New Civ4 Version launched!!!

I wonder how they implement civics? Surely Police State, Free Speech, Free Religion and the other more 'liberal' civics would be matters of contention?

so whats the difference beetween that civ and our civ?

Primary difference: Nobody used a marker to draw a moustache on a LH in "our" civ. I think my six-year-old could have done a better job re-skinning those LHs. If Firaxis did this, then they must have given the job to some high-school interns. That being the case, I hope those same interns aren't now working on Beyond the Sword.

I actually like the Qin Shi Huangdi in that version better. He looks more historically accurate.

But who the heck is Mr. Tang? And why would they remove Mao Zedong? Do they hate him in China? I thought they only hated him in Taiwan...

Well, current Chinese goverment simply does not want you to be able to raze all Chinese cities of AI Mao to the ground and eliminate him from the game.

Perhaps the "Emperor Taizong of Tang", often regarded as the greatest Chinese ruler, the man who presided over China at the height of its golden age of civilization.

If they really cared about 'freedom', my government would AT LEAST put the smack down on companies cooperating with repressive regimes.

How would not forcing a company to not censor their game be supporting free speech?

Freedom of the market comes along with freedom of the press. Not allowing them to censor their own game is imposing their own beliefs.

A couple of the Warlords leaders look "plastic" (they have a lot of shine on their skin). It wouldn't surprise me if we see some poor quality additions to BTS.

Its because the Chinese government likes to censor everything that doesn't adhere to their narrow views. They would not tolerate Japan and Mongolia as being historically important in the game for example.

They banned the movie Memoirs of a Geisha in China, because it is set during war time (even though the war barely gets a reference). I suspect it is because it portrays the Japanese as normal people, instead of as the inhuman monsters they like to portray them as.

I can't believe Firaxis would do this. They have no honour.

Yup, Firaxis wants to sell more copies than getting into the politics. (I think there were games banned because the leaders don't appreciate the historical link to the imperialism etc.)
But with piracy rampant there i don't think it is going to help that much.

Maybe the Chinese couldn't bear to see "the Mao has been eliminated!!"

Actually I just figured it out. He died a hero, but know there's great controversy over him in China. Some people like him, some people don't.

I´m not sure but i think they banned Command and Conquer Generals in China only because they don´t wan´t them to represent China using nuclear weapons against terrorrist. So It doesn´t surprise me that they force firaxis to censorship Civ to be able to sell it there.

Mr.qin or Duke qin

What is that hovering above his head?

It looks to me like he's a graduate. I wonder what the extra tassles are for? Jewelled tassles, no less. He must have done very well in his finals.

firaxis shouldn't have done this. not being able to purchase civ4 legally in china would have made for a little bit more opposition against china's oppressing leadership.
