New to GOTM / QSC

They say you should never start with an apology so I won't apologise for these (probably answered elsewhere) questions. I'm fairly new to the fantastic idea of GOTM and have been trying to get to grips with exactly what you have to do. Firstly, there are 3 mirror patches for v1.29. Is there a preferred one to use ie. are there any that screw up your computer? Next step is to download GOTM and install it. Fine. Then it gets a bit hazy with regard to QSC. What is the recommended method and format for recording movement of units/dates etc (does that make sense?) and how do I view those of other gamers (what application should I use to fire them up?). Also, what is meant by a 'timeline' - meeting certain criteria by a given date? Where can I view these timelines?
Whilst navigating the GOTM intro pages, I've found a number of links that don't work. Do others find this also?
