, or our Buddhists demanded the end to a war. I can see where this could make things a little ugly though. Religion tends to start arguements.

Disclaimer: I don't mean to stereotype any religions here. I am simply putting out examples of things that our RPG element could do.

A Japanatican Jew. Now that is interesting. :crazyeye: Not being Jewish myself, I am a little hazy on the history of the religion, but I have seen on Discovery that some of the early theology was borrowed from conquerors like the Babylonians.

[offtopic]
Speaking of Babylonians, I had a guest at work tonight claiming that Babylon exists and Saddam Hussein has an underground city there. Go figure. :D

I know. ;)

Only when taken too seriously.

If I'm not mistaken, the religion probably became official after Cyrus release the Jews from slavery and they headed for the coast. I could be wrong, but I think that sums it up.

One last off topic post about the jewish people:

Most often, jewish people refer to the covenant between the "children of Israel" and the most high when Moses brought down the covenant. Thats when the people started to see themselves as a people.

When that was: Most often it is considered around 13th century BCE.

Honestly I think there is only one way to go here:

We have to invent our own religion.

Never done it before, should be quite fun, especially if we tie it to the tech tree, current government, president etc. You never know, we might come up with something quite good. Maybe even good enough for inclusion into Civ4 :D
