we all have to admit navies are pretty much always useless except sometimes. but in the real world navies have an important role in the world. what are you suggestions to make navies more powerful.

i was thinking why don't we give all navy units except aircraft carriers, ironclad, galley, caravel, galleon, and transport the hidden nationality ability. Firaxis made the hidden nationality units the high priority of AIs. this would mean the AI would make huge navies=navy battles:)

the problem though is then you won't officially declare war against anyone and the AI will keep attacking your vessels.

what do you guys think about my idea and any other suggestions?

I think we should just change all the AIs production priorities so that they want to build bigger navies, therefore use more ships.

@norwegianviking

taht is actually a pretty good idea and i never thought about doing that

Yo Blackbirdie, the navies could be more important if bombardment capabilities were increased and if the ships could have a higher movement count. Also all of the warships should probably have a ZOC. Other than that I think navies are O.K. but the AIs already stack enough of them.

i agree, also get rid of ironclads in modern age, they're practically useless.

The basic problem with naval warfare in CivIII is that there's precious little for fleets to do. Blocades are generally impractical. Shore bombardments are of limited use. You have no merchant fleets to protect. As soon as Airports come available, you only need a foothold on a continent, and then you can fly in unlimited amounts of troops no matter how many ships the enemy places in the seas between. The only critical function that remains to navies is to protect amphibious landings.

And to stop enemy transports attempting to deliver troops.

I normally build up a big navy, for Shore bombardment, then have carriers to bomb the in land places. It helps taking out the roads/railroads to slow down the enemy counterattack.

Uhhh........Couldn't those nukes be used for more practical purposes? Like enemy cities? :hmm:

Or that Spearman that killed your Tank.
