The mayans converted most of my cities to buddhism. I ended up capturing their holy city and a great prophet but I accidentally reconverted my holy city back to buddhism with it and now there are no cities with my native religion. Will my native religion come back on its own? Will a missionary, inq etc from one of my buddhist cities be able to eliminate buddhism and reintroduce my religion?

If you have an inquisitor of YOUR religion available, you can remove buddhism from your holy city and then build more inquisitors there to "cleanse" your other cities. You can not use missionaries/inquisitors built in buddhism cities, because they will be of that religion.

I am not sure how it is with prophets. These might still be of your original religion, and if so, you can use them to reconvert your cities.

Your holy city status should reassert itself, and eventually reconvert your capital, but it will take a long time if there are a bunch of Buddhist cities around your capital. A Great Prophet generated in your capital will also be of your own religion, so you can also wait for that.

As Aldor notes, do NOT use an inquisitor or missionary bought in a Buddhist city.

You just have to wait until your Holy City wins over the foreign religion, but check if you can buy any of their preferred buildings as well. It can be quite interesting to get pagoda's and cathredrals or whatever. Those buildings will be will be lifelong, if you happen to buy "for instance" a Maya building.

Do not let other religions' prophets to spread their religion to your cities and keep a few inquisitors around your holy city.

a few days ago in my one city challange campaing, india sent a prophet to my city and if I didnt capture them they would convert my only city and I didnt have any inquisitors. anyway all world against me now, after capture indian prophet. but now, almost entire map converted to my religion and it's totally worth it :D

Is it possible to generate a Great Prophet from faith (not purchased in a city)? That should be with your religion.

Yes, they auto-generate in your holy city at set amounts (200, 300, 500, 800 for standard speed) until you hit the industrial era. However, even if the holy city's current religion is Buddhism, even a prophet that's faith-purchased in that city will be of the original religion. It MUST have some religion to be able to purchase a prophet.

Well, I was specifically asking if it was possible in his stage of his specific game. I know how it generally works (although I didn't realize you could purchase a Great Prophet of your religion if you have some of your religion).

Its still possible from what I see although I've been purchasing monastaries delaying it. Anyways New York got autoconverted due to pressure so Buddhism is now one of the most widespread religions in the world despite the Mayans being long gone..germany finished them off awhile back.

Any chance Buddhism is better?

Depends on what the two religions' pantheon and follower beliefs are -- sometimes the other religion is more attractive/useful than your own (particularly in light of what you have to do to preserve your religion). And, if your religion isn't really going to expand, then your founder and enhancer beliefs may be effectively useless. I've had a number of games where my early efforts to get religion going went for naught as another religion swamped me. Just like other early strategy plans may have to be adjusted based on later developments, there are times when it makes sense to throw in the religion towel and focus your energies on some other part of your game.

doesn't matter does it? Even though I have their holy city there is no way for me to benefit from the founder belief or maybe even the enhancer?

What's the follower belief? Does it make it worthwhile?
