New Civ: Australia

To be honest I cant see Labor investing the the Departmant of Defence as highly as what the Howard Government has. However I hope it doesnt impact on our purchasing of the new JSF fighter and the rest of our M1A1 Abrams tanks. As our current fighters and Tanks seriously need to be upgraded to be kept up to date with other powers in the region.

You're quite right there. I don't think that the tanks are in any danger. They were bought at a bargain price (at least something went our way in the alliance). The JSF might be a different story. Labor's shadow defence spokesperson said "Lets get the F-22 Raptor", ignoring statements by the US Under-Secretary for Defence that they would not be offerred for export. The alternative is more F-18 Super Hornets and/or a mix of JSF/F-18s. Perhaps you could create Australian-specific units for the Mod (hint hint, beg, beg, grovel, grovel) and put all of them in. After CivGold of course ;)

heheheheh Take a look at my Romania mod it has several flavor units for the civ. If demand is the same I will do the same for Australia.

also it doesnt help that the F-22 cost nearly double what the JSF does too.

yuk. This is so steriotypical australians are NOT a bunch of crocodile wrestling, Sporty people who live in the "outback.

Put in a rebublican flag instead of that stupid union jack.
Put in John howard for Fin/Org fav civic: bureacracy
Put in Bob hawk for Ind/exp fav civic: emancipation
Put in Bob brown for exp/org fav civic: enviromentalism

What have you got for the cities?

This might be a bit biased but I think a new UB could Union Office (replaces forge 1 happiness double production speed of worker) maybe a bit overpowerd?

First off I AM AUSTRALIAN and as such I am well aware that we are not a bunch of, how did you put it? "Crocodile wrestling, sporty people who live in the outback" We are however a nation that has a very proud sporting history. Even if it is in the last 100 years or so, considering Australia as a nation is not much older than that, it is pretty good.

Second. The Union Jack? where the hell in this entire mod did you see the Union Jack? Believe it or not I am well aware the Union Jack is a direct symbol of England. The flag in this mod is the Southern Cross, and if you perhaps read some Australian history you would know that the Southern Cross flag, much like this one in this mod, was used by Peter Lalor and his fellow miners at the Eureka Stockade in Ballerat.

I will take you leaders under advisement however as I have said before I am not sure when I will get time to revisit this mod as I am very busy with other projects (foremost of them getting EBCIV off the ground) but when I do return to this civ I will look into adding new leaders. John Howard always was on my list of Leaders, however it comes down to finding a leaderhead that can match his likeness, a tough ask as most look nothing like him.

And finally if you do not like how I as an Australian have represented the Australians, as a nation, in this mod don't download it. Don't play it. Make your own version for you to play. But don't bash my work, especially when you clearly have not taken the time to look closely at it.

My 2cents

Cheers
Aranor

I think he was just spamming (not reading the first post at all) but I agree that John Howard would be a cool addition. Also I think Sid could be made to look like him.

God I hope you are wrong, I hate spammers more than I hate critics who have nothing positive to suggest as an alternative. And yes Sid could be a really cool leaderhead for John Howard. I had never even thought of that as you never see Sid ingame, unless you are playing the Tutorial, But add some glasses and reskin the clothes to make a suit and Bobs your uncle theres good ol' Johnny boy :goodjob: Nice Suggestion Chugginator :goodjob:

This mod is fantastic.

The only problem is that as soon as I get to build the sports stadium the game shuts down.

Anyone know whats causing this?

Kells

I am aware of what is causing this. Although I have not heard of it in this civ. I will post a fix for it when I get home later (Im at work now and dont really have access to the files right now).

Do you work night shifts? :coffee:

Back to the rats, I think that the name should be changed to "Digger". Australia has really only ever fought wars with calvalry(up to WWI) and light infantry (up to present). It makes sense as the Rats were infantry.

Also it'd be a nice touch to have the unit wear a slouch hat!

But very cool none the less.

I see where you are coming from. However the Rats of Tobruk are meant to symbolize a single aspect of the Australian "Diggers" of WWII as the term "Digger" is a generalization for all infantry even to this day. At least that is how I see it.

Hey mate, could I just say thanks for making this. I haven't played it yet, but I know it'll be sweet. Usually I'd play the US, and name everything Australian etc. as it would be the closest I could simulate to it, anyways. Your work is much appreciated.

I definately agree, with the Southern Cross as flag. Curtin, and the other attributes you've outlined, shows a lot of thinking.

Hmm, my only concern with it would be the Rats of Tobruk. It's kind of very specialist, too specialist I think... you mention that we don't really have a Marines. What about the SAS? The Special Air Service Regiment would be pretty good. I guess they'd be perfect in the new warlords expansion coming out, as paratroppers, eh? Or instead of the SAS, theres the not too well known, SBS (Special Boat Service Regiment) more amphibious related... but I guess these would be too specialist aswell.. just wouldn't feel right having the SAS in every city. Anyways, I did read what you meant about the Rats symbolising the digger in ww2.

What about Kokoda though? in future there could be some kind of unit, with auto jungle bonuses? hah just tossing up ideas. I spouse it'd be a lot of work to implement all this stuff, good luck keeping it balanced... cus I know if I was editting, Australia would 'own' everyone. hah

Also, is there a Light Horse Brigade unit at all? if not there definately should be. maybe another reference for the new extended era.. they could be a precurser to australia's cavalry, or replace it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_horse bit of background info nicely packaged.

Menzies should be in for sure, as a leader. I guess its hard to miss Howard, if anything do him last though. Or just keep it to menzies and curtin :D

May come back and readdress my remarks, after I've played.. hah I just feel like I'm going to be enthralled, so expect me back in few days hah. Ever want any ideas, I've got alot... keep up the good work.!

I'm glad your so excited! :goodjob: Well all your ideas are great and I take everything posted here seriously (too seriously if you read the Romania thread ;) ) All your ideas are great and could well be included in future expansions of this mod. It has been suggested to add several flavor units to the game. However I don't want to get anyones hopes up too high. With the EBCIV project officially off the ground and work beginning on it I'm not sure when I will have time to come back to this, although I probably will try to at some stage, most probably when BtS comes out and I update all my civs to that format. Anyway Hope every one enjoys. :goodjob:

Great sounding Civ! Mostly matches my ideas for it.
Especially the sporting grounds! MCG really should be a great wonder.

Don't want to get political - but why the Johny Howard leader calls? Nothing noteworthy there.
Monash as a military leader.
Norm Smith as a tactical, organised leader.

I do agree that John Howard is an, on the surface, poor choice for a leader. However what people forget is that he is the second longest serving Prime Minister of Australia after Robert Menzies. If nothing else that is noteworthy. He has also, no matter how unpopular, led one of the largest economic booms Australia has ever seen in recent history. Don't get me wrong, I hope he looses the next election, just like I hoped he'd loose that last one, but that does not mean he hasn't been an influential part of Australian modern history.

I think you will find there are other noteworthy unpopular leaders in all categories, look at Stalin for crying out loud.

As a newcomer to this site I can't wait to download an Aussie mod to play! I'm very excited about this and well done to all involved and thank you!
