Will a 56k modem work with an IBM XT as long as it has an ISA slot or are there other requirements to consider?

Here are the specs:

XT system, ISA slots
80286 processor (16 MC is believe)
1MB RAM
10MB hard drive with DOS 4.0 (I may need to upgrade to 6.22)
5.25" diskette drive

Will a computer like this be able to use a fast modem? I'd like to get as fast a modem if I can because I am planning on setting up a BBS. I know they still sell 56k modems that work on AT systems but I'm not sure about XT. Otherwise I'll have to search eBay for an old 2400 or so but I figured I'd ask first.

Because restoring vintage PCs is a great hobby!

You might find it difficult to source a driver for the operating system, but as far as connecting it goes... if you can find a 56K ISA modem (I've seen 'em) then yes, should work fine.

I actually had an old 56k ISA modem laying in a closet. Had to dig it out... it's a Creative something or other. Want it?

I'm not sure about DOS 4.0, but I'm pretty sure that there are 56k modems out there that have drivers for DOS 6.22... in fact, I used to have one. Not sure where it is now, though.
