New to the MP scene

So I consider myself to be a decent Civ player, but as of late have become slightly bored with the predictable gameplay. So I thought to myself "Maybe its time to try MP?". I have (obviously) never played MP before (well, one game in CIV IV where I got totally owned).

Anyway, the problem I ran into is this : There is nobody playing MP! I sat in the (empty) loby for two hours, waiting for someone to show up. I even tried hosting my own game. No one came.

Is this normal? I understand that there may be some problems with MP, but I figured there would be at least one other person playing. Am I missing something obvious? Or are there just no players playing MP?
 
maybe read the other threads before starting new?

u can:
Shift steam profile to New York (east coast) zone there u ll find some "open games"
Do that if u like games with dumb setting which never end before every1 quit

Ask the NQ guys if they r fancy traing a game with u
Do that if u like playing 7+ hour games and got no real life and are badat playing civ

Join league and league chat
Do that if u r somewhat decent at playing civ and like playing also duels/teamers

Just host yourself
Do that if u just want host yourself and see if people like your settings

Why all this hostility? Even though you don't like to play like that, many people do. You should cut us some slack and stop acting like a condecending arrogant besser-weisser.

Every time you mention NQ in your posts, which for some reason you do alot, you always include some negative commentaries about it. We might be bad at civ, but what's the point of saying that we have no life?

If the reason is because you got kicked from our group, that's only because you quit our games. If that is the case, you constantly say yourself that you don't like to play like with our rules, so why do you even care?

Why can't you just leave us in peace and stop acting like an ass?:thumbsdown:

P.S. I really don't want to spend my time discussing these trivialities at the forums, but after having reviewed all of your unmerited ranting against NQ, I felt I had to say something.

Contrary to what you may think, I have better things to do in life than to defend NQ at civfantatics forums in face of a fanatical civleague players; not tackling that many Civ players think that League Rules are complete bullocks and have nothing to do with Civ

If you like Civ being played with all the civ rules intact then come to no quit lobby talk to some of "us fools with no life" (not quite a direct quote from nt but close) and give it a shot.

No real life? hmm got girlfriend, dog and more than fulltime job, playing once or twise/week. (except when in Spain or Italy since I travel a lot) So when I do have a rare ocation when I got time I want an intresting game. And a lot of times there are intresting games with NQ players.

Bad at playing civ? I m ranked 7th in duel and 14 overall at civplayers. Didnt take that long... Not as good as you but I wouldn t call it bad.

WHAT DID CIV LEAGUE EVER DO FOR OSS....WHEN I STARTED PLAYING CIV 5 IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE 2 PLAY A GAME WITH ALL THE RULES...EVERYONE JUST QUITT,OR GAME GOT BUGGED AND THERE WAS NO COMMUNITY FOR OSS..I SPEND ALOT OF TIME PLAYING WITH QUITTER AND UNSERIUS PLAYERS..THANKS FOR THE HELP CIV LEAGUE.FOR OSS NORMAL PLAYERS...WE ARE TIRED OF ALWAYS BEING ATTACKED BY YOU "PRO" GUYS........EVERYONE AT NQ ARE HAPPY WITH OUR RULES AND GAMEPLAY... Wow. Ok, so (and I am already on East Coast) I finally was able to play a MP game, a tiny pangaea that still took over 8 hours to play, with just one other player. From what I gathered from him, basically the only thing you can do is try to host a game and hope someone shows up, which they may or may not, and sometimes you find yourself waiting several hours.
Anyway -- two things I noticed for my first MP is this (which may be of use to other first timers):

Expect long, long delays, regardless of map size (a tiny map probably takes about 2 - 2.5 hours in SP, and like I said we went 8 hours in a tiny map).
Learn (fast) that your opponent can move and attack during your turn, and vice-versa.

Really? With 6 players, it can be 5-6 hours max. Well if you can get nukes around turn 170, it really helps :nuke:. But most of the time everyone can concede victory to a runaway player after 4 hours of play. If they don't, maybe 2 players are still there and try to win but at 1vs1 turns should be way faster.

Domination is by far the best way to win the game. Pangea style maps are the best because you don't have to wait and struggle for amphibious assaults. I played some water maps, but with frigates around turn 75 it also really helps :goodjob:

Have you played at quick pace speed? If you didn't, you really should next time.

To answer your original question. The problem you are having is that the ingame games list is regional, and therefore you will not see all games around the planet that are being played.

No he is not an Admin, never has been. I made him a chat monitor to help me ban the idiots from the Russian pirate site spamming our lobby, but he is not management in anyway, and I don't have authority to tell him what to post on other fan sites. I only moderate the Civplayers forums, I would not want the job of moderating the CFC forums at all :P I make many players Steam chat monitors so that they can post game announcements for other players, since I can't let everyone post announcements or I end up with more idiots using our announcements for spam. Civplayers has to be an open league and steam chat, that is how we grow and promote the MP community. Being a private group may work well for the NQ group but it would not work well for the league.

I myself just gave this guy a few possible options to get ANY game (that what he was asking for)

ur the one constantly talking about us. Im just defending NQ from all you ridiculous accusations.
 
My advice to all new players who want good games of all kinds are this. Join both the league and NQ and try games at both places. Join both chatrooms when logging in to steam (you will actually find that some people are in both chatrooms quite a lot)

When you want to play a good ffa with the possibility to have alliances etc and time for a longer game join a game in the NQ lobby. When you got mabye 2-4h and you want a good duel, 2vs2, 3vs3 or CTON look for a game in the league lobby.

That is what I do.

Also ad all the people you play with that you like to your steam friend list for good and intresting games, partners in 2vs2 and 3vs3 or for a good ffa with friends once in a while!
