NC LXXVI: Charlemagne of the Holy Roman Empire

First time playing one of the forum games on CivFanatics. I'll go Immortal/Normal.

Have It Your Way: The Charlie Horse Chronicles

4000 BC - 1 AD
Spoiler :
Turn 0 (4000 BC): I laughed upon seeing the starting position. Nothing but sheep and ivory? This will be a treat. I debated on whether to settle two east on the plains hill, but I couldn't justify the move, so I ultimately settled in place. Might as well start researching Animal Husbandry; I need to improve what little food I have. I'm building a worker first, but that's a no-brainer.

Turn 13 (3480 BC): Finished Animal Husbandry. There's horse in my capital? Sweet. I've got enough production around here; if there's an AI close enough, perhaps I'll rush with horse archers. Or war elephants. Trolololol. I'm going for Mining next; I have an unforested hill, and I need to open the way to Bronze Working.

Also, on the same turn, my scout located Zara Yaqob of Ethiopia. He's a reasonable distance away, along the coast, in the middle of grassland forest and jungle. He might be the AI I'm looking to crush, but I'll scout around some more.

Turn 15 (3400 BC): My worker's finished, and I've moved him to the plains/sheep/hill by the river. Next up on my capital's build list: Warriors. Lots of warriors. I need to break the fog of war surrounding my capital.

Turn 20 (3200 BC): Met Sitting Bull via a work boat near Zara. Could be worse.

Turn 21 (3160 BC): Mining's finished. The Wheel's next. The ivory's not by a river, so I'll need to road the tile for +1 Happiness.

Turn 25 (3000 BC): Met Napoleon through his scout west of Zara. I haven't met anyone to my capital's north or east, though. Where am I on this map?

Turn 27 (2920 BC):

CIVIV-Charlie001.png

Marble? With all of these hills and forests, I have a shot at claiming some of the game's marble wonders.

Turn 29 (2840 BC): The Wheel's finished. Writing's next; I'll need it no matter what I decide to pursue.

Turn 39 (2440 BC): My capital just grew to four, and I decided to build a settler instead of more warriors. Aachen's working all of its resources; that's good enough. The settler will only take five turns.

Turn 42 (2320 BC): Writing's finished. Research is down to 70% courtesy of my warrior spam, but that's okay. Opened borders with Zara, Sitting Bull, and Napoleon; the latter two are each other's worst enemies. I approve of this. My settler will be finished in two turns, but there's no way I can justify settling for the marble right now. I need a valuable city, something which can stand and grow on its own. Consequently, Agriculture is next. There's some dry wheat nearby... which isn't inspiring, but at least it's food.

Turn 47 (2120 BC):

CIVIV-Charlie002.png

I just settled Prague. I still haven't met anyone to my north or east except for barbarians. Why do I get the sneaking suspicion I'm alone up here? These mountain peaks may be all that's saving me from a deluge of barbarians.

Turn 52 (1920 BC): Agriculture finished. Peculiarly, I'm going Fishing next, as the only good food exists on the coast. I will want Pottery eventually, though, for access to granaries. I'm going to need a lot of help growing these cities.

Turn 55 (1800 BC): Vienna settled at the clam site four south of Aachen. Fishing in three turns.

Turn 58 (1680 BC): Fishing's done. I think I need the granaries. Pottery's next. None of the AIs I've met have Alphabet.

Turn 65 (1400 BC): Nuremberg settled at the clam site between Zara and myself. I needed to claim that site before he did. I shifted Aachen from building workers and settlers to chariots; the wave of barbarian pressure I feared from the east has
arrived, and my warriors can't survive forever.

Turn 67 (1320 BC): Pottery finished. Bronze Working's next. I need to chop down these forests, and still no one has Alphabet.

Turn 71 (1160 BC): The Great Wall finally goes... to Zara. The AI must also be having a hard time on this map for it to go so late.

Turn 84 (775 BC):

CIVIV-Charlie003.png

Bronze Working's finally finished. A spawnbusting chariot has spotted one source of copper far to my north, but that's it. I have espionage on Zara, and I can see he's two turns away from Writing. I still haven't met anyone else; this seems like a huge continent for only four civs. This looks like a very slow tech game for everyone, but I'm still going Aesthetics next. The AI usually ignores it. Eventually, someone will get Alphabet, and I can make some good trades.

Turn 99 (400 BC):

CIVIV-Charlie004.png

Aesthetics is done. No one I've met has Alphabet, but Zara picked up Hinduism, which probably means someone else is on this continent. I'm going after Masonry next, followed by settling a city next to the marble. I really want The Great Library.

My chariots have good odds versus archers on flat terrain, but I am continually getting swarmed by barbarian archers from the northeast. For the time being, Prague is permanently on chariot production.

Augsburg's not an amazing city, but it still is a city, and it appears I have this land entirely to myself. If I can hold on until Currency (or find a few gold tiles up here), these money woes will go away.

Turn 101 (375 BC): Napoleon got Alphabet. I traded him Aesthetics for Iron Working and Sailing. There's an iron tile next to Nuremberg; if I hadn't settled this city in Zara's face, back when I thought it only had clams, I may not have had it.

Turn 113 (50 BC):

CIVIV-Charlie005.png

Just finished grabbing Literature; I also had to snag Polytheism, but that didn't take very long. Four of my cities are each running two scientists, allowing me to supplement my research despite my pitiful economy. Another settler will be out of Aachen in eight turns, finally allowing me to settle the marble site.

I'm getting another great scientist in six turns from Prague. I used my first to create an academy in Aachen; additional ones likely will be settled in my capital due to my low slider, but I may change my mind depending on the situation.

Things have changed diplomatically. Sitting Bull founded Confucianism, and it spread over to Napoleon. Now they're no longer worst enemies. Instead, Napoleon's worst enemy is Zara. Also, courtesy of the Foreign Advisor, I discovered that Zara is the worst enemy of Suryavarman II - I haven't yet met Sury, but I presume he's somewhere on this continent and he's running a different religion.

Truly, I'm looking forward to refusing more requests from Napoleon. He'd probably find a way to kill me if he had open borders with Zara, but the Ethiopians are definitely in the way.

1-1000 AD
Spoiler :
Turn 127 (300 AD): Finished The Statue of Zeus in Nuremberg. I primarily built it to protect my border against Zara. Speaking of Zara, I just cancelled my open borders with him. He was moving several swordsmen through my territory to capture the barbarian city near Prague. No.

Turn 132 (425 AD): Finished researching Currency and built The Great Library this turn. In order to get Currency so quickly, I had traded Aesthetics to Zara for Meditation, Monotheism, and 100 gold; the deficit research netted me my objective. Music's next to secure the free Great Artist followed by Code of Laws to kick my maintenance troubles in the teeth.

Turn 138 (560 AD): Traded Currency and Meditation to Napoleon for Monarchy and Archery, along with Clams for Dye to improve my happiness. I'm tempted to switch into Hereditary Rule now, but I think I will wait until I get Music. I will probably use the free Great Artist on a Golden Age to jumpstart my economy. Also, I settled my seventh city, Ulm, two turns ago near the copper to the north.

Turn 142 (640 AD): I'm the first to Music! Great Artist on Golden Age, heading for Code of Laws (5 turns), building Sistine Chapel in Aachen (15 turns), and switching to Hereditary Rule and Slavery.

Turn 147 (740 AD): Finally met Sury after he built the Apostolic Palace (and Buddhism had spread to two of my cities). His -4 disposition for trading with his worst enemy (Zara) is nullfied by +2 for voting for him plus an additional +4 from trading Aesthetics to him for Priesthood and 40 gold.

Turn 151 (820 AD):

CIVIV-Charlie006.png

Finished The Sistine Chapel. For 820 AD on Immortal, my beakers per turn is horrendous, but I'm not far from a tech lead. The religious strife on this map and lack of a strong techer have combined to slow down the entire continent. I'm sure there are other AI somewhere, but I haven't yet met them.

Also note that Sury and Zara are both plotting war. I highly doubt I'm in danger, but I'll prepare some defenses in Nuremberg just in case.

Turn 155 (900 AD): Finished Civil Service. Gave Literature to Sury by request. Traded Civil Service and Literature to Sitting Bull for Feudalism. Researching Paper, probably followed by Education.

1000 AD - 1230 AD
Spoiler :
Turn 162 (1020 AD):

CIVIV-Charlie007.png

Finished Paper. Received Sitting Bull's map for free by request. Turns out he's on his own little continent. Also, I'm grabbing Construction first before Education; the lack of bridges is getting annoying, and I want access to War Elephants just in case.

Turn 163 (1030 AD): Sury declares war on Zara. Zara had been massing troops on my border with him. Looks like I won't be at war after all.

Turn 172 (1120 AD): After taking at least one of Zara's cities, Sury successfully calls an end to the war through the AP.

Turn 183 (1230 AD):

CIVIV-Charlie008.png

Finished Education. My beaker rate remains terrible, but I'm the only civ I know with Education. I could have been researching quicker, but I've actually been expanding - after I captured a barbarian city last turn, I'm up to ten cities. Honestly, I'm not sure WHY I'm expanding; I think this map is screwing with my head. Certainly, this is the worst I've done on Immortal in a long time, but here I am, continuing to settle cities which are mediocre at best and impair my chances of winning the race to Liberalism.

Diplomacy-wise, I traded Music to both Sury and Sitting Bull for a total of Calendar, Horseback Riding, and 80 gold. The gold will be used to fund deficit research, and I've taken to begging for gold from all of the pleased civilizations. Considering my superior production, if I can obtain a significant tech advantage (Read: Cavalry versus Longbows), I shouldn't have any trouble bruteforcing my way to victory.

Despite my ineptitude, I'm actually pleased with my performance thus far. This map script's definitely a curveball, but the AI has also been impeded by the map specs - I've never before seen The Oracle last until 375 BC on Immortal. So long as I keep my head, I should be victorious.

Noble epic 1300bc.
Spoiler :

Settled one south after scout revealed riverside grassland. Up to 4 cities, nabbed stonehenge and oracle (Col/Confu) in capital. Only contact so far is Zara and Nap from south west. Nuremberg covers that bit and is holy city for nice culture. Early days but ok so far.

1992 Diplomation

Spoiler :

With nothing better to do, I decide to tech hard and grab all the modern wonders. Vic does grab hollywood, but meh. Internet gets me Mass Media and something else; that's cool. My vassals are keeping up in tech, which proved helpful.

Anyhow, Vic proves to be the only real threat, so killing her will end the game. I spend a while building up an invasion force only to find... What? I should have just attacked earlier. She has no real fleet either.

Civ4ScreenShot0047-1.jpg

She eventually shows up with aircraft and artillery, but redcoats aren't a match for marines or mech infantry.

Since I didn't occupy a lot of the stupid land, I won't be vying for domination, but I do have a lot of the world's pop. Conquest is possible but Vic won't cap despite having 4 of her major coastal cities razed and her capital conquered.

But Wilem builds the UN, so I decide to just end it.

Spoiler :

After taking a look at the map in general, Sury's start is way too good, relative to ours and he will run away if he isn't stopped. He just has so much grassland too himself, plus he's an expand freak. I'm quite sure I can't win this map on monarch at all. :/

Yep it's a loss. He launches the spaceship despite civic swaps via espionage every 5 turns.

The goal should have been to go Sury when I went nappy.

All you had to do was DoW on him, and he'd auto-spam a billion units instead of teching. You could have kept him into the stone ages. BTW, he doesn't go for commerce, so his way of teching is to force hammers into beakers, but when he builds units he can't do that.

Instead, he'll build and build until he's determined he has a proper size SoD, then when he marches his SoD he'll put all cities to work beakers until that stack gets raped, then he goes back to unit spam again.

Since i was one of the people who said to play this Script (purely cause never played it before) i guess i should get round to playing the game :P

I decided to try out Mylene's bulbing strat for early maces/trebs, but figured I'd need some help on this map. So I played with 3 crutches: monarch, epic, hut on/events off.

First, I fired up a test game: emperor/pangaea, no huts or events. On average land (nothing outstanding, no gold/gems in BFC, etc) I wiped the map, winning domination around 1200AD. The question is whether it would work on this map with the crap land we got.

Thru 1515AD:

Spoiler :

SIP, AH, worker first. I had absolutely unbelievable hut luck this game: 2 scouts, a couple hundred gold, 2 XP (promoted scouts to G2, which was great on this map), a warrior, and a string of techs (AG, masonry, BW, HBR, writing, math-partial). So that's gonna really skew the results on this one.

Archers got me thru the barb onslaught. Meanwhile, I settled the marble first and chopped out the Oracle there for MC. Next city was the SE wheat/sheep/fish which became my HE city. 3rd city was a SW blocker to claim the clams (and iron, as it turned out later). I ran 2 scientists in the capital and later built the GL there. I eventually got 6 GSs: 1st bulbeb machinery, 2nd bulbed engineering, 3rd built an academy in the capital, 4th bulbed education, 5th bulbed PP. I also popped 2 GPs and got the free music artist (golden age). I got to engineering by 80AD, but it was 800 more years before I was ready to declare on Zara (no whipping on this crappy land). I joined the jewish love-fest as soon as it spread to me.

Civ4ScreenShot0233.jpg

OFC, I forgot the check the AP (built by Nappy) vote, so right after taking the first city the war is stopped (I wasn't going to defy with judaism in all my cities). While waiting for the peace treaty to expire I accepted Nappy's offer for a fake war on Bull. This was a big mistake and a waste of time, since the next AP vote stopped the war against me (not so bad), but enforced ANOTHER 10 turn peace treaty with Zara even though I wasn't at war with him More firaxis BS.:mad::mad:

Finally, after 20 turns I get a chance to resume the war with Zara, failing to notice that he peace-vassaled to Sury. I tooke the rest of Zara's cities on this continent (he's got one city left on Bull's continent), then took peace with Sury. OFC, just before finishing up on Zara Nappy declares on me. So I take 3 of his cities (leaving him with only 3 left), but Sury declares on me again near the end of this war. He moves a big stack of knights/xbows next to the first Ethiopian city that I captured, but only brings 3 catapults. Initially I only have a longbow and 2 knechts there, but I whip a castle there and start piling CG3D2 longbows in there, along with some D4 longbows to soak up collateral, plus a bunch of WEs and more knechts/maces/xbows. There's no way he's gonna take that city, but the AP bails him out before he can attack.

Meanwhile, I'm in a pretty good position tech-wise:

Civ4ScreenShot0236.jpg

In around 12 turns gunpowder will be done, giving me cuirassiers. I'll turn the slider off and have a tech fire-sale to upgrade my WEs, while whipping out a bunch more. Then we'll see how Martian Granny likes to have them shoved down his throat.

Spoiler :
Yeah I agree. We got boned. Still I see players winning on immortal so I assume it's a mistake on my part. It was an uphill battle with nappy. Despite bulbing paper and most of education, taking nat. from lib and getting cav first I still only took 2 cities before having to buy him off. Later I returned with infantry and cannons. He had a vassal and I had to return yet again with tanks to hunt down enough of his cities to vassal him. Meanwhile sury is city with a defensive pact. Seemed a good idea. 2 threats. D. Pact 1 and wipe out other. Buy the time I was done with nappy there was just no way I could beat sury.

On a normal map I could place out 3-4 GOOD cities and have some OK spots leftover and go to town on an AI. The capitol was the only decent site. Prague was a serviceable early GS farm due to the 3 foods.

The other thing I can think of is I was attempting to use rush buy in the later wars. I flipped into full bottom civics except for state property after communism. That might have put me further behind. I probably would have done better if I implemented my spy economy much much earlier. Say hit communism then started.

I'll upload my 640 AD save if anyone wants a look. It's the last point I still felt like I was on track.

Thoughts:
Spoiler :

Trade Sury for Currency
No HR? Your cities are waiting and ready to grow beyond the happy cap.
Trade with anyone excess resource for GPT
Send those 2 archer guys up northwest to stop barbs that way
Take that barb city to the east

Well this just sucks...

Grrrrr. Dropped down to Immortal, but looks like I got myself into some trouble here. I'm posting my save so others can look and give me suggestions on a come-back. Each turn that goes by looks like things are going to get worse for me, and since I HAVE NEVER lost an Immortal game in like 5+ years, I refuse to go down, unless in a furry of flames.

Advice please...

Obs, I'm gonna give you a little advice, because I know its hard to learn this game and really get pro at it like Me.

1) You really should build more Workers. It as an advanced strategy to build 1.5 workers for each of your cities. I know, you probably haven't heard this craziness yet, but it's true.
2) Too much wonder spam is bad. Those are a lot of hammers you could have used elsewhere!
3)I think you've put too much focus on winning the game with the highest score possible. I would suggest perhaps deleting some of your units. You don't really need an army that big afterall. And what's the point of victory, if you can't afford to pay your empire afterwards.

Hope that helps, welcome to the forum!

1792 update:

Spoiler :

After taking Sury's first city, I looked closer at his land and realized that cuirassiers were not going to cut it: every single one of his cities was on a hill. So I took a peace treaty and set every city to build wealth while heading for rifling ASAP. I popped a GM who was sent to Paris for a TM; this allowed me to upgrade all of my cuirassiers to cavalry. Then I redeclared and moved my stack (with seige) to his first city. Once his defenses were bombed away, I went thru many attack, heal, attack, etc cycles until I finally was able to take the city; he had a huge number of units.

Once I had his gateway city, it was just a matter of luring his units in one direction with a small stack of cavalry, then sending a big stack of them in the opposite direction to take the lightly garrisoned city. I never used seige after that first city - even C2 pikes fortified on hills were no problem. I took all of his cities, whipping rathauses where needed. A GS bulbed most of chemistry, and I teched steel while finishing him off. I'm about 4 turns from SciMeth, communism is next. I've moved my stack to Nappy's borders - he's the next victim, but I'll probably cap him with 1 city left to get astro and MilSci from him. He only has a few grens so far, but cavalry will eat them for breakfast (I've probably got at least 20 C4-C5 cav, they should do nicely). Paris is his only city on a hill, but I've got cannon for that.

Continuing my Immortal/Normal game from here.

Have It Your Way: The Charlie Horse Chronicles

1935 Diplomatic Victory.

Mid-Game Reflection
Spoiler :
The early wonders went so late in this game. Had I known the AI would also be universally screwed on this map, I would have changed my research path and tried for both The Oracle and The Temple of Artemis. Also, after I got some sleep, I noticed I hadn't adopted Bureaucracy after I got Civil Service. 28 turns of no Bureaucracy? I need to stop playing late night Civ games.

1230 AD - 1600 AD
Spoiler :
Turn 196 (1360 AD):

CIVIV-Charlie009.png

Won a late Liberalism race, and I used it to snag Astronomy. I had trades going left and right between all of the civs (like the just-met Victoria, the founder of Hinduism, who appears to be on her own continent with the Dutch) to get the techs I needed along with the gold to keep running the slider.

CIVIV-Charlie010.png

My trades were fruitful, although not as fruitful as they could have been. Where's Mansa Musa when you need him?

Also, I revolted into Free Religion. Might as well get some benefit.

Turn 210 (1500 AD): Five turns until Replaceable Parts. Sury already has it, and both he and Napoleon are plotting. While Zara's still the worst enemy of Nappy and Sury, Sury's got the hatred of everyone else. I'm glad this game didn't turn into a lovefest.

I still have tentative plans for cavalry rushing, but I'm capable of holding off until infantry/artillery if need be.

Turn 214 (1520 AD): Sury declares war on Zara again.

Turn 224 (1570 AD):

CIVIV-Charlie011.png

I'm the first to Rifling, but Napoleon and Sury already have Replaceable Parts. No one's currently at war - Sury used the AP to bail himself out again like last time. Zara doesn't have Replaceable Parts yet, but I'm thinking of peacefully expanding through the rest of my territory and finally killing all of these barbarians. True, with Military Tradition, I could prepare for a cavalry war, but I don't want to remove the target of Sury and Nappy's wrath. Not yet.

1600 AD - 1900 AD
Spoiler :
Turn 236 (1630 AD):

CIVIV-Charlie012.png

Just finished Corporation. Zara still doesn't have Replaceable Parts. I still haven't met the Dutch. Deficit research is propelling me down the tech tree towards Assembly Line. 820 beakers per turn isn't amazing for this time period...

CIVIV-Charlie013.png

...but it's enough to keep me with the AI, and, in some cases, ahead. At any rate, I'm going to try and mass enough of an army to kill Zara before he gets rifles.

Turn 257 (1735 AD):

CIVIV-Charlie014.png

Magic Rifles didn't come fast enough to save Zara. He won't be of much use with just two cities, but I both like and pity him. Besides, I need to conserve all of my remaining military strength in case both Napoleon and Sury declare war on me.

Turn 268 (1790 AD): Napoleon declared war on me. I'm three turns away from Assembly Line, and he's attacking with Infantry. I'm not worried, but it will slow me down... especially when Sury declares.

Turn 271 (1802 AD): Surprising absolutely no one, Sury declared war on me. He's still missing Assembly Line, but I'm not. I don't think I can save my vassal, though. Good luck, Zara!

I knew capitulating Zara would likely make me the target of Napoleon and Suryavarman II, but I tried bribing them before I crushed Zara and didn't have enough oomph. I didn't want to face them both simultaneously, but I think it's the best shot I've got at killing their tech leads. As soon as I can force one of them to commit to a ceasefire, my life will become easier.

Turn 273 (1806 AD):

CIVIV-Charlie015.png

For what it's worth, Zara, you're buying me enough time to kill them both.

...Wait, Napoleon will talk to me?

CIVIV-Charlie016.png

Sometimes, I love this game.

Turn 293 (1846 AD):

CIVIV-Charlie017.png

Finally, I've breached Khmer soil. The past twenty turns have been spent fending off Sury's stacks, followed by liberating the Ethiopian city he took. Now, I'm in Sury's face, and he doesn't have enough fighters and bombers to expel my infantry and artillery. Yet.

CIVIV-Charlie018.png

On the other continent - I'm not counting Sitting Bull's island - Victoria just declared war on Willem. Coincidentally, this sent Napoleon straight into plotting for war. While Vicky and Nappy are still each other's worst enemies, I suspect Napoleon's preparing for Round 2 against me.

CIVIV-Charlie019.png

Technologically... well, I have some flaws, but I'm the only one with artillery.

Finally, Sitting Bull built the United Nations and currently resides as the Secretary General. I'm not worried about losing the game to a Diplomatic Victory, but I do believe I'll be forced to make some civic changes.

1900 AD - 1935 AD
Spoiler :
Turn 320 (1900 AD):

CIVIV-Charlie020.png

I've slowly continued to encroach upon Sury's land, using a mixed force combined with a fistful of artillery to break through his well-fortified cities. Undoubtedly, I would have been stuck in Debre Berban were it not for my Medic III Great General Explorer. His healing capabilities allowed me to survive in the face of Sury's withering air support. Speaking of Great Generals, I've put Imperialistic (and The Great Wall I captured from Zara) to good use, netting more Great Generals than I can ever remember having.

CIVIV-Charlie021.png

The tech tree is still depressing, but it could be worse. Victoria and Willem are still at war, so they're not threats for space. Sury has slowed considerably, but he managed to steal Artillery from me, and he's still got a tech lead. Napoleon and Sitting Bull are the two leaders of this game, and I suspect they've both been building Research in their cities (when not building wonders). The French dropped their war plans long ago; it's reasonable to conclude Napoleon's trying for space.

CIVIV-Charlie022.png

As I had predicted, Sitting Bull - along with all of the other AI - were pro-Environmentalism and pro-Emancipation. Thankfully, my population lead combined with my popularity eventually allowed me to become Secretary General, and I've been passing more sensible things.

I can't overstate how difficult - if not impossible - it would have been for me to invade Sury like this were it not for him frivolously wasting his hammers. Thankfully, he's elected to build Guided Missles, SAM Infantry, and Corporate Executives instead of more meaningful units. He won't capitulate yet, but this game should be mine if he does.

Turn 325 (1905 AD): Victoria and Willem make peace. I pass a successful ban on all nuclear weapons.

Turn 334 (1914 AD):

CIVIV-Charlie023.png

These have been a very long seventy-three turns, filled with so much slaughter and painstaking micro, but it's all worth it now. Sury's capitulated.

CIVIV-Charlie024.png

With Sury as my vassal, I can focus his research, preventing him from getting all the techs required to complete the spaceship. Napoleon's left as my biggest threat.

CIVIV-Charlie025.png

However, Napoleon's only completed some of the spaceship parts. He doesn't have so significant a majority that he can complete the rest with ease after I declare war upon him.

When Napoleon and Suryavarman II first declared war upon me, I didn't know for sure whether I could win the game. I needed all of my strength in order to mount an offfensive on the Khmer, and having France in the war would have - best case - forced me to play defensive. Instead, I'm now in a commanding position, and this game is mine to lose.

Turn 340 (1920 AD): I declared war on Napoleon.

Turn 347 (1927 AD):

CIVIV-Charlie026.png

Once I leveled Napoleon's stack of gunships and tanks, I only had to wait for him to want to talk with me. I could have taken more of his cities and crippled him, but I should be able to win the game before he can finish the spaceship.

Turn 355 (1935 AD):

CIVIV-Charlie027.png

Diplomacy doesn't feel like a copout, not with all of the Khmer blood I shed. I'm cashing out my chips to become Leader of the World!

CIVIV-Charlie028.png

Look at those hammers. I wish I could keep those between maps. Y'know, save 'em up for a rainy day when my only form of production is slavery. I think Vicky's the civ who's first in soldiers, and while I could have massed a transport fleet to kill her... eh, perhaps another time.

CIVIV-Charlie029.png

I'm sure all of my Great Generals are disappointed in my peaceful victory, though. I got 12 Great Generals this game and - with the except of the Medic III Explorer - invested them all in the capital (10 Instructors, 1 Military Academy). Aachen wasn't my best production site, but I wanted to have some fun with the game.

Final Thoughts
Spoiler :
Sury easily has the strongest starting position on this map, and my initial glances at the playthroughs of others confirms that he's the AI-to-beat. Still, I presume even he had a sluggish start, for so many early game wonders went so late. If the date the Oracle went in my game (375 BC) wasn't a fluke, then the possibilities for what tech the player could Oracle are enormous.

This map was a challenging experience for me. The starting position can be withering, and Charlemagne's traits do not readily compensate for economic misplays. While I had believed before I vassaled Zara that I could win this map with brute force, I didn't breathe easily until said brute force capitulated Sury. Oh, thank you, AI, for being tactically inferior.

Anyway, time to go dream about triple wet corn in my capital now. Thanks for the experience. I'm never playing this map again.

Monarch/epic, 1887AD conquest:

Spoiler :

Napoleon fell easily. I left him with 1 city so I could trade for all of his techs. He gave me compass in the peace deal, and I traded for optics, economics, astro, MilSci and corp, while getting him to stop trading with Willem and Bull. Communism finished, and SP was a huge boost to my economy. I was already set up for it with a ton of windmills/watermills/workshops, so my production really took off. I was finally able to build universities, and I moved my capital to the triple-gem site and built Oxford there.

After building a ton of galleons, I shipped my army overseas and declared on Vicky. Willem had beaten her down to 2 cities, one of which was coastal, so I landed there. A small force of cavalry/cannon tooke her city, and the rest set up on the border with Willem and attacked him on the following turn. Physics came in around this time, which meant I could dispense with seige and just damage his units with airships, then cavalry could clean up easily. Vicky capped to me after I took her first city, and I took all of Willem's cities, but I was still a couple of percent short on land. I took a couple of barb cities, and settled a few of my own on junk land, but was still short, so I declared on Bull just as I got to flight. I took 2 of his cities and he capped. Even though he had rifles, cavalry + CR3 cannon + fighters beat him easily. He capped and it was game over:

Noble epic 900ad.
Spoiler :

At this level no problems with the map. It helped that I captured triple gem city and triple sugar city from barbs. The AIs seem bogged down in the jungles. Big tech lead. Wonderspammed and added Parthenon, Glib, Glight, Colossus and MoM to the collection, didn't try for Mids.
Getting ready for war against Sury with elepults (which is badly organised as I've recently got to engineering and can build maces, landsknechts and trebs).

To be honest I think I've screwed up. Should have gone for construction much earlier and built axes/pults then HbR for elefantasies.

Seeking vengeance against this map (particularly against Sury) and hoping to redeem myself for all of my earlier misplays - particularly involving Great People - I surprised myself this morning and played it again... albeit on Noble/Normal as opposed to Immortal/Normal. While I don't have a comprehensive log like I did before, I do have two images:

My dream goal for the game was to snag Education with The Oracle, but I couldn't get enough oomph behind Charlie's commerce-poor start before I believed I had run out of time. Still, Philosophy's a great tech to pick with The Oracle; and I used Pacifism along with Representation, Bureaucracy, and Caste System to great success. As it turns out - surprise of surprises - even Charlemagne can research well on this map during sixty consecutive turns of Golden Age.

Offhand, I have no idea why my images alternate in size.

@yatta77: Thanks for the welcome. Yeah, it was a Diplomatic Victory. I can't say I played well, but I did secure a win thanks to the AI's suicidal tedencies during modern warfare. When the AI attacks your fortified Marines - in a city, no less - with Anti-Tanks and SAM Infantry, it's Doing It Wrong.

Fun game! This was my first Noble's challenge (or really my first game I played on these forums, period). I played on Prince, and won in 1845 with a religious diplomatic victory.

Spoiler :

I've never done a religious victory before, but I wanted to try it this time. It was surprisingly fun! My plan was to take out Ethiopia and maybe Khmer, spread Christianity everywhere, and get everyone to like me. Suryavarman declared on me shortly after I went to war with Ethiopia, though, and we kept trading an exposed city I'd conquered from Ethiopia in the middle of the jungle. Finally I made peace with Ethiopia, since all my troops were tied up defending against Sury's endless waves of soldiers. He was pumping out units non-stop the whole game. My power rating almost never passed his, despite a significant tech lead and quite a bit of military production of my own.

I took two of his cities and then sued for peace so I could finish conquering Ethiopia. When I did, I got him to convert to Christianity (I'd spread one missionary there before the war). After that, despite his continual military buildup, we were pleased/friendly the rest of the game (although I knew eventually he'd declare on me again if I didn't win quickly enough).

Napoleon LOVED me the whole game, and I converted him to Christianity early (which is why he didn't figure in my conquest plans). So after conquering Ethiopia, it was just a matter of getting Sury to friendly and spreading religion to the other three. Unfortunately, Sitting Bull was EXTREMELY stubborn---I could not get him to open his borders, ever (I had a hard time with the Dutch, too, but I managed to get them open long enough to slip one missionary in). After I'd gifted Victoria enough missionaries to convert her entire empire, she converted to Christianity without my asking, and we were Friendly from then on.

I would have finished much earlier, but I ended up having to eliminate Sitting Bull. I probably could have done that faster, but finally in 1845 AD I wiped his last city from the map, and the next turn a diplomatic victory vote finally came up, and I just barely won. Sury voted for himself despite being Friendly with me (which I guess is no surprise) but my votes + Napoleon's + Victoria's passed the threshold by 11.

Oh, I also accidentally settled my Economics great merchant when I meant to found Sid's Sushi. Oops!

@punctuator

Well played, I didn't even think of something like that while being able to keep up an offense.
