the concept of corruption is replaced with city maintenance costs. This way, cities at the fringes of the empire won't be crippled and unable to produce buildings and units at more than a snail's pace. Former corruption-reducing buildings, such as courthouses, will instead lower the city maintenance cost

six religions included with the game
Have they dropped one or is this an error???

probably just a typo, this still had the line of sight rule for religion, so the info is a little old.

I would like to see screenshot of the city screen.

And it doesn't matter how much the futz with the govenor AI, I have never and will not use them.

Caesar stands at the forefront and demands tribute from you, for his words are backed with Nuclear Weapons. You offer him the gift of Radio, in hopes that he will leave you alone to pursue more scientific and cultural pursuits.

It sounds like now you can make counter offers.

@Mark-I suspect error. Im more likely to believe 20 sources who say 7 then 1 who says 6.

New model for conecting cities and resources is going to be more realistic that in Civ3. Great!

I assume that for trade to occur along a river/lake system, the other civ must have already been discovered and the path of the system must be mapped?

is the video worth downloading?

Yes. There's some game-play footage, and it's about 4+ mins. :)

Heya! As the dude who wrote the article (and super civfanatic), i just want to let you guys know that the info here is up to date as of last thursday. I typo'd the religions, but fixed it now. The game looks freakin' awesome, let me tell you. Our 'twenty minute demo' went for over an hour =)

As for the video...well, we had to cut it down to like 5 minutes. My poor partners, who weren't as die hard as me, were starting to glaze as the demo went on. I asked Jesse a bunch of super hardcore questions, but in my preview, my editors asked that i try to make it more general. Mainly, my interests were in the new religion stuff and the general feel of the interface.

I don't know about you guys, but i'm dying to play the game for real now =)

Shivam, welcome, glad to see you around! :)

Is there any chance to read all the info you have gathered at this one hour demo?
I think we here at CFC would be most grateful...

Most of what i saw was in my preview. I was supposed to write 300 words, and ended up writing 2000 =)

One thing i can tell you is that i had Firaxis change the Hindu symbol from an abstract elephant to an Om. it makes me feel really geeky to say that i got to contribute to civ 4 =)

The city screen was really different. I asked for screens, but they said that i couldnt have any yet. It's a little disconcerting to old timers.

From what I heard, they actually considered not having one at one point, but people wanted it back. I think I remembered seeing some earlier video having a glipse of it, but it hadn't been finished yet. Its possible they want to polish it a bit more before they can show it to the general public.

After watching this I'm almost convinced religion is a useless addition.

So what do you get from religion? Having a holy city, and sending out missionaries, and AI have better attitude with the same religion? How is that useful?

I thought different religions would have different capabilities, but as said in the video (and I fully understand that), Farixis is not making any religions look different from the other due to political reasons.

Civics is the really exciting one, on the other hand.

there may be the possibility for religion setting up sort of "natural alliances" (or natural enemies). In Civ III there was no reason for one civ to have any greater affinity for another, but maybe by converting a neighbour you'll get some friendlier AI interaction, and a ready partner when you need a military alliance, etc.

This is all just speculation, but since it sounds like the civics system (and the choices you make) will affect the attitudes of other civs towards you, this potential for informal "alliances" seems fairly plausible.

Plus, it gives you a chance to do something like the old Civ II spy missions, something not in Civ III. You can undermine and influence a neighbour "peacefully".

Is it just me, or do one of the screenshots which shows a city building a Jewish cathedral sound like an oxymoron?

Welcome, and indeed nice to have you at CFC. It’s actually the first time I’ve seen a previewer/reviewer on this site.

Well, I think the way they worked with religion was really smart if you ask me. It is true that they are all the same, but in a way they are not. AIs have their preferences which means that in one game you will not see everyone with only one religion (if that happens, THEN you can say that it is useless).
But since they all have different religions it will obviously affect things from happiness to diplomacy…

Mainly, religion is another facet of diplomacy in this game. There is a lot of strategy in seeding discord in other nations by sending your missionaries out there. Also, the cathedrals and monastaries strengthen religious stuff in cities.

And yeah, as all religions can have cathedrals, i fully expect to see Confucian Cathedrals causing bizarre looks =)

but yeah, some leaders are predisposed towards some religions, and can get mad if you don't change to theirs. I don't really know how else they could have done it without really making it problematic. In the civics screen, under religion, there are options like being a free religion nation, where you don't get any bonuses from religion, but get happies in your cities and stuff, and much better reaction from other nations. I wanted to probe more into that, but we had moved on.
