How can I build a large military? I'm play Chieftain as the French, and whenever I try to build a large military(30-50) units, I use about 10 to defend my cities, BTW. This happens alot, I always end up getting -income! How can I avoid this? It's usually too early for marketplaces and banks, should I wait until I can build them?

Hello Karlisna, I quote from the F.A.Q.:

I am pathetic - what do i have to do to win?

Expand, expand, expand!

Trade, trade, trade

Be sure not to throw money out the window by researching expensive techs

Be trustworthy (keep your deals) - makes trading alot better.

I think you have to build more cities and, at least in the beginning, less military units. If you want to wipe out your opponent on chieftain level, in the stone age, I think 10 good units will do. Read yourself through the articles in the war academy.

Good luck!

Personally, I only put one defensive unit in each city, except for cities that border another civ, then I put two. The AI rarely wanders deep into your territory to attack your cities. Usually any units they send in deep are defensive units for pillaging purposes. I'd leave my internal cities empty if the AI wasn't specifically coded to go straight for empty cities even if they shouldn't have even known they were empty.

And yeah like Shabbaman said you only need about 10 offensive units in the ancient age to take enemy cities. You'll lose some in the attack but you can replace em before going to the next city. Usually while attacking you should have a couple cities producing offensive units to continually replenish the dead. But at any one time you only need about 10-15.

Hmmm, I read it as if he used 10 defenders for all his cities... 10 per city doesn't make any sense in the world.

CB:

I am shocked you think we disagree so much. I can assure you it is a one-sided disagreement, as I agree with most of what you say :)

How is it that I have no science placed in my metre but develop new technologies?

I'm not really complaining about this bonus' but it only happens in some of my games and not the others.

Little help here.

Thx:crazyeye:

I'm playing the Koreans (Scientific, Commercial) and got a golden age when building Universal Suffrage. Is this normal ? I thought US could trigger GA for militaristic civ's only ?

Did you capture any of the Wonders that could trigger a Korean GA? If you have, then the next Great Wonder you build, will trigger it.

Say you have built Smiths (Commercial) and then capture TOE (Scientific). Now you have Wonders for a GA, but you didn't build the one, so you don't trigger a GA. But you now build US, and voila! a Golden Age for your Civ.

Hello again! Anyway, what are the requirements for upgrading your units? I'm playing as Scandinavia, and I have a bunch of outdated units, and I can't upgrade any of them, they're all spearmen and archers with a few swordsmen thrown in. I have the required techs and everything.

Well, you need to have a barracks in each city that you want to upgrade units in.

a barracks and the gold to do it, and the resources too... thats what you need to upgrade

I noticed on SOTD #108 there are smilelys under each person in the city and letters by the resources. Is this a mod pack and do you know which on it is? Can you use these in the GOTM or Tournament?
