About hurricanes, it could be cool to see a divine wind kind of thing.
Remember that we are talking about 50 years for the biggest turn, 1 year is the shortest.

Keeping in mind the massive destruction as well as the huge economic impact Hurricane Katrina is sure to have, I believe hurrricanes should be a part of the game.

I second that opinion. Natural disaters throughout history have had a dramatic impact on civilizations:
  • Santorini's volcanic explosion and the subsequent tsunami may have crippled the Minoan civilization of Crete, if not destroyed it outright.
  • Flooding on the Mesopotamian river valleys may have inspired the legends of the Great Flood featured in the stories of Gilgamesh and Noah.
  • The Egyptians are said to have migrated out of the interior of Libya as the Sahara Desert grew following the end of the latest of the great ice ages.

I'm from Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Katrina has destroyed New Orleans. I won't go into any detail about whats going on down here cause you should know but I ask that you all do not talk about the catastrophe in a joking manner, or about how "cool" it will be to destroy a large city like New Orleans. thank you.

I don't think anyone's intention here is to make light of disastrous events that have affected people. We're only discussing whether it would be good, bad, fun or whatever else reasons that it should or should not be used in a game of Civilization. If things get mentioned like destroying "this" city with "that" natural disaster, its either ...
a) stating a fact that its happened; or
b) an in-game what ifs NOT to be taken literally

The Great Red Spot had been blowing for 300 years. :p

...Well then how about having actual tectonic plates and the ground can move around a bit. Then you can research geology and try to predict earthquakes and prepare your cities that are on fault lines.

Researching technologies could prevent disasters but not stop it, so if you research geology you could sort of "install" some kind of earthquake kit in your city.

disasters-prevention tech

Floods-Seasonal patterns
Storms-Metriology (spelling)
Volcano, earthquakes, tsunami-geology
Plague-medicine/sanitation
Climatic Change-ecology
Famines-Refridgiration
Alien invasion-Missile shields?
Godzilla-fission/ecology?

Remember, this is just a mere fantasy ;)
