Well, Plato does and, while he may have been telling a whopper, his writings are part of history. And they say that Atlantis sank 9000 years prior to their writing.

The most recent theory is that Plato used the Crete civilization, enemy of Athen, as the model for his Atlantis, a "theoretic" civilization he used to illustrate his philosophical writing.
It is also believe he used months instead of years, probably to stress the length of the period, but some traduction errors introduce the year. So it won't be 9000 years, but 9000 months (750 years). Incidently, its the same think in the Bible with the 900 years of Mathusalem (who was in fact 75 years old, and that time it WAS very old).
By the way, the volcanic eruption of the Santorin produced a very powerful Tsunami which is believed to be the cause of the disparition of the Crete civilization, about 800 years before Platon.
Quite interesting coincidence isn't it?
