I am new to Civ, and the first game of the series being Civ V, and i love it. In fact, I've wasted most of my break playing this game. Now, reading all of those CivV-hating-threads, I'm compelled to buy Civ IV. Should I? If so, whats better in Civ IV that Civ V doesnt give?

If you are new to Civ then all I can say is that the difference between them is that Civ 5 is crap and Civ 4 BTS is outstanding for the most part. I sugest you give up Civ 5 and get into 4.

oh boy, this won't end well.

Well, you have to keep in mind that most of us played civ for the last 15-20 years, and we had huge expectations from Civ5. Then it turned out the game was not as good as we expected, and now people are probably over-reacting a bit to compensate the disappointment and you can read very harsh critics.

I think it would be very interesting if you go and try Civ4 (with BTS expansion!) for yourself, and then come back and say what you think. A fresh perspective from an outsider is always good.

One advice: don't let the poor graphics turn you down, give the game a try. The game concept is similar of course, but the 2 games are actually quite different in many details.

If you love Civ V you wont appreciate the greatness that is Civ IV BTS. So just stick with Civ V. All Civ lovers are welcome :wavey:

CIV4 BTS, yea good but micro management pain. CIV 5 awesome. see my signiture for "home work done"

It's great that you are enjoying Civ5. I'd stick with it until you are really actually looking for something new. Then go for Civ4, and if the consensus is anything to go by, you'll enjoy that even more.

It is entirely possible to greatly enjoy both games.

Thanks for all the comments guys! I think I'll go try civ iv right now. Just curious, is civ iv to civ v comparable to starcraft 1 and2? That rts is one I really enjoy 1 much more than 2.

Thats probably the perfect way to put it, but just so you know, if you get into Civ IV, you may very well ruin Civ V for yourself

I wouldn't. I like civ4 more, but for new players, I'd recomend civ5

Well, if you think you are going to like this type of game for years, maybe you should try civ4. But if you just want to play a month or so, civ5.

Civ and starcraft are very different games. I don't think you can compare them at all.

But then I felt SC2 > SC1 while ciV < cIV.

Besides, the same hate was given to Civ IV when it came out, so don't go thinking that Civ V is inferior. They just changed things, didn't work out 100% but they will fix it (or we will start a crusade against them).
Read the first post here and you will understand: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=390830

I wouldn't listen to all the hate here. Some like it, some don't. If you like the game, play it.
It's enjoyable most of the time. It's not really that bad.

Exactly, 4 is a great game, but in its own way so is 5, 5 will get better (especially with not having to worry about whether theyll continue working on it now that shafer is gone, thanks alot greg:) ) id say stick with it, or play 4, its up to you, both are really great games, ive played my fair share of 4 but ive kinda moved on, i wish they would implement some things from 4 into 5, religions and civics (social policies are really lame compared to the civics, oh well) but anyway, they are about to (at some point) release the rest of the modding tools for ciV and when that happens expect a flood of new mods, maps, scenarios, etc to come in. stick with 5, it'll pay off in the end.

And as a final quote:
That said, everyone loves to complain about this game like it is this horrible thing and CIV IV was a god send. Truth is, the exact same topics were made about CIV IV when it came out. I remember posts saying it was "unplayable" "full of glitches" and the death and the franchise and how it would never live up to Civ III. The fact of the matter is, the CIV 4 that everyone loves so dearly is HEAVILY modified from the original. Nothing has changed. CiV will be patched and expansions will come out and then everyone will think it is the next greatest thing to sliced bread.

Good old "play it because it may become good" argument xD

(I even said he should stick to civ5 if he is new, it's just the argument made me rolleyes)

I'm a new Civ IV BTS player (since august) and I was disappointed with Civ V and even though I've tried to give V chance again and again I get bored really quickly.

My first game of Civ V was amazing, but after that it got reperitive and boring, and Civ IV just has so much more of everything.

Graphically I also prefer IV to V.

lol, it may or it may not become better... who knows... but all previous iterations have become better with age. so as your right its kind of a ridiculous argument to make, i made it whatever lol, its most likely going to be the truth. i guess we'll see with time, either way i think its safe to say 4 wont get any better and they wont create any more expansions or anything to make it (4) any better.
