New Technology strategies

Later techs would have to cost more as you would have so many more beakers a turn available. If they didn't you would be able to research techs almost immediately in the mid/late game.

Yes, but the question is: do the tech costs go up as you soon as you traverse even a bit to the right on the tech tree? or is the horizontal alignment of the techs on the tree arbitrary?

My GUESS is, that it goes up generally, but to some amount it's arbitrary. Take for example Astronomy; you can research it with just prerequisite techs from a maximum of FIVE steps to the left of Astronomy in the tech tree. This is not true as far as I can see, for the other techs like Rifling at the same level as Astronomy.
It could be of course that after researching the required techs for Astronomy you suddenly see Astronomy opened up against what appears to you as a ridiculous amount of beakers. We'll know in a week or so :)

Edit: it might well be that Astronomy is the only real exception in the tech tree. This would then be to compensate for a lonely start on an isolated island so you can quickly get to Astronomy to roam the seas and meet other people. Otherwise you would get behind too much in development for lack of trading partners and space to settle. In other situations you probably would research Astronomy at a moment more in line with the placement of it in the tree.
