Friend of mine created a huge MP map using the editor. We tried to play in it but when he hosted the game the map was not in the list. He can pull up the map in the single player game. What are we doing wrong?

You're probably not doing anything wrong. Currently you can't use mods in MP, it's possible this also extends to custom maps. Just another problem that needs to be fixed.
