Someone told me last night that (specifically) Cavalry can retreat form other Cavalry units.

Maybe it's my mind (and that is up for review soon!), but I was sure fast units couldn't retreat against other fast units.

I could wait to get home tonight and do a test, but I thought it would me more fun to raise it here and get giggled at for such a simple question...

fast vs fast cannot retreat - period. If they can it is a bug (though it WOULD make sense if a M=3 unit can withdraw from a M=2 unit at half the chance of retreat from a M=1 unit).

<names_witheld_pending_bribes> will be most suprised to find out they are wrong :D

Sorry, again on that Skip Video thing:

Lt. Killer mentioned the FAQ. It's a great FAQ! I took some good advice from it already. In fact, I did look in there for a tip for the video thing. But I missed it, as the solution is described for another problem (blank screen).

Please I'm not complaining in any way. But why not on a next update include a specific question/answer on how to not play the video?

OTOH, it's maybe not such a frequent question after all and more haegint being a blind slob. I would not take offence :-)

(Sorry beating this silly subject to death.)

haegint: I is always advisable to read the enitre FAQ once. That said, if you use the search function there should be several threads (it might be the words are too short, but 'intro' and 'video' should work).

and I WILL include that in the FAQ ;)

I feel stupid to keep asking questions here, but I was wondering why it takes 40 turns to research writing if it is the first tech you research. Every turn I checked to see if there would be a difference between 10% and 100% science, but it never was.

I might as well have researched Bronze working for 20 turns and then writing for 20 turns...

I have version 1.29.

Thanks.

Techs that haven't been discovered yet are more expensive, research wise, than other. If you hover over the available techs in your F6 screen, you'll see that some are cheaper than others. This is because the cheaper techs have already been discovered by other civs.

the price for Writing is higher than for many other techs. If you now only produce 1 or two beakers - well, you need longer than 40 turns at 1 and 40 turns at two.... there you go!

so: do not reseearch an expensive tech at the start or do it at minimum science.

Now, for one of my own:

How did this happen? I took this city from the Greeks, and I've got culture???

Obviously, this isn't a Greek city to begin with. Could I 'inherit' culture from the Iroquois? I don't think so. . . .

It would make sense if this was the case. But I had alot more than 2 beakers after a while, and it still took 40 turns to research. It made no difference whether I had 8 beakers or 1.

you owned it before, the culture you HAVE is stored forever.

So if I've got a city with 20k culture, and I loose it due to war, and get it back, I get my 20k back? Cool. . .

This leads me to another question. . . in my hypothetical situation above, if I've got a city with 20k, loose it, Do I lose that much culture from my total? And then get it back? Or do I just lose what it produces each turn?

well, you might need more to make a difference. Writing is very expensive, especailly if you do not know any civ that already knows it.

@el_kalkylus:

Try using TechCalc (written by Grey Fox). It tells you exactly how many beakers a tech costs...

Killer, you should post a link to the previous newbie thread in the beggining of this thread. Newbies won't know of the old thread unless you tell them.
