I have the single disk DVD ROM version for PC. My machine has all the guts it should have. The game has loaded correctly, apparently, but when I come to launch it whirrs away quite enthusiastically until it gets to "Check XML" - which isn't actually very far into the launch - and then it just dies slowly in the DVD player and nothing else happens. I've been a fan of Civ 111 for years, and thought I'f try the improved version, I would be able to make a judgement if I could only get in the damn thing. Any offers?

welcome to cfc :)
this sounds like a failed install - there would be ways to check this, but the first thing I'd do is uninstall completely (i.e. use the control panel to uninstall the game, then delete anything left in documents and settings\<username>\my files\my games\ and documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games (the latter is a hidden directory so you'll need to enable show hidden files in your settings). then reinstall (you should do this with an administrator account).
Could you post what exactly you use (I assume just Civilization 4 - but maybe you bought gold or complete edition?) and what Operating System...

Thanks ori. Have un-installed and re-installed, as suggested, but no joy - it still fades away on launch when it gets to "Check XML". I have the bog-standard Civ IV PC DVD rom (not Gold or Complete). I'm on Windows XP with an Intel 1.8 and 512 MB ram; Nvidia Ge Force 7300 SE / 7200 GS. You need to be aware that this means nothing to me - I just want to play the game!! It may be relevent that I have recently had an extra 80GB hard drive (F) installed, which runs as a slave from the C drive. I ensured installation was entirely on the F drive, however, so I would have thought it should run from that OK.

I just was curious about the operating system because vista behaves different than xp in quite a few ways...
you should be aware that 512 MB RAM are at the low end of what the game needs - so when you get it to run you might find that huge maps are not fun to play.
Back on topic:
please open ...documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4\civilizationIV.ini and set all items with log in their name to 1 and hydepythonexceptions to 0. Then start a game. Once it crashes (or hangs or whatnot) end the program if it still running and post tha contents of ...documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4\logs as a zip file.
Does it give any error message when it finally dies or does it just hang forever?

Nothing simple like an error message, I'm afraid. Not sure what a zip is or how to create one, however here is log of last attempt....

[16526.543] DBG: FILE Cat Init
[16534.575] DBG: NOT Using XML cache, failed to find crc.dat file
[16534.735] DBG: Game Init
[16534.735] DBG: Multiplayer Init

Does this help?

could you just post the whole init.log file? its in the logs directory I posted above. This part you post just says that the xml stuff does not work or is not saved between starts (obviously in your case it does not work - but that part of the log would look similar on my machine since I do not allow the xml stuff to be saved between sessions).

I am sure we are talking about different log files :)
you are looking at:
...\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\log\init.log
what I would like to see is:
...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Logs
I would like to see all of the files in there - but at least init.log and pythonerr.log
You can attach single files here by clicking on Go Advanced and then on manage attachments - you can only attach 3 files in one post but if necessary just post more than one post :)
