New screenshots on Gamespot

Not bad, bit upset that the city walls go onto the river ... sigh ... roads look a bit daft too, going into rivers, I hope they sort that out. But really, not bad at all ... Civ is about gameplay and that's what I want to a.know about and b. hope that it is up to scratch!

Personally, I think they have simply got the game in 'Debug' mode to show players as much Graphical information as possible. This is probably why we have seen non-Greek hoplites, non-Roman Praetorians and non-Russian Cossacks. They want to show us as many UU's as possible, and Debug mode is the only real way to do this in as few screenshots as possible. As to Redcoats, I would not be suprised if these turned out to be Queen Victoria's unique unit-as they were the most feared infantry unit of her day.
Now, does anyone want to speculate on what the green and red faces are? Also, what does the 3 arrows (in a triangle signify), and what is does the fist over the city represent (the one with :6 next to it)? Any takers? Maybe a Firaxian?? ;) :)

Yours,
Aussie_Lurker.

Screenshot by screenshot:

First one: Qin Shi Huang looks happy, but why are the only options declare war or leave? There are 3 symbols next to his name on the right (type of religion?). Some other symbol on the left as well. Aside from that, there's something blue in the forests and a settler consists of a whole family (Father, Mother, and two kids)

Second one: Those Russians are building a Forge. I assume they named the cities themselves ;)

Third one: If culture isn't guaranteed, how can you tell who owns a city? Someone (we'll assume British) are building a Redcoat. They are not the teal at the bottom of the screen. There's also a lime green, not sure who they are either.

Fourth one: Back to the Russians. Building a Cossak (Russian uu?). Looks like they have fire circles for the beavers to dance around. Hopefully it will bring rain, food, or whatever else it is they want ;) Its cool to see all the stuff this city shows on screen. They might be sick (green simley), there is a hammer and a beaker with another showing a gold coin, and they are Jewish.

Last Pic: Back to the British. The city is huge and houses go outside of the walls (Which looks cool), some kind of Mayan Pyramid is built, they are both mad and sick, and their religion is Hindusim (?) Aside from that, I'll pretend whoever is working in the water has a house boat ;)

Yeah it's strange -- how come the giants in civ4 bother me whereas the giants in civ3 didn't?

You can see that they have indeed set up worker groups:
A worker with 2 units in Screen 2 compared with 4 or 5 in the other screens

Look at the hills of slauter in screen 3: 2 religions, and its one of those profesied 1 tile cities

In screen 4: you can see a beaker over "The city god built" and a coin over "The city god forgot", perhaps these indicate the priorities of the city managers

I dont know what the green and red faces are. Perhaps the green one tells the player there is a health issue in the city, whereas the red one tells you there are some unhappy (and therefor not working) citizens in the city

And I dont think grids are going to be needed that much. If you have a problem just switch to civ 1 top-down mode.

Judging by the last screenshot they still got a lotta visual stuff to fix...

house on water
wall on water at coast
roads over rivers
no entrances for walls
big house breaking up the wall

Or am I just asking for too much?

Edit: Also on the background of the 4th screenshot the river was flowing kinda unnaturally on the side of the mountain :-/

I should add that the British religion is probably Taoism, not Hinduism, like I said before, and the symbols next to Qin Shi Huang are probably not a type of religion.

So, does it bother anyone else that the city names are partially covered on each end by the little icons? I hope that gets changed before release...all they have to do is move the city name up a bit, or just make sure the city name field can't get overlapped...

I think that was because of the fact that the cities were called things like TheCityGodForgot, Cliffs of Insanity, Hills of Slaughter, CityTimeDestroyer, TheCityGodBuilt. Much longer than normal civ names like Rome, London, Athens, etc.

True, most names are fairly short, and hopefully it is just a small cosmetic thing that won't be a big deal in the final game...i just hope things like 'constantinople', 'washington d.c.', and 'indianapolis' fit okay.

I think the units are even more giant than in Civ, and the detail level of the terrain/city is more noticeable. Considering they are using multi-units now, it would not be difficult if they were just two times the height of the buildings and you know, fit it with the scale of everything else.

The E3 video was more disheartening than the pics. It appears religion is a different way of conducting espionage, maybe something that is welcome. The borders remind me of Black and White, strangely as do the giant units. Maybe someone will make a mod where units gain size as they gain xP.

If I understand your question. I think the Cliffs of Insanity, Redcoat building city has culture color=white.

It's always nice to see qualified posts. But, I hope you don't mind that some people have their own opinion that differs from yours. I am playing Civ since Civ1 came out many years ago, thus I just wanted to share my feelings. But, thanks to you I know now what I am.

The unit size is perfect, the way they always should have been " LARGE "
this is a game of chess not C&C so you want the pieces to be as large as possible. they are not supposed to look like they can walk into the buildings
I would say the only people that complain are uner 15 years of age
and just simply don't have the mental capacity to understand.
The game looks brilliant in every way, can't wait to buy it.

what is the issue that people here get so personal
There is absolutely no need to get personal, this is just a game ;)
I think the moderator should just close this thread or warn people to stay away from such statements. (see above also)

Thanks

I dont mind the terrin; rivers look rather good in them, particuraly, IMO.

I have a problem with the rivers. Is it just me, or is the river in the upper right corner of picture 2 going uphill. It can be seen in picture 4 as well. :crazyeye:

What kind of novice made this happen? :(
