New to site, help!

Not an expert, but one place to start like they suggested is any Windows Updates and RESTARTING YOUR COMPUTER! :)

Posting the files you are missing may also help the kind sirs assist you.

Just did a windows update, loaded the most recent Vanilla HOF mod (had previously loaded the latest patch.) Expecting version 103 and got version 101 dialog appeared when I tried to load the GOTM. I ran AssetChecker and here is what appeared:

Vanilla: 134 errors have been found. the first one: Assets\CvGameCoredll.dll Error files do not match. Any ideas?

Run through the checklist in our FAQ.

You should install the patches from the downloadable updaters. Get them via the CFC home page link. They are much more reliable than the in-game update.

Have you installed Beyond the Sword? If not you should do so, otherwise you need to change your vanilla (and Warlords if you have it) CvGameCoreDFLL.dll file. See my instructions earlier in this thread.

Just to add to the info here, I have *never* run windows update, and have been able to play every GOTM and HOF mod without doing anything extra.

Probably not the best thread to post on but anyways:
*puts on helmet to protect from noob bashing*
1) If I install HoF Mod for Beyond the Sword will i still be able to play Beyond the sword on internet/lan with people who don't have it installed?
2) Am i too late to start BOTM 12?
3) Is this the right thread to post this?
4) Will i be laughed at for being rubbish?

Questions 3 and 4 not essential.
N.B. first post WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. :D

1) Yes you have to load the HOF mod for XOTM or if you want to submit for the HOF, but you can still play unmodded BTS.

2) No, you have until the 15th of december to submit. You still have 20 days left which should be enough!

3) I don't think it's the wrong thread ;)

4)@Grey2ham for no particular reason :D

And welcome! (though I'm still new here too)

Thanks for the help & the welcome.
I'll get on with downloading everything I need after work and get going!
Not reloading is going to drive me mad! I guess it takes a few games to get used to it?
 @ myself for no reason aswell!

Welcome Grey2ham! Gotm's are great fun...pretty much all I have time to play anymore with a few MP exceptions...

Take your time early on...and you will get used to it rather quickly!

Ahh ... but is your machine updating these things automatically behind your back?

One way to tell, run the update, and first it will list all the ones that are available (divided into critical and optional). You don't have to install any of them, but if the critical list is in three figures, then you really have not updated ever, and if it is just a handful, then auto updates have been occurring ... depending I suppose on how far back "never" goes for your machine ... :mischief:

Actually, if you play MP through the Gamespy portal on internet, you must already be updated to the latest patch (v3.17) before you can enter a game. On a LAN, you can get away with almost anything as long as you accept that "This player has some modded files that do not match".

As long as on the start screen you don't go to Advanced Options/Load a MOD and manually select the HOF mod (which restarts the game in HOF mode), you will still be able to play MP in normal 3.17 unmodded (which will continue to be the default start set-up for your game). Note, when the HOF mod is running, MP is NOT an option. But HOF mod does not run by default unless you start game by clicking on a HOF-modded save.

After installing the HOF mod, just clicking on the GOTM save (which is made for HOF mod) will automatically load the game in the HOF mod. If you want to use the HOF mod for another game (for a HOF submission, for example) where you generate a map, that's what the Advanced option (Load a MOD) is for. HOF mod won't work unless you first update BtS to v3.17.

OK, maybe I make it sound complicated, but I meant to actually say how simple it is. Anyhow, Skurn answered the questions very succinctly and accurately.

Now folks can correct anything I've mistated.

PS- Everyone starts out as a noob, no shame in that. Some of us (speaking for myself) remain noobs much longer than is socially acceptable, however.

I get an error message saying my game will be invalid for submission from the hall of fame mod upon starting civ 4 BTS. Any reason why?
A gentle push to the correct thread and i'll hop over.

I think thats quite normal. Does the message contain any further infos (as about specific files or folders)?

It's not normal if you have the correct privileges on your system. If you ignore that error message your entry will be excluded.

If you are running Windows Vista you should check out the information here to ensure you are set up correctly.

If you are running XP then you need to be logged into your PC as an administrator.

I thought he was talking about windows update, not the civ game updates ... was I mistaken?

<shrug>
Personally, I would have started GOTM's a half year earlier than I did except I was afraid of the MOD requirement and worried it could affect how my game worked in MP. I had a real heck of a time getting Gamespy to work in the first place, (firewall issues) and was afraid I might screw it up somehow. Needn't have worried.

As for windows, I use XP and recently upgraded to service pack 3 (from sp2) and noticed no change to Civ/mod workings. And you couldn't pay me to use Vista....

Hmm ... could be trouble ...

For WOTM 20 I installed the new mod (on my Vista box), launched a generic game with it and got a message that it was ineligible for HOF and GOTM

I then did the elevate to run as administrator stuff, (and checked the privileges stuff, which were already fine ... the privileges stuff was just to stop the options window exit hang, wasn't it?) and then only got a message that it is ineligible for HOF (but no comment about GOTM).

Now, I have been seeing the HOF ineligible message with every GOTM since we started using the mod, (at least I think so ...) I assumed that since the second message, after the fixes, did not say ineligible for GOTM that I was OK ... was I wrong?

AlanH should probably answer this, but I encountered similar message on WOTM20 and was told that is peculiar to that WB save. Obviously team play is not submissible to HOF (nor are GOTM maps, for that matter). I think they have fixed it so that the warnings do not appear in XOTM's later than that though, so you might have a problem. I get no warnings in any XoTM's I've played after WOTM20.

The problem messages are the new ones in the current HoF Mods that pop up to tell you your game will be ineligible for HOF *and* GOTM. You *must* deal with those by fixing your privileges and elevating to Admin.

The red warnings about HOF only that appear within game screens are not a problem. *All* GOTM games are ineligible for HoF, as they are built using WorldBuilder. But the red messages should only appear in a few games these days, as we try to set the games up to suppress them as it confused players. Some game makers are better at suppressing them than others, but I built the WOTM 20 start files from Gyathaar's WB file, and I thought I had done so.

Whew! ... safe (I think).

To clarify for any confused readers, the messages that must be fixed are pop up windows that refer to HOF and GOTM and show up even before the game opens. If these are showing up, the game won't be accepted for XOTM.

The other warnings are red text that shows up within game, in the opening screen (and maybe in the settings panel?), and refer to HOF only. These are not a problem for XOTM validity.

(Have I got this right?)

Yes. But I still need to understand why you saw red in WOTM20!
