I don't know if you've heard about the new Nike campaign promoting footie in the United States.
Here's a link : US Soccer Nike campaign

On this website, Nike obviously promotes soccer in a pretty incisive way in the United States. You can find for instance that video called "so says this American game".

The funny thing is also the banner used by Nike to invite people to visit their website. I couldn't copy it and paste in here, but you can see both the horizontal and vertical version of it in this website.

It'd be nice of them to explain why they've got the snake wrapped around a volleyball.

Old football (soccer) balls looked like that. It is only recently relatively to the long history of the game (since the 1970s) that the balls started looking more like they do today. So there are many clubs and national football associations that have "volleyball" balls in their logos and shirt badges.

Soccer is a niche sport in the US and therefore needs some kind of hook.

Hell, any country that supports a professional dodgeball league needs marketing help...

Seems fairly accurate. Although it's hard to take them seriously when you look at the US form of football, with all their padding and the like.

Wow! people actually think Europe is Better then USA

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Reyna is best captain in EPL
2. There is no counter to Donovan and Beasley teamwork
3. Gregg Berhalter is captain at Energie Cottbus
4. No one in the world can do a better job at leftback for USA then Lewis
5. Ed Johnson, Brian McBride, Taylor Twellman are the first USA players that can actually score AND work as a team
6. Oneywu is a badass and last years MVP in the Belgian league
7. Cherundolo is vice captain at Hannover 96
8. Quarter finals 2002 we dominated the game. Difference - Johnson can score on Kahn, Donovan + 4 years of experience can score on Kahn
9. Most of these players went the same high school (Twellman, Johnson, Donovan, Beasley, Onyewu) some of them were in the same class.
10. Kasey Keller
11. Less pressure, we scare the ******** out of everyone else
12. Indivivually... European Countries win on paper. However, this is only a marginal superiority.
13. But for some reason, they cant play as a team, at least not like our boys. Not even close. TEAMWORK IS A DECISIVE SUPERIORITY IN AMERICAN SOCCER

Scary thread at the last link Marla posted. Provided for comical value. Love the reasoning that USA are great because they have a captain at Cottbus. The final point is vaguely accurate though as thats the biggest problem England has.

Well, I believe the idea from Nike to support the development of footie in the United States is a great initiative. Indeed, the more numerous are people playing the game, the best will be the players I'll appreciate on TV :D (As you may imagine, I don't play footie every weekend).

But when I've seen this, I wondered why they've chosen a black, red, white combo for the colours. Maybe it's because my mind is screwed up but I automatically associate that colour combo with some nasty Historical references.

Anyway, I don't know if you've seen the movie clip but it's rather funny : we are the best in sports, "soccer" is now "the american game" and we have the best gene pool on earth... as such, we are the next Brazil. As much as I appreciate the initiative about promoting footie in the US, I'm still a bit disturbed by the mean used to make American people interested in that sport.

I really dont get how saying "soccer is for sissies and foreigners" is promoting the sport. Seems to me like tis just bashing foreigners.
Anyway, that list dell found is just comical beyond belief.

The point from Nike is obviously to fight against that silly cliché about footie being a girly sport which is still widespread in the United States.

At the beginning I wanted to post the banner where you see the snake eating that sentence "soccer is for sissies and foreigner". Unfortunately, it's a flash animation which cannot be pasted as such.

I'll change the title in order to reflect the thread more accurately.

Ah I can't edit the thread title anymore. :(

Note to moderators : Could anyone change the thread title into "New Nike campaign in the US promoting Footie". Thanks :)

Thats the attitude that makes a lot of football fans hope that the USA will never win the WC as we would never ear the end of it.

That's the last thing I need... USA Champ of the World. I rather see Brazil win it again.

From my point of view, we can let them say what ever they wanted and continue playing their "manly sports" after all they are the one that miss it and we have already enought people playing to make several million teams...

There are some accurate points in there. Reyna is not the best captain in the EPL in terms of playing skill, but he definitely provides a good leadership role for the team. He was at one point early on ranked as the best EPL player by some statistic thing they use there. Donovan-Beasley is a very solid combo, and if there is anyone who saw their corner kick play that led to the second US goal in the 2-0 win over Mexico last month will agree. The quarter-finals 2002 were a close game, and if the proper refereeing decisions had been made, I venture to say that it would have at least gone to penalties. Kasey Keller is definitely a class keeper. He is having a great season in the Bundesliga. For the last point, I actually do agree, though it is also true with alot of the smaller teams who do well. The United States is reaching the point where it has a good combination of talent and teamwork.

The rest of those points, especially the ones about the captains are a little iffy to totally laughable.

I like the ad, but in general I think Nike is too in-your-face and arrogant, and judging from that post and some others I read, that's the kind of people it attracts to forums. People who don't care much about soccer but want to see the USA win alot and seek to brag about it online.

I think the red, white, and black seem like intimidating, "tough" colors that Nike would choose to promote this ad.

As for the ad, I think it is a little extreme, but nonetheless I think many people fail to realize that American soccer will grow and keep growing for a very long time, and we will win a World Cup at some point in the next 20-30 years IMO.

Dell, your point is true, but you must also keep in mind that this is just an ad put on by a corporation I (and others) see as one that constantly promotes an "in-your-face", "we are better than the rest" attitude, and does not necessarily represent the attitudes of many American soccer fans. Like I said before, Internet forums are probably not the best way to judge American fans. If and when we do win the World Cup, I'm going to have to rub it in. True American soccer fans have endured so much America-bashing and people constantly laughging off their team, that it would be hard for us to be quiet after a WC win. Personally, I think you all who laugh at American soccer would deserve to be poked fun at after an American win.

So hows finishing second to us in CONCACAF feel? Any better than getting knocked out by us in the second round of the 2002 WC?

Nike used to make great footie ads, but I don't like their recent ones. In here in France (and I guess it's the same in Europe), you see currently a Nike commercial with athlets showing their well-built muscle bodies. That kind of cult of the body in sport is, actually, absolutely fascist. That's the exact same spirit as the nazis during the Berlin Olympics : "look our beautiful Aryan body, we are the superior race because we are so strong."

There's nothing in that commercial. I regret the time of Cantona's Au revoir adverstisement. :(

Naervod, that kind of certainty you have in your words is really really annoying. I remember that the day France was in final of the World Cup in 1998, I was still convinced that the World Cup was reserved to a club of few chosen teams in which France didn't belong to. If there's something important about the World Cup, it is to remain humble towards it.

If the United States win the World Cup in Germany (which is still possible of course), I regret to say that it will be most likely thank to a Greek kind of play. I've seen the US team playing several time, and I'm sorry if that breaks anything about you but I've never been impressed by the players. The team play a very defensive football made about long balls and counters. The most important seems obviously to avoid the team in front to play. It's a lot more physical than technical. And I'm sorry but I don't want such a team to win the World Cup.

The best were the 02 WC ads with the Elvis music and them playing in the hull of the ship.
