Is there some way to set the game in PTW so that cities with 1 pop and no culture are not automatically destroyed when taken?

Hey,

I like playing the ancient age and usually find my self quiting the game during the industrial age and statring over.
(Here is the Question)
How can I make the ancient era last longer like in the ancient scenario of CIV II??????

Thanks,

Go into the editor and make set the first techs in the medevil era to have a pre-requisite from the modern era. Of course, this means that you would forever be stuck in ancient era.

@ Capt Ajax:
You could change the rules in the editor so the minimum & maximum number of turns needed to research each tech is larger, that would slow down research and keep the game "low tech" right enough. :)

No way I know of.

I suppose it might be in the editor, and I don't have the game here at work to check, but I doubt it.

I believe it's all part of Firaxis' attempt to make warmongering less "useful" than it was in earlier incarnations of Civ.

@Skullbones:

I just checked the editor and there doesn't appear to be any way to set it.

You should check the editor yourself, it contains lots of useful info :groucho:

I checked before I posted, but I was hoping I just overlooked it or that there was another way to do it.

@Padma, yea it DOES make ancient warfare a lot less useful. I've had PTW a week and this is my first major gripe about it. Now, you have to bring along a bunch of settlers when you go to war.

I've just started with civ and have been playing PTW for about
a week. I've noticed that I can put the research slider up to
100% and still get the benefit even when I own zero gold.
The game will say something like
treasury 0 (-512)
Showing money going out when I have none.
It seems counterintuitive that the game would do that and
I was surprised when I noticed it. Am I missing something?
It feels like I'm cheating, but I get my techs so fast
I hadnt seen this issue posted so I thought I'd ask about
it. Thanks.

as far as I can tell it doesnt take anything away.

I installed civ III then ran the 1.29f patch
then installed PTW and ran the 1.14f patch

I mean I've set it like this from the beginning of the game and
run all the way to the spaceship without noticing anything missing.

Orange - what level? I think at chieftain level, it doesn't sell any buildings.

Just thought I'd follow up to say that when I tried a game
on warlord it did charge me a unit or building when my
treasury went negative.

I have another question though.
I am wondering how the characteristics that each culture has
effect the game. I know it decides which techs you start out with, but does it affect anything else. ie
Does a scientific culture get a research bonus?
Does an expansionist culture do better if you build more cities?

Also in the PTW manual it talks about the preferred govenment for
each culture. Is there some unique negative effect from not using
that govenment?

Thanks

AFAIK the effects of traits are as follows:

Militaristic : cheap barracks etc, higher chance to promote units following a victory
Relgious : cheaper temples etc, one turn only anarchy between governments
Expansionist: can build scouts at start, get better goody hut results
Commerciaql : cheap commerce buildings, one bonus gold in larger cities (13+)
Industrious : faster workers, one bonus shield in large cities (13+)

edited to correct error in city size quoted - the bonus applies to metropolis only, size 13+

Is it just me, or do elite units get their arses kicked more often than veterans? I know they're supposed to better, but they seem to lose fights more often. Really gets my goat.

I keep seeing that too !

I've learned to carefully save my precious Elite units and only send them into battles I judge they can win.... but then to see time and again, they get the worst die rolls, and die...! The kicker is that my next (lesser quality) unit easily finishes off what butchered my Elite!

I'm not a newbie, but I usually play with a single continent. I'm in a game with two large continents, and I don't know how to get cruise missiles from 'my' continent to the continent dominated by the evil, warmongering greeks. I want to defend the cities I've captured from them!

Yes, you can load them onto transports, but not when the boat is in port, it has to be in the water... move the CM to the coast, and then manually move it onto the adjacent boat.

At destination, you can unload in a port, or you can manually activate the CM and move it onto the coast (a RR would be convenient from there on...)

Why you can UNload them at ports, but not LOAD them at ports, seems bizarre to me.... :crazyeye:

According to a discussion in another thread, it may have some slight effect on the AI civs' attitude towards you depending on what government you are running at the time.

I don't think there is any positive or negative effect when you are playing that civ.

I have some questions regarding the Great Library.

I never used to build it, but on my last game - Emperor Level, Persia Civ - I was very behind on the tech race but then I conquered Zulu's capital and they had the GL in it.

I was surprised because, after it, I got 5 free advances: 1 for getting into the golden age and other 4 due to the GL.

I always thought that a GL would give you 1 or 2 advances already discovered by other two known civs, but not that many advances for free.

So my question is: let's say you are playing with the japanese on a game that the romans and babylon have 10 advances you don't have, will you get the 10 advances from them if you build the GL?

Another question is: when does the GL expire?

Thanks.
