HI, im a new player to this gaem, i bought it 2 days ago....

i've played civ2 for 1 week b4 this..:)

My Questions;

1. My first game i won after 3 hours of play, easiest lvl as Roman with 8 other players... i won by killing em all... Is that good for a first try ever?

2. How should i start the game, aka the first 1 hour?
what i did was: build city, then let worker join city, so i could build a new settler quicker... then i started a granary. i then build a new city about 7-8 spots away from the other city(tried to find much food). Then i builded Granary there too, then settler. from tmy capital i builded 2-3 more settlers, and then a few workers which i pressed Control-A with. i builded 5-6 cities with the settlers, and builded granaries, 1 worker and then 1 settler each in them.... my capital sent a few settlers to the other cities so they got more pop. I then built a few arcers, for exploring, and some warriors for defense... then i started building temples.

How is this start? I could really need a step by step guide! I havent found anything like that on the net....:( I dont need a "First get a good food city, then expand, and build a 3-4 more cities, get some defense. then build some culture and some workers" guide, but a VERY detailed one.. he he does anyone know were i can find one?

3. How do i maximize a city to produce shields, food or commerce? what i usually do is to dubbleclick on the city in the city menu, then the "shield, food, commers SIGNS" get placed out automaticly....

4. What civ to pic!??!?!?!? i dont like attacking in the start. I rather like to build up my cities, and trade a lot... i want to have a nice "tecnology" too, i usualy go with pottery first to get Graneries... My way of playing is to try to get my cities big by culture...

5. when i got lots of cities, and lots of workers, it takes so freakings long time between each turn, becouse i need to look at each and every worker that works! is it a way to make it so that it goes faster?

6. I use the 1.17F patch. the reason for that is that i want to SEE the whole map. I realy hate when i can't look at it...is it a way to reveal the map in the newest patch?!?!?!?! (:

7. Is it a way to make my workers Automaticly build roads between my cities?

8. In the start of the game, what should i use my workers to? just have them on Automatic, or should i build a few mines and such manualy?

If anybody could answer some of these questions, i would be very happy, and it would help me a lot!!

Yours,
INCORNATA

C'mon! PLLLLLLLLLLZ :) he he

EDIT by mod: Look below :D

1. That's very good for a first try, now you're ready for warlord!

2. As for the early game, just expand and be wary of barbarians. Your method is very good and if it works you should run with it. As for a step by step guide hopefully another poster can help with that as I don't have much time for it.

3. Your method for "optimizing" the city is good. You also want to make sure you mine hills and mountains, irrigate plains, and mine grassland(when in despotism, switching to irrigation in some when in monarchy and later govts. in order to maximize your city)

4. For your style of play, the babylonians would suit you quite well.

5. You can automate your workers, i forgot the command but there is a button for it.

6. There is no way to reveal map in the new patch, but you need to play without revealing to be eligible for the special competitions here at CFC.

7. Again I forgot the command but there is a command to make the workers build a road to a certain location, search your manual for that.

8. Build roads, more roads, and mine grassland and hills, especially hills. Irrigation is not too important in early game but you may want to irrigate some plains to help your civ out in the food dept.

I'm sure some other posters can add a lot to this as well. Guys? :D

read around, especially the Sucession Games Forum. There, you will see how others play.

for a builder, Babylon is a very nice civ......

choose religious civ at first, because they have only 1 turn anarchy.....

Better yet, join one at one of the easier levels. :) You can learn much fr comments by your fellow players. I only play succession games. :)

Thx for the answers so far...(= though i hope to get some more answers too...

What i realy need is a detailed instructions on how u build ur 5-6 first cities... is making the worker u get to join the city a good move? Oh, and im gonna play on easiest lvl the first times. so if u ar gonna answer count with that..(=

Incornata: sorry, but you will have to do ti yourself - this is what civ is about! and the first few cities depend a lot on terrain. Again: check the SG stuff!

I never join my worker to capitol, if you do that it mean you dont built road thus no income and you dont irrigate cow or wheat which give growth.

i start with 3 warrior, a settler, while my worker built road on worked tile and road and irrigate bonus food tile, mine shiled grassland to. My second city is built pretty close to capital without overlap( or little). After the first settler then a granery. Capital will produce settler and second city spearman. You can colonize very fast with this opening.

any1 have an answer to this?

For god sakes, if you havn't already turned off animation do it. I will have a field day when PTW debuts if people have animation and are wasting time between turns watching those animations. Automate your workers if you want, but I personally like to micromanage. Keep doing what you're doing and soon you'll fly through instructing your workers. Damn, I could probably finish a Civ II game in 2 hours if I play my fastest.

Turn off animation and move faster, keep micromanaging more and automate if you need to.

Incornata: after you have mined all bonus-grassland and built the raod/rail connections, automate the majority of your workers using shift-a. that way, they will leave existing improvements alone. Works well for me, untill pollution kicks in, then I un-auto them and do it manually, then, once I have Hoover Dam and rail connections, I shift-a them again :D

Haha, or use your workers as bait for enemy units. Nothing like making a stack of 100 units divide then get screwed up so you can walk into their cities.

Son, the acquistion of Rome this year will be a mere matter of marching.

Sounds like one of my first questions. :)

Better than me. :) I thought unit blocking (soze of control) was still there from civ2. There went that first game!

Pretty good plan. Some like a tighter build because of the corruption. I usually use the "warrior-warrior-settler-worker-warrior-settler" type build. Also, an early granary is always good. :D I usually build my pyramid if I have 7 or more cities, since the sheild cost of 7 granaries is more than 1 pyramid. Try to grab as much land as possible, then build wonders. The Great Lighthouse is great if you're stuck on an island. :) Pyramids are bad on an island, since you can't expand, and waste shields.

Better than my first start.

i maximize a city to produce shields, food or commerce? what i usually do is to dubbleclick on the city in the city menu, then the "shield, food, commers SIGNS" get placed out automaticly....

In the city screen, you can place the shields automatically by clicking on the city. You can place them manually by clicking on a 'worked tile' (the shield/food/commerce icon) and moving it else where. It's best to put it on roads, since that adds to your commerce. Always watch when a city is about to grow, or when it grows. You're going to have to watch where the new icon is placed.

pic!??!?!?!? i dont like attacking in the start. I rather like to build up my cities, and trade a lot... i want to have a nice "tecnology" too, i usualy go with pottery first to get Graneries... My way of playing is to try to get my cities big by culture...

Sounds like me. :) You could try a Commercial-Expansionist civ. I think that's India. Commercialist civs has a commerce boost in 1.29f.

5.
when i got lots of cities, and lots of workers, it takes so freakings long time between each turn, becouse i need to look at each and every worker that works! is it a way to make it so that it goes faster?

You can automate the workers. There's a link to a reference guide on shortcuvts in the main page. You can hit 'A' for automation, or 'Shift-A' to automate, but no destroy any existing improvements.

6. I use the 1.17F patch. the reason for that is that i want to SEE the whole map. I realy hate when i can't look at it...is it a way to reveal the map in the newest patch?!?!?!?! (:

If you mean like the multi.sav cheat, then no. But, if you hit CTRL-Shift-M, then the fog-of-war will lift. (but not the unexplored areas)

7. Is it a way to make my workers Automaticly build roads between my cities?

Again, see the reference. I think it's Shift-R, and select the tile you want them to finish at. There's an option for railroads and trade networks, too.

8. In the start of the game, what should i use my workers to? just have them on Automatic, or should i build a few mines and such manualy?

Manually is the best. One thing I've learned is, mine first, road later. Only mine bonus grassland shields (the white/blue dot).

Correction: fog-o-war stays, but all units and improvements and towns are hidden, allowing unobstructed vision of the land (i.e. to find resources or see if a city is on a hill).

THX ppl, that was some nice tips.. :)

A HUGE thx 2 Chieftess...(=

Chieftess knows whereof she speaks. :goodjob:

and let me reiterate: check out the Succession Games Forum. You can learn a lot by watching others play. Pay particular attention to the Training Day Games. I believe there a still a few of those on-going. These give a much more detailed, and critiqued, picture.

Oh, and BTW, remember that strategies that work on Chieftan won't necessarily work on Warlord, and so on up the difficulty levels.

If you want the multi cheat in the newest version, you can download Gramphos Multi-Tool and use the Reveal Map in the Save Game Editor. But again, I don't know if I'd use this if I was just starting.

rangers85: sadly, that tool cannot duplicate one thing the multi-sav did - playing with the entire map visible. You can 'open' the map every turn, but that is cumbersome. i used to train by plaing witht he map visible and learned a lot about the AI

Since nobody really answered this question I'll give it a shot. I believe this command is actually in the manual. If I remembered it right, it's ctrl-shift-R. That will automate your worker to to build roads to link up all your cities. Double check it at the back of the manual in the appendix. (would love to check it for you but I'm at work right now and don't have the manual with me.)
