New Let's Plays

Yes, most of the Let's Plays I saw yesterday, I could not even bear to finish, so embarrassingly clueless were they. Now admittedly, we Civ geeks hanging out in these forums are relatively a small part of the gaming population, but you would think that, given the opportunity to show off such a product, a blogger with little TBS or Civ experience would try to learn something about it before going out and posting a video for all to see just how little one does know. But noooo...:crazyeye::nope:

Man there's so many of them :O Anyone found a video that stands out from the others in terms of quality of play and commentary?

I tried watching GameFront, but just couldn't stand it. He's completely clueless, and also slow. I mean if you're going to spend 2 minutes on every action, you could at least read what things do. Or even notice what unit you have selected.

I can tolerate the awful strategic choices he made - that just makes the game more entertaining. But basic stuff like being able to move your units correctly, or the ability to compare 4 vs 5? Too painful, even for me.

I've had this problem with every video so far... I just can't stand to wait 2 minutes each time an obvious choice has to be made and listen to meaningless pondering during that time. Too bad there isn't a let's play from a person that actually has some hours in CiV.

That's why I'm going back to watch MadDjinn's a couple more times, then maybe rehash the official Firaxis ones with Pete, who pretty much knows what he's doing...most of the time. :D

It started at golden levels of stupidity (Oh, instead of getting a decent coastal location I'm going to land right on this tasty bonus resource and destroy it) and didn't improve from there (yes, burning your early gold on tiles your city will pick up relatively soon anyways, and then forcing your worker away from the 2f 1g tile your city grew to on its own to work...the 2f 1g tile you bought).

I get that maybe he didn't realize that cities now gib bonus resources, but there was no bonus to settling on that hill that he couldn't get from setting somewhere else.

I flinched watching that and quit the video then and there, figuring it would probably not get any better.

He later builds a second worker when the first is already ahead of his population. And then builds roads everywhere, after talking about how roads cost energy.

There were a couple streams concurrent with MD's yesterday - IGN and RPS, I think? - I had to leave basically right after MD's, but I watched a bit of the IGN, and the guy was fairly competent. I can't find the vod for it though. :(

When I got home last night I noticed there were like 25k people viewing BE so I checked it out and this guy (angry joe) made every other LPer/streamer look amazing - I cannot describe him as anything but a fool. Truly painful.

Such things make me appreciate what I have in life, like Solar Gamer's LP, it's really not so bad.

Hello I am new to this forum, well at least in the "registered" mode, because in reality I've been reading it for years. CivFanatics is just the best site for Civ fans hands down!

Regarding the LP's:

He later builds a second worker when the first is already ahead of his population. And then builds roads everywhere, after talking about how roads cost energy.

I feel you pain! This guy is not only clueless but also careless, he leaves the paddock unfinished, thinking it was already finished, and never look back. And also his bad jokes - just to much to for me to bear, had to mute him for good!

Hope there are some better LP's coming down soon.

I watched most of Rhykker's 3-hour-long LP, but I couldn't finish. It was quite painful and frustrating to be subjected to his cluelessness and lack of risk-taking. The latter in particular doesn't make for a very entertaining video: it was a very conservative yet aimless 200 turns. One might say we CivFanatics know too much, but most of his failures were general ones in strategic thinking.

Why do you research a tech, knowing it'll help you, but then don't make use of it (i.e. the one with ultrasonic fences)? You have a problem with health, and you know you need health buildings, why don't you construct them? The aliens are tough and outnumber you, why do you keep trying to advance with the same two marines instead of building more units?

Basic, non-specific things any decent strategy gamer should be able to handle, but it was baffling and unnerving.

Just found a new one. Don't know how good he is yet cause I haven't watched but a minute of it:

Link to video.

What an annoying voice!! Argh!

Yeah, but at least he seems to know what he is talking about so far. He has played Fall From Heaven, Civ V, etc... and so far I haven't seen anything stupid yet (about ten minutes in).

True, I did notice that he is pretty knowledgeable, much more so than 90% of the other Let's Plays that we've seen. It's just that intro in the first 10 seconds that is bad.

Amazing, when has energy to spare and a siege worm outside his base he actually purchases an ultrasonic fence to keep the worm away. Why does something like that elude other people in other videos? And he is actually planning ahead with health and founding a new colony? I am speechless.

Alright just finished watching it, all-in-all not too bad. He has a throw-away attitude towards his units, especially where alien nests are concerned and he likes automating stuff but overall not too many obvious mistakes.
