I have avoided posting in this thread for a while because I didn't want to sound like an arrogant blind homer and I didn't want to jinx my team. To those who don't know it should be obvious from my location that I am a Wolves fan. They have been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for seven straight years but I think that stat means nothing as far as judging this years team. It is still early but they are starting to have the feel of destiny this year. They have played poorly for the last three weeks but have only lost two games despite it; that is what Championship teams do. While people talk about the Lakers playing poorly because of injuries it should be noted that the Wolves have been tearing through the league with three of their top six players injured for the season so far. Like MJ, Kevin Garnett has gotten better every season and this year's improvements have put him with the NBA's all time elite. He is the real deal, a throwback to the NBA's glory days. He is unselfish and hasn't taken a posession off his entire career, he is made of the same stuff as Bird, Bill Russel, Magic, etc.; he is a different species than most of today's players. He has been like this in relative obsurity in Minnesota for so long but now he has brought it to such a high level that the rest of the world can no longer ignore it. Now the rest of you can see on a regular basis what we in Minnesota have been watching for years, he has a gift, of both athletic skill and personality. He is a better scorer and a better defender than he has ever been, this is also the first time he has had teammates who were top tier players in their prime. His personality turns a bunch of players into a cohesive team - it has always done so. In previous years he was leading a bunch of hacks into the playoffs.
I think Sacremento and Indiana are the other Championship caliber teams. We could see a competitive NBA final for the first time since Jordan left the Bulls. I especially like Sacremento, with Webber out Peja is lighting it up like an MVP canidate and the rest of the team is outstanding, when Webber returns I think they will be better. I am not a Laker believer, Shaq is past his prime and no longer plays with passion, Malone is suddenly an old man playing a young man's game, Kobe is destracted and while he is a great player I don't think he is a dominant player who can will a team to a title like MJ. Gary Payton is the only reliably great player they have and he is the fourth man on the team.
The Wolves are starting to look like a team of destiny, Sacremento too. Their four previous games against each other have all gone to overtime, each has won two. The great thing about the NBA this year is that unlike previous years there is no team that stands above the others. There are 5 to 7 teams that could possibly win it all. I look forward to an exciting Spring. No matter what happens it should be the most interesting basketball Spring in years.
edit: I apologize for any spelling or gramatical errors, I watched tonight's game versus Orlando from a bar.
