newbie question

Hey guys, is there a limit on your ability before you can participate in the Game of the Month feature? I've only played it like 2 or three times

There is no ability level requirement for the GOTMs.

There are even three saves to choose from. You can see descriptions for the three saves for the latest GOTM here .
Toward the bottom.

Conquest, then Open, then hardest is Predator.

Disclaimer: To play GOTM you do need to install a resource pack, that contains special units and resource graphics. There are utilites that do it for you around here. Or apparently PTW will work, sometimes.
To play COTM requires only C3C patched to v1.22

Hi guys,

Lurking in on these GOTM threads to gain insight into my playing skills.... I understand that the GOTM requires some additional patches (mentioned above). Aside from that, is there a big difference between GOTM and COTM? I know they changed some subtle things between CIV3+PTW and C3C, but are they enough to warrent entirly different maps and scenarios? What is the reason for that?

Thanks
-Jim

Not if you have Play the World and Conquests. The Classic GOTMs and C3C COTMs can be played in those versions out of the box. You only need to mod your software if you only have Civ3 version 1.29, which has to be patched to make it play like PtW. This option generally applies mostly to Mac players only, but both Mac and PC players can use single all-in-one patch installers to modify their software to run GOTMs.

Not so subtle! Leaders in PtW were split into Scientific Leaders and Military Leaders. Along with that C3C armies are immensely more powerful, as is artillery. There are several major changes to the options for technical development, and new great wonders that shift the balance of the game considerably. There are two new civ traits - agricultural and seafaring - and some of the previous tribes have been reassigned to these traits. There's a new specialist -the civil engineer? The sum of these changes was deemed impossible to even out to allow scores to be compared for games played on the same map in C3C and PtW, so we decided to provide two competitions. We didn't double the administration work-load for the fun of it

The GOTM Reference Thread is a very useful summary of key resources for all players interested in GOTM. It includes the link to a discussion thread that includes a definitive post by SirPleb giving an excellent summary of the changes in game play resulting from these differences.

AlenH,

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I had seen a few mentions of resource packs and what not, but this clarifys it.

Thanks
-Jim.
