TLDR: Looking to make the game as close as possible to Civ 4’s “Aggressive AI” option.

Does anyone have a mod that makes the AI less hesitant to declare war and try to rush my cities?

For example, the one AI the whole game that decides to declare war on me usually parades their army in front of my borders for 15 turns, giving me the chance to build up a defense and get into position. Then, if they actually attack, it’s with a few easily destroyed units.

I also noticed that the AI will DoW other AI, but is slow to attack them. They also have problems massing their forces.

Here’s an example from my latest game. Montezuma denounced me, and I thought war was imminent. My frontier city was poorly guarded, and he definitely would have captured it. Instead, he spent 20 turns shuffling his units along our joint borders.

It’s kind of cheap, because I built up a force now in 20 or so turns that will steamroll him. I miss the days of Civ 4’s surprise wars when you least expect it. The AI plays too strategically for me now, and it’s not even good strategy.

I’ve tried getting the Aggressive AI mod from Steam. It only helps a little. I’ve tried playing on Diety, and using Domination as the sole victory setting. The AI seems to only DoW when I’m so weak that I have no chance of beating them.

Any ideas for Mods? This somewhat ruins the enjoyment of the game - I’d like war to be less predictable and less dealing with the AI winning the game.

Agression is determined by the specific personality of the leader (if you don't have random personalities enabled).
I don't think deity affects AI agression, but i'm not entirely sure. I do know that diety gives the AI bonuses however, which may cause them to declare war since you will be behind them

you should try the community balance project here - https://forums.civfanatics.com/forums/community-patch-project.497/
I dunno if the mod necessarily make them more agressive, but does make them smarter, in addition to adding a bunch of other balancing features

I can't fully recommend which one, but you'll probably need a mod that offers a customized DLL to help coax the AI out of semi-retirement.

I've experimented with the Smart AI - type mods (the ones that only use database/XML/SQL changes to AI settings), but to be honest, I didn't really notice much difference.

Some people swear by the Vox Populi mod, but it's really a completely different game from Civ5 - so you may like the improved AI but not necessarily all the other things it changes.

I've seen a LOT of good things said about WHoward69's DLL mod.

Have you just tried the Community Patch? You do not have to use the whole VP.

Yep. If war is what you like, Just install the community patch without VP, i can attest i uninstalled it because it was just too much, isabella had 200000 soldiers at one point lol
