In Civ III like Civ II the attitude of AI rulers is easily accessible from the Foreign Advisor. In Civ II there was also a measure of Reputation on a scale of 0 to 7 only partly related to the Attitude scale, that the Foreign Advisor was happy to reveal (so long as she was not squabbling with that oaf the Military Advisor). A black mark could be expunged by 24 turns of good behaviour (multiplied by the difficulty level).
According to the manual, page 137, there is a Reputation scale in Civ III, but the new Foreign Advisor will not tell me about it. Am I missing something? Is the only way to find out to have an election to the UN and undergo some schoolboy insults?

There is no real way to measure your reputation. The only way you can really tell how good/bad it is, is either (like you said) by taking the UN election thingie, or seing how willing/unwilling civs are to making gold per turn deals with you. Try to avoid breaking deals, and having ruthless wars(ie razing cities), and declaring war on the AI when you are inside their territory to keep your reputation up.

Hope it helps :)

Pretty much. Although from things I've heard here and there the UN election depends more on attitude than on reputation. Apparently no one will vote for you whose current attitude toward you is worse than 'cautious'. (Or maybe 'polite'? Can't remember.) In any case, Bamspeedy did a recent study of things that affect AI attitude; I'll go look up the link.

edit: I can't: the search function has been disabled. Look up to five or ten pages back in this forum and in Strategies and Tips for threads started by Bamspeedy. I know it's there somewhere.

"So I only have to capture the capital citie's then?"

You have to capture them, but unless you put/keep a unit on them then it wont count. So once you have captured all of the cities make sure that you have a unit on every Vpl. You will win if you do this.

Hope that clarify's things :)

I made a trade deal with another civ. When we made the deal it said at the bottom it would last for 20 turns. On the following turn, when I looked in Active, it showed the number of turns left (19) on the AI side of the screen, but next to the item I was exporting it did not show a number. Is this usual? Will my side of the deal still expire in 20 turns, and if so, how can I tell which of my deals expire at what turn?
Thanks

The turns left should be there. Just scroll down. You might be looking at another deal.

If you could supply a screen shot, someone might be able to point out what is wrong.

The entire deal expires at once, yes, even though the number doesn't appear on every line. With the Active trade thing it is a little hard sometimes to figure out what goes with what if you have multiple deals going. Sometimes you can hover your mouse over the deal and see which things are highlighted, but I forget if that only works with deals which are past 20 turns or not. With PTW, there is a new tab on the F4 foreign advisor screen for "Details" which if you choose that and click on a single opponent will also show you all active deals with that opponent. That screen is formatted a little friendlier.

if you have several deals like that, it'll look like:

ROP(19) --- ROP(19)
1gpt
MPP(17) --- MPP(17)
2gpt
35gpt(11)---- <blank*>

(blank* was a traded tech)

You should be able to identify each agreement, as lines on that table don't get mixed. In this example, the 1gpt payment belongs to the ROP, so it will expire in 19 turns.

If I wanted to use the images from Civilization: Test of Time in PTW, how would I do that? I'm also interested in using some of the graphic mods, and maps as well.

The tech tree is not that bad for just checking for a few optional techs. Once you know where they are it takes a few seconds.

Despotism - Free
Monarchy - Ancient Age
Republic - Ancient Age
Democracy - Middle Age

Hey, I just bought Civ III and was loving it, until I noticed something very confusing...

I went to my domestic advisor and noticed I had 0 gold in my treasury and was loosing 18 gold per turn. I ended my turn and checked again, and the state of my treasury remained the same. As far as I can tell, there is no disadvantage to this, other than not having gold available to use. Even more strangely, I went to my military advisor, who informed me that I can't support any more troops until I get more gold, but I had no problem doing so. Is there something going on here that I just haven't noticed? Forgive me if this is a stupid question- I've never played a Civilization game before.

No, you can't have negative gold, but with 0 gold you can't make any deals with other civs, so you would be at a disadvantage during negotiations.

Welcome to the forum, JoShmo.

That does sound strange. I guess it has to do with difficulty. You should have lost some improvements and/or troops if you go into the red.

I didn't see anything in the civlopedia or the FAQ.

Zagnut's thread is a good place to read before you go too far. It can be like drinking out of a fire hydrant, but most people are happy to help.

If you want to get to the bottom of it then tell us more about your setup - Operating System, game version, difficulty level, mods, etc.
