Need Help *cry*

label doesnt matter just as long as it is an ms start up disk

I guess I don't get that part, doesn't give me that option. When I tried to restart it wouldn't let me, so I had to eject it.

under file system my only option is FAT, under allocation unit size my only choice is default allocation size, and under capacity I can choose either 3.5", 1.44mb, 512 bytes/sector and then 3.5", 720kb, 512 bytes/sector

I think I'm giving up here, is there any other alternative to wiping my computer?

OK DO YOU HAVE THE ORIGINAL CD FOR 2000

if you do put it in the cd rom

Then reboot and go into bios again this time set boot sequence to cd rom 1st save and let it start. 2000 might boot from cd.

Providing that the 2000 is equiped to boot up from cd.

luwkwul,

I've read all the messages in this thread very carefully. Are you certain that the problem with your CD players not being recognized started only after using msconfig? I'm asking this because, assuming that you canceled all the changes, your system should be working the same as before.

I think that it's much more likely that the CD problem began when you changed your motherboard drivers. Here is your post right after you did that:

Ok here is my new dxdiag dump... and my computer is running slower after I tried to install some new drivers for my motherboard. The game has the same problem btw, with the drivers I've installed.

The part about your computer running slower suggests that something changed for the worse. Also, the fact that plug 'n play couldn't get the drives back suggests that the problem lies below the operating system level (in other words, if your motherboard no longer recogizes the devices, then neither will Windows).

What do the others who are helping think about this analysis? It seems to me that the motherboard upgrade has to be rolled back. Perhaps from some original discs that came with the system?

It could be from when I installed the motherboard drivers. But CD's were still loading fine until I used msconfig. So, I'll give his last suggestion a shot here real fast.

Ok, it didn't work and my 2000 copy is a burned CD, not the original. But I've reformatted with it before.

I have original disc for the motherboard, Petek, but I can't get my computer to read CD's so I can't do anything with it.

2000 should boot your computer it has boot support from cd.

setting 1st boot disk to cd in bios would key it up even if you did not have a hard drive.

Cant say that boot would work on a burned copy.

Do you have an original copy of any os from ms?

Check this real kwik

verify that all drives in bios are in the boot sequence make the hard disk last

exit out and start.

watch for leds on all the drives they should all flash

OK, try the following to see if the CD drives are working at all:

(BTW, I tried all of the below on my system, which also has a DVD writer and a DVD rewriter. Everything worked OK. I also verified that the downloaded file and resulting boot disk were virus-free.)

Go to

http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

and download the file boot600.exe from the link DOS 6.0. Save this file to your hard drive.

Format a floppy disk.

Run the program boot600.exe and allow it to create a boot disk.

Boot your PC from this disk.

When your PC boots it should list one or both CD drives and tell you which letters it assigned to the drives.

Now try to read CDs from the drives (assuming that the above steps worked as described). Please post again to describe the results.

There was a driver r and a driver s, not sure what to do after that. I'm not familiar how to maneuver thru ms dos.

OK, this is promising. Put CDs in both drives. You should have on your screen what's called a "prompt" that looks something like "A:\". Type "dir R:" (without the quotes) and press the Enter key. You should see a list of files and folders on the first CD (some of the file names might look strange, but that's OK). Then do the same with "dir S:".

Assuming that both discs display information, that means that the drives are recognized by your hardware (and so the motherboard update is probably not to blame). Please post your result and we'll go from there.

Should have mentioned that you need to boot from the floppy once again before carrying out the rest of the steps. Sorry if this was confusing.

well you dont have to go thru em but once.

all you want to do is get a boot disk with cd rom support.

ME startup disk is pretty easy.

it asks you if you wanta load a cd support

then after it loads it will give you an A: prompt

Type in this

dir/w

that will show you the contents of the floppy

now change the drive to the cd:

The drive letter could change by one

d could be e and e could be f etc etc

no matter tho

use this command

cd\e:

your e drive will come up

type in

dir/w

that will list the contents of the drive

should be a file marked setup or install with an exe behind it

type in

setup

and that should do it.
