Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that I'm putting up a new Let's Play series on youtube, currently featuring the Mayans on Deity. If any of you are interested, click here to hop on down to my channel and play along. :) If enough people like it, I'll probably do some more civs/scenarios in the future. Just let me know in the comments what you think, so I can tailor my videos for my viewers. Thanks!

Great series so far. You are doing a good job of explaining your strategy as you go. It's a good map for this strategy as well. Looking forward to seeing how this progresses.

I'm thinking that you may want to just keep planting cities until you run out of space. If you don't do that, the AI will, so you will eventually butt up against them anyway. The lack of the happiness religious beliefs will make this a bit more difficult however. What are your thoughts on this?

I just wanted to pop in and give some positive feedback.

I am at episode 2 and it looks great so far, I was a bit puzzled about the location of your city number 2.
Why did you place it at a location where you could not reach the two extra luxuries+stone when it would only take moving it one tile more to settle with those in reach?

@RedRover: Yeah, maybe you're right. As you will soon see once I get ep 4 uploaded, I do end up paying a little bit for not doing that. I just tend to be a little bit on the cautious side as a player when it comes to expansion, and tend to favor steady growth instead of putting myself into risky situations diplomatically.

@BBMorti: If you keep watching the series, the reason why I do that becomes clear. I want those two luxes (citrus and truffles) within my 1-ring so I can immediately get the happiness boost from them as I expand, and also I planned on planting additional cities that would make use of those other resources you mention very shortly.

Thanks for the feedback, guys! Ep 4 should be up tonight.

On second thought, I think I was talking about the wrong city. If you mean the first expansion (the one to the west), I put it there because it's on the hill, and closer to my capital so it's a shorter road to build and a little easier to defend in case of an early DoW. Defensive value of your cities is a really major concern in the early game on high difficulty since you can be quickly crushed by Atilla/Montezuma/Alexander. And I intended to have other cities later to take advantage of those other resources -- when mass expanding, it's best to put the cities closer together if you can so you can have a higher total number of cities (the lower total number of workable tiles per city isn't a big problem since the pop levels will be lower).

Lastly, having luxes in your 1-ring is vastly, vastly better than those in your 2- and 3-rings in this stage of the game since you want that happiness boost immediately.

I cannot see how you play on Deity level and still think Jungles give production
:P
However, I like your gameplay and the way you explain it
Just two observations (until now)
I'm on episode 2 and you are building walls, not in the city next to Russia but in the other one, a
further away, AND, you are building a worker in the city the almost shares borders with Ghandi
Soo..... -.-
I'm gonna see how that turns out to be :P you will end up selling luxes or something to rush buy walls

Heh, they don't. I guess I just never paid close attention to it and assumed that they did. Well, if they don't, then probably leaving jungle alone most of the time and getting the science bonus later on is a good idea. Although, sometimes you'll want the extra blank space.

But yeah, I guess I make up enough in some other ways in order to get away with that particular flaw :P Guess things like that are why I should read documentation/forums more often.

In the end, I'm not super sad about chopping some of the ones that I did so far, especially with the plains giving the production increase is nice, and lowering defense of possible invaders... however, I'd have put it a lot lower in the priority order of course. XD Thanks for letting me know... I guess I'm less of a noob Deity player now :P

Another thing I'll admit - I'm an old Civ player from the Civ 2 days (weren't those the best days?) that picked up Civ 5 when it was released, and hated it. It was so buggy, saves didn't really work, and the tech tree was pretty flawed balance-wise. So, I barely played it and went on to other games. Then, a few weeks ago, I somewhat reluctantly checked out G&K after having heard really, really good things about it from a friend. And totally, absolutely loved it and how many things it fixed from the top down. So, while I'm maybe a little unfamiliar with the nuances of this version, I'm a long-time strategy gamer, so in the typical old man fashion, I tend to lean on my experience rather than keep up with all the little details of the youngest whipper snapper of the Civ line XD.

I was surprised that you chose Piety instead of waiting for Rationalism, particularly with all of the jungle. I guess you can hope that someone else builds the UN. But getting too far behind in tech is pretty dangerous considering both of your neighbors are in Industrial already. Maybe you can keep the relations good with them, but I always worry about Ghandi since he loves nukes.

Hi. I stumbled across this LP, and I think it's really good! Bumping this thread will hopefully give you more viewers and likes. Hope for more :-D

Did the Mayan series get shelved due to the Fall patch? Not very many Deity LP's around any more after that patch. Either the Deity players moved on to different games or they stopped winning on Deity since the patch.

Not very many is understatement. I'd say none. The only ones I've found played on non default favorable settings.

As you could see from TG 51 some players can still beat Deity on a random map without reloads.

I did watch some of your vid, cymerdown, and it seems mysterious to me how you survive, while being jammed between Russia and India, with 100 bpt @ turn 150 and a nonexistent army.. Your diplomatic skills must be very high. I usually unlock g.w. bombers at t.170-180, and even with that, my chances of winning are 50/50.

Guess a diplo win is always possible, even in your situation.

Just wondering - does unit spam get unbearably high even after AIs win and you get Stealth/Nukes?

Honestly speaking, I think both you and Moriarte could make extremely enjoyable LPs for Deity or Immortal, even with super fast finish times (especially you, Pilgrim!). Adding the bell peppers and other flavorful condiments is pretty easy too; you could practically ramble on something random or semi-tangent or historical while ya'll be putting through a tough fight or making things go clockwork!

Why don't ya'll do it? It could go (bi)weekly in terms of updates if time is issue, plus this fora needs fresh blood...

Not saying that nobody can do it anymore, but seems like RNG plays a huge part. On the same map many good players were defeated badly just because game developed differently. I don't think this one game is an indication.

Thanks for your faith in me, smallfish, but I'm not a worthy candidate. :) First of all, my upload speed is ridiculously low and there is no chance in the world I'll be able to upload videos, and traditional LP with screenshots and commentary is too time consuming. Not something I can commit to right now. Besides, I'm not comfortable with deity at all. And although showcasing the game is what forces me not to play sloppy as I usually do and thus essentially makes me play better, I'm afraid at this point it will take too many attempts for my liking. And immortal is not very challenging. The point of watching and/or making LP (for me at least) is to learn something new in the process. I'm not saying there is nothing left to learn on this level, but whatever it is it's volume does not justify the amount of effort such commitment requires. That being said, Moriarte has my full moral support! :king:

I am thinking, though, about bi-weakly deity challenge where everybody can try the same map. It's even possible to create a map for both immortal and deity (I hope?) What do you guys think?

Regular Deity challenges? Sounds great. Fire up a thread in (GOTM?) section, post a save and let's play it out! We can repeat it once a month at first, with a first registered winner of this map posting a map for next month, or something like that ;).
