Newbie Questions 2 - post them in THIS thread please!

I do not believe that a unit can retreat from another fast unit, regardless of whether the move is 2, 3 or higher (in mods)

Nope :(
Are you sure that all culture buildings are destroyed?

Yep.

The unis needn't be fortified IIRC, just not moce at all.

culturally linked starts: use them or not, as you please... it can get very tiring to always start with the same neighbours.....

If a colony, which is necessarily outside a civ's territory, is undefended, can you capture it without this being interpreted as an act of war ?

Dran: I don't think so..... The only way to destroy a colony w/o war is by having cultural borders swallow it up - via expansion or ba founding a new city.

So, presumably if only culture buildings are destroyed when a city is captured, then if culture buildings are modded to give no culture, will they remain?

International Incident, what happens? AI declares war on you instantly or what? Which missions are affected? If so then I might have to limit my espionage missions.

Sure you can mod buildings to give no cultural but then what would be the point? Just to keep them happy? I'd rather let them be destroyed and then rebuild them. BTW, does this apply to cultural city flip, too? All cultural buildings are destroyed.

yes culture building are destroyed (dissapear) when a city flips.

If you set temples, etc. to produce 0 culture, how will you expand your borders to get use of all the city tiles? ICS?

If a military unit attacks a colony, it is war. If your culture borders overtake a colony, nothing happens, the colony just dissapears.

The impossible only exists in the minds of mankind.
Those who believe it impossible will fail before the attempt is made. Those that believe it possible will succeed even if they fail.

That is unless you believe it is possible to take on a veteran spearman, on a hill, accross a river in a walled town with 7 regular warriors, then you are just looney. :D

can be - usually depends on your rep and the power relation. If they are afraid they won't declare war.

be very carefull modding cultural and happiness buildings; it quickly un-balances the game.......

In the old Civ I days, you could launch your spaceship when it was only partially complete, and it would either get there slower, or faster, or not at all, depending on how many of each component you built.

My question is, in Civ III, when can you actually launch your ship. Which components are required? It seems like the launch button is active, but I've never tried launching a partially completed ship yet. Is it even possible? Is the party lounge required? I've never seen other civs launch without it.

Thanks.

Yeah, that could lead to some cool situations in space races with the ai. I think even the probability of it arriving with the current set of components was shown.

AFAIK you cannot launch partially complete a spaceship. It needs all components specified in the bic-files (modders, pls correct me if I'm wrong). In an unmodded game each component is needed once.
As soon as it's finished, the LAUNCH btn is lit. And once you click it :king: WON THE SPACERACE

I do miss the old space race days. It was also nice to be able to build your ship, and launch it exactly when you wanted to, so you could maximize your score and take our your opponents at your leisure. That's kind of a bummer now, because I haven't been able to find a way to delay launch. I guess about the only way to delay it is to stop producing the party lounge, but in most of my games, the other closest civs are 9/10's of the way complete too, so you risk a spacerace loss if you delay.

I can't believe space travelers these days. I've gotta research laser so they can have a laser light show in the party lounge, or else they won't go:). That ain't right.

It's true tough, space race ain't the same anymore.
I'm wondering why they "streamlined" it that way. No more adding more thrust to make it arrive before 5000AD and that sort of stuff...
How unrealistic is it that every space mission succeeds? Was Apollo XIII just a flick based on a novel or did I miss something out?

Don't understand this laser issue either. Do ppl really have nuclear power thingies in their laser pointers? Wouldn't that be dangerous?

I really hated the space race in CIVII (building until you dropped and then when the rocket was finished reassigning all those cities)......

I've got antoher question though....
Is it bad for my reputation to raze a city? And what about abandoning?

And when I'm at war, but not actually fighting an opponent, what happens with was weariness?

Razing a city will give you a reputation hit. Not nearly as bad as violating a ROP or breaking a trade deal, but still damaging. I haven't noticed any repercussions from abandoning a city, either through the new "abandon" option or by building a worker or settler to take out the last population.

War weariness accrues the entire time you are at war. Your success or lack of fighting does not affect it.

Shaitan is wrong about WW IMO. Lack of fighting reduces WW a lot, since you are not losing any units.

Losing units, having them in enemy territory and having enemies in your territory increase WW.

Evincar is right about WW. As long as you
  • do not loose any units
  • do not have units in enemy territory at end of turn
  • do not let enemy units stay in your territory during turns
WW is nonexistent to minimal. This means that you can drive over an enemy with modern weapons without any war weariness if you are carefull and lucky.

Abandoning cities doesn't give a rep hit. But it des redistribute the unhappiness in the city to nearby cities, so do be carefull......

Okay Y'all, I'm a long time payer of every version of Civ. I love the game more than just about anything else, just ask my wife. However I'm not Obsessive about it. By that I mean I have never made an effort to dissect every little nuiance of the game. So I'm going to use this forum to ask what I'm certian are some really simple and stupid questions. I hope you all will bear with meand I will greatly appreciate any advice given.

Okay first Question: Say I have gone ahead and bought Walls for many of my cities, but now I've gotten to the point of the game where they are essentially useless, do I sell them? Similarly, I built several Graneries and then captured the Pyramids, Sell the graneries?

Press on!

NO do not sell the granaries! They do not become obselete when you get the Pyramids. And the Pyramids only works for new cities I think - they come with it.

Sure, sell the Walls. I do it to my towns when they become cities. Although it is really stupid - only 2 gold and 0 shelids you get out of it. So I've stopped building them b/c I never need them anyway - I am such a pacifist.

I had an unmodded game in which I built up a huge amount of Calvary to take on the English who only had Horsemen. So I declared war on them, fortified my Calvary on a mountain, and they kept on losing! Argh why is that? I still won though using Marines. I only lost 1 Marine.

I got a load of what some people call "ROP rape" when all I did was move units to their territory and declare war when they ordered me out. But the AI will accept a lump sum but not gpt? What?

My naval power is very limited - is this why the stupid Chinse keep on "patroling" inside my borders with their battleships and their ironclads?

What does Flight have to do with the Collusus becoming obselete? I am curious because I know why all others become obselete.

You can sell the granaries IF you are certain you will never lose the pyramids (and the city is on the same continent as the pyramids). You only get a few gold from them, so unless you really need the money, don't bother. If you sell the granaries, the pyramids still keeps a granary in the city (if that city is on the same continent). The pyramids makes any existing granaries maintanence free and adds a granary to any town that did not have them.

I almost never build walls because my cities become size 7 pretty quick. For those cities that will never grow to size 7 or higher, you might as well keep them. Some cities that max out at size 7 or 8, you may want to keep them just in case that city ever drops in population (from settler/worker production, bombarding from the AI, etc.). Walls are maintanence free, aren't they?

ROP rape is when you are in their territory before war is declared. It is referred to as rape because most of the time humans send a massive army inside the AI's territory, then war is declared, and the AI isn't given as much time to respond (usually NO time). To keep a good reputation, have ALL of your units outside their territory, then declare war by renegotiating peace.

Because of a bad rep, the AI will only accept lump payments. You have proven (because of breaking previous treaties) to be untrustworthy for them to trust that you will keep making payments for the next 20 turns.

If you don't have a navy to deter them, why shouldn't they freely patrol your waters and menace you?

Don't really know the answer to your colossus question.
