I just bought this game. It seems like it should be pretty fun. But I can't figure out tactical combat. I've started four games now, at the difficulty level called "Tutorial." I seem to have the mechanics down pretty well. But every time I enter into combat for the first time, I am utterly destroyed. Its not just that I lose--I can't figure out how to even damage the enemy. In each case, enemy lasers were destroying my ships in one shot, while mine were doing zero--literally zero--damage to them. In the last game I played I finally managed to do 2 damage to one ship. This was from my hitting it with one or two missiles. And that was it. I got 2 damage in on him, he destroyed my entire fleet.

This last battle I described was against a single Antarean Raider. My fleet consisted in two jaguars, three mirages, and a few other little ships.

I don't know if I'm missing something in the GUI or if I'm missing something in the gameplay. Any hints would be great!

It sounds like this is Master Of Orion II. Did you select tactical combat on or off? If off you are not able to design ships and refit them to those new designs.

Anatarians are a special races in the game that is not on the map. You have to build a dimensinal portal to go to their planet. Anyway they have superior tech and their ships have a special armor call Xent.....

So until you have decent tech they wilbe hard for your ships to kill. Missiles are effective from star bases or ships.

Also they always have the inititive and attack first. Later you will be able to whack them easily.

Yes, this is MoO2 I'm talking about.

But I think I must not have made my problem clear. I don't understand what you mean by saying I'm "Not able to design ships and refit them to those new designs." More precisely: I know what you're talking about, I just don't understand the relevance.

I have tactical combat on. When there is combat, I get an overhead map where I control my ships, have them fire lasers and missiles at enemy ships, move them around, etc.

I'm not sure what ship design and refitting has to do with anything.

I do also know about the Antareans and the dimensional portal.

My problem isn't that the ships I'm encountering are "hard to kill." They seem to be literally impossible to kill. As I said, in four games, I've managed to do a grand total of two points of damage. Meanwhile, enemy ships are doing upwards of 20 or 30 damage per shot when their ships fire on my ships.

This isn't just a problem with Antareans. This happens in all combat against all races I've encountered in my games so far.

Thanks for any help, again!

You don't hit because the ratio of your beam offense to their beam defense is poor. When this ratio is 1 there is a 50 percent chance to hit them from point blank. You find all the technical details in this nice guide:

http://db.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/file/master_of_orion_ii_weapon_calc.txt

(direct link is prolly disabled, but you can still use "save target...")

There are also nice hints about battle in this guide by cybersaber:

but since you are new....I would first try to figure it out on your own...

Okay, so, do you think I'm just not researching enough military stuff?

In my last game, I researched only military stuff as far as I could.

In the strat guide you linked to, one viable strategy listed involves prioritizing military research after nearly all other research. This makes me think it can't be that crucial for me to research ship advances quickly.

I still find myself at a loss, then, as to why I am doing zero damage per shot while enemy ships are doing 20 to 30 damage per shot.

Ok, I first thought maybe you had tactical off and then could not make a decent ship. It now sounds like you just did not make a decent ship, either do to a lack techs or an understanding of what is needed.

I rarely turn on anties as they are too easy to handle and I only play impossible level. They were fun for a bit, but once you get the knack, they can't do anything.

As was mentioned, if you have beams, you need good computers. That EC25% for beams is going to see you miss too much and lasers beams are lowest powered beam weapon. Damage 1-4.

Anties will have 10 times the armor as the Titanium. They may have damper and lighting fields as well as Reflector. They will have better engines for the early game.

You have laser or nucs and you probably do not even have battle scanners yet.

But a star base and a few frigates with nucs can do the job. Forget beams until you have at least battleships and at least opt comps and battle scanner.

Post a save of the time that you are having these battles, so we can see what the ships look like, what the research path has been, because by the time the antis come for you, no reason to not be ready.
