New pitboss

A last point of interest. I am taking down my natneg server, to simplify and reduce the amount of stuff I have on the server.

Please go to this post (and the first post in that thread) http://realmsbeyond.net/forums/showthread.php?tid=7123&pid=500894#pid500894 for information on how to update your information to the new natneg server you should be using. Everyone needs to update to the new natneg server IP in their hosts file, as everyone needs to be using the same natneg server for natneg to work. If someone uses mine, and someone uses zanth's, you will bounce. I am taking my natneg server down sometime during this weekend.

So we just replace your ip with his in the line for making sure of no bounce when someone tries to get in when you are connected to the host?

That is correct :) Thankfully it is a simple thing. His server will see a drastic increase in traffic though, as I have had a LOT of connections to that service every day - also from people who are not playing in the Pitbosses I host. I hope external players pay attention to the main thread over at RB, since we announced it there.

Thank YOU for what you do so we can play the favorite game, Cal :)

I love doing it. :) I don't love the tech issues though, as they are annoying to both me and all the players. I would be safe if people started looking for other host alternatives, so I really hope we can see the end of this string of problems now, and that tech issues again become an irregular thing. :)

Indeed, praise be upon Caledorn for his tireless effort to keep us entertained. :goodjob:

Wwith only HRE and Imp Knoedel to play and with 11 hours left, I have unappeased the game.

Urgh, I'm not sure if I'm gonna reboot my PC during that time, especially considering that I planned on sleeping for most of it. Eh, I'm pretty sure everything is queued anyway, so I'm gonna take my chances of missing maybe one worker turn.

Are you sure the game was appeased in the first place? :P

That was an autocorrect. It was meant to be unpaused, but that isn't a word according to my computer.

Hey, I couldn't let such a great opportunity to mock the autocorrection pass!

So how does one get a hosts file? In the Windows\system32\drivers\etc folder I have: lmhosts.sam, networks, protocol, services and two .bin files but no hosts.

hosts is normally empty (well, it has some comments in it that don't matter).

so you can just create a new one, pasting in those 4 lines
Just make sure when it saves, it doesn't get a .txt extension added.

Note: some malware prevention programs may interfere with editing it, so if you run spybotSD or something, you may need to temporarily disable that.

Here is mine. every line that starts with # is ignored, so doesn't need to be there at all.

Code:
# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
#	127.0.0.1 localhost
#	::1             localhost

Sorry for not logging off outright for whoever I blocked, I was AFK and saw the notification late. I was told if you all apply the "host" file fix though, it wont happen.

I'm afraid it's not quite that simple. The hosts file solution fixes some of the bounces, but just as it used to be before Gamespy took their servers down there are still some issues with various router configs and so forth causing occasional bounces.

There was a few hours more downtime due to another thunderstorm, but no gameplay was lost as I saved the game before shutting it down.

According to the weather forecasts there may be more thunder this weekend, so I may take the game down on short notice. Do note that if you are logged in while I shut the game down, I will save the game before clicking Exit, and you will just lose connection suddenly. You can continue whatever you were doing as soon as the game is running again if that should happen. :)

Of course there is also a possibility that a thunderstorm could take out the power entirely, in which case gameplay will have a probability of being lost. I will post in the unified thread over at RB what savegame I load from should that happen.
