How do I address this error which is slowing my downloads to a crawl?
I don't understand why ports are showing this problem.

What's the error message, and what's the operating system?

When I download torrents it shows the "NAT error" when I change five digit ports. I assume this only affects broadband users after reading those forums. There is a wikipedia on NAT errors but I don't understand the Port Forwarding and Static IP address instructions.

I'm not sure about your OS, but if you are on XP and your router supports UPnP (not PnP, that's different), wouldn't that take care as long as...

1 - You had UPnP enabled on your router
2 - The "SSDP" and "Universal Plug and Play" services are set to automatic AND running in XP
3 - Your torrent software supports UPnP (BitComet does I know)

How do I check on the router?

I changed both services.
BitComet refuses to work, so I will check other software.

That depends entirely upon your router. You'll have to check the documentation. Personally, on my little Motorola WR850, it's a dropdown box on the basic settings screen with enable or disable options.

My ISP is sending a crew to check out their line to address the NAT error and frequent disconnects. I know how to check the router.
