I have Civ III Complete (as part of Civ Chronicles) which doesn't have any manual that explains the game play at it's most basic level.

I have never played a game like Civ before, so with I start it up, I don't even know what I am trying to accomplish and what are the basic elements in the game.

The closest I've come is playing SimCity4. Most of the games I have played are arcade games and FPS, so it is not like I totally clueless when it comes to computer games, just games like Civ III.

If there are some good resources that briefly describe what the game is all about, just point me to the right place

Thx!

1. Found new city
2. Produce settlers to found more cities, workers to connect cities (by roads) and improve their production(adding mines and irrigating land) and soldiers to defend(spearman) them.
3. When you run out of land, get some offense troops and take Ai cities
4. Go back to step one.

You forgot 1 point:
2.1 Keep researching techs to improve cities and units

I have the Civilization Chronicles pack, and if I remember correctly, all of the game manuals are included on one of the disks as electronic .pdf versions.

I think there may be a tutorial mode, as well? There was when I picked it up - I just installed and started to play. 10 hours later, I went to bed... and got up 3 hours after that.

In a nutshell, you are the supreme commander of a fledgling civilisation and have the goal to shepherd it from the dawn of civilization into the modern era as the dominant nation on the planet. You can accomplish this by being preeminent in technology and production by launching space flights to the stars, by the force of arms by destroying or dominating your rivals, by producing massive amounts of high culture or by diplomatic means, getting voted by your rivals as head of the United Nations.
To accomplish this you need to balance technological advances, exploration, diplomacy, defensive and offensive milatary build up and developing a production and cultural infrastructure.
The beauty is there's lots of leeway as to how you want to win, what you set as priorities for development, and simply watching as swarms of troops struggle at your command is a blast!
