I'd like to see some natural worders of the world as objects on the map. For Example:

Galapagos Islands: First to discover gains 1 tech

Niagra Falls: Controling city gains +50% tax revenue

Great Barrier Reef: Tiles containing this get +1 Food, +2 Commerce. Ships crossing the reef have a chance of sinking, unless it is own territory.

Etc.

I like the idea but how would it work in practice.

The beaks on the birds in the Galapagos Islands only lead to scientific advance because other advances had been made. You could have this appear after some other tech. So you would have to explore again if not within someones borders.
Niagra would have reduced trade before it became an tourist attraction. Perhaps when the first civ gets steam all the cities in the world with waterfalls in BFC have poll to decide which one is Niagra.
Great Barrier Reef always.

Great idea!

You could also have bad ones too:

The Bermuda Triangle: Give it a range of tiles and ships passing through it have a chance of sinking. Maybe the first to discover it knows exactly what tiles make it up and the rest just have to guess.

Sahara Desert: All military units passing through it before a certain tech take small amounts of damage each turn, no healing within it, and mobile units not on friendly roads can only move 1 space.

Monument Valley gives gold in desert after Holywood built

Ayres Rock religious bonus always

Surtsey science bonus for x turns after library.
Jurassic Coast science and trade bonus after education

Not sure where this fits in, so Ill stick it here.

I always thought the Aztecs should be able to have Jungled Cities. These would receive an additional defense bonus, but suffer unhealthy penalties, and preclude them from certain buildings ie. airports. Jungles could be removed to convert the city back to normal.

The way I see all these examples could be put by random events (as some already exists in this way).

But you can already build in jungles.

To an extent you are right, but I think they could be elaborated on.

*Differentiated graphics on the map (purely for aesthetic purposes)

*These locations would be discovered, and therefore encourage exploration in the early game.

*The locations would last the whole game and could be captured by other civs.

*For time specific natural wonders, they may be placed off the coast and inaccessable until caravels, or when you discover the tech, it reveals a hidden wonder on the map and tells you the bonus along with the explanation.

i like this idea, natural beauty though is a given so you should be able to spot them at any time in the game, but they may only serve a purpose once a technology is researched (such as optics for a Galapagos islands etc)
while we are on natural beauty what about natural disasters? fault lines etc.

It would be in the middle of an ocean somewhere. You wouldn't be able to get to it before Optics.

I'm not sure what the benefit should be - these were just suggestions.

for a beginning natural beauty creates culture in some form so there is the first benefit.
second perhaps it could increase great persons appearance(artists scientists etc)
thirdly, in the latter game (i think railways/steam) that once this is researched tourism should begin to thrive then with flight it should increase again (possibly internet too)

I've been playing the Fall From Heaven II mod recently and I really like the idea of the unique features introduced there. Basically each unique feature has a chance to appear in a given game and the effects of controlling a feature are for example:
  • +1 happy in nearby cities, +3 commerce, additional +2 with Construction, additional +2 with Trade
  • +3 production in nearby cities, +2 with Education, +2 with Feudalism
  • +25% strength for all units within 3 tiles
  • once per game a player may end all wars he is in
  • spawns a specific Barbarian unit if there's an enemy unit nearby

So nothing game-breaking, but still nice bonuses.

How about some way of building such unique terrain features? Something like Wonders only outside cities and affecting a larger area.

I agree. I think the wonders should be naturally formed, and controlled by players, not chosen by players.

Sorry I did not make my self clear.

The game would chose from the cities near waterfalls, which had the best waterfall when a cert tech was reached.

What if the natural wonders increased the rate of pop. growth. People would naturally want to migrate to places having these wonders, and this could be reflected in a smaller amount of food needed for pop growth.
