Need ideas for a new game to play...

Somewhat small archipelago map using Vikings to see the power of the Zerks?

Huge pangaea on cheiftain using Greece to try to be a score hog?

Other suggestions? Try to tell me the kind of map, difficulty (The highest I've done is Monarch and that was PAIN), what nation to use, etc... Not something normal though cause I want some... interesting runs... or something...
 
Why not put some restrictions on yourself to shake it up a bit? No Cavalry perhaps, Always War (or maybe just Always War against Europeans), No Optional Techs, Green Thumb (no pollution-generating buildings), something like that? Changing civs and settings can help, of course, but if adding some other variant to the mix can really throw a new monkey wrench in there and make it an interesting game.

Of course it's up to you to decide which suggestion you take. Or maybe think of another one based on ones people mention here. Something isn't going to be fun just because someone tells you it's going to be fun.
 
No Cavalry...?! Hows that possible T_T

I mean, a LONG part of the game IS fought with Cavalry... Without, I'd have to use like, Guerillas, or rush really hard to Tanks... But its so long to tanks =.=

There is a game somewhere during which the player never built ANY military units at all--how's that grab you as a variant?

Here is something that I still have not managed to do, even on Chieftain level, and that is building the Star Ship before the current date, on either a continent or archipelago map. Presently, I am trying to do it on one of my modified resource maps, with boosted resource yields and specifically planted resources. I think that I will do it, but have never managed to do it without really playing with the game.
 
You may find that it's easier to that on levels higher than Chieftain anyway; the AI will do some research for you then.

Check out this legendary game Dave McW's fast space race. This game showed the way for others (like SirPleb's fast diplo game) and is still number 3 in the HOF.
 
If you're just bored because you are playing solo games, you could either join a Succession Game or get involved in the Game of the Month games. Or try to wrangle a spot on the Hall of Fame games (several places are still open).

However...

If just need to spice up your solo games, well, try to conquer the world with just warriors (or Jaguar Warriors, if you are Aztec).

Don't build any Great Wonders. Small wonders are fine and you can capture Great Wonders, but you can't build any yourself.

Let the AI manage your workers. :cringe: (Pain. Agony. Pain.)

Play as India and conquer the world.

Conquer the world with only foot units (no horse units or tanks allowed).

Play an Always War game. Even at Chieftain this will unnerve you the first time your try it. The concept is simple: on the turn you meet an AI you must declare war on them. No peace, ever. It is you against the world.

Try for a space victory (sorta dull) but don't ever do any research (not so dull).
 
You can only build the UU of the civ you choose, besides workers and settlers of course. Just make sure you don't pick Portugal. :p

What VC do you prefer? 20k city can be quite a change without any other variations.
 
Or a 1bc game. You only build 1 city, then the rest must be captured. Play the conquests scenarios. Try some of the extra content on the civ disk. Great variety can be found.
 
I would strongly encourage you to read the threads in Stories and tales and it is a good start location to find something.

There is a legendary stories thread in addition to the games thread.

In addition, when you are reading one, you will likely get links to others; it really does tempt and inspire you.

That would make for 3, at least, since neither is the one I recall (& don't remember where it was!).

Other ideas? How about no infrastructure in your cities, ever? No rax, grannies, aquas, markets, etc. And if you capture a city & can't sell off the improvements, you must raze/abandon instead. No wonders at all, either.

Not enough? Ok, you can't improve any tiles at all, and if you get improved tiles under control, you have to pillage them immediately.

Most severe: you can't trade for resources, either. Not sure what that lets you build besides warriors, offhand--although you could always found cities atop resources. Then that city at least could build any unit that only required that resource to build.

Not sure how you approach such a variant--either an all-out early war, or wait for something like infantry, which only needs rubber (but you would have to found atop rubber & probably couldn't count on having more than 3 sources at best, unless you had already conquered a lot of the map). don't think I'd be up to it; maybe on chieftain, probably not otherwise. but skilled players could probably handle it as well as they handle all the other variants I read about here ;)

I'm not crazy about recommending no-military variants. They are simple to play - all you do is make ROP with everyone and you have a pretty good chance of riding the game out. But it teaches the player to be a builder which is not what most people need to be taught.

Better than that is an always war game.

Or the game where you can build no settlers.

I played an odd game once where I was allowed to build no workers.

There have been threads on the topic of game variants. Perhaps someone knows a link to one.
 
Currently playing as Neapolian, in the Conquests scenarios. Different and fun. I also enjoyed the colonization scenario, where you have to colonize the New World....I played as Spain.
 
Arathorn's article needs some tuning, some variants have been created since it was written. Others have been tweaked, combined, and just changed. Someone with a flair for words should do an update, like Aabraxan did with Tone's article on multiplier buildings.
