BOTM 176: Stalin of Russia.

State Property vs Free Market. Stalin of Russia starts with Communism and State Property Civic. The other civilizations start with Economics and Free Market.
Mahalo to our guest mapmaker, Pangaea.
Emperor difficulty, but other civs start with Monarch units. Barbarians start with Hunting and Archery.

Spoiler Apologies :
Sorry I'm late. :mischief:

Pangaea created the game long ago but I didn't get it posted before leaving on vacation.

In the picture you see Stalin enjoying a swim under a waterfall on the road to Hana.

Software Versions

Windows: This game MUST be played in Beyond the Sword (NOT Civ4 Vanilla or Warlords), patched to version 3.19, and with the BUFFY mod version 3.19.005 installed. You can download the BUFFY mod here. Players using Windows Vista or Windows 7 are encouraged to read the notes on Vista fixes here.

While playing...

Remember - for your entry to be accepted, it MUST be your first attempt to play this game, and you MUST NOT replay any turns. If you make a mistake while playing, you have to live with it, learn from it, and carry on the game without replaying.

We will open 'spoiler' threads during the month for players to discuss what happens in their games. Do not discuss any details of your game outside those threads.

Looks fun. Curious, not sure if you tested this, but does the fact that you gave the AIs Economics eliminate the free Great Merchant, or does it essentially mean that the human player is the only one who can get it.

Appears to be a Flat map. Settle on the nanners was my first instinct here, but we are at the edge of the map.

Some Kremlin boosted whipping would be nice too..but that wonder will be expensive if we don't find stone.

Settle 1NE I think, to get the riverside while keeping all the resources.

And we can build super-productive watermills and workshops. Oh hang on, no we can't. Not till we've done a lot of research :-)

State property will be cool for expanding without limits though!

I think that settle on the bananas is the way to go w/o more info.
Scout up on either hill, to make a call of what you leave behind or what you stand to gain. (Probably east, since the odds are stacked against SIP anyway.)

Not at all sure how to think or play with state property already researched, have to think about that.
Probably need at least caste to make workshops worthwhile.

Since we are IND, perhaps some oracle -> MC ideas could make sense? Cheper oracle, gains access to the half-price forges (with silver for extra happines). And opens up the line toward watermills/guilds/workshops.

Yep, settle on nanners is my first instinct here. Which means I’m likely to move scout W on hill.

One thing to consider is the increase in production in all cities.

Oh..forgot...again, one must remember that we are at the edge of the map. At least it is something to consider when moving E to settle as it cuts off a chunk of the BFC. Although it still may be worth doing for the bonus.

Could be a Great Plains map. Don't think it is Highlands, but maybe Lakes.

Pangaea playtested the map. I did not. My speculation would be the same: human player gets the Great Merchant. Easy enough to test with worldbuilder.

(they have no worker on regular Emp games as well)
oopsies (as usual) I was confused, too much sun. Can you point me to a post/summary of what the AIs get at each level?
Spoiler Warlords :
Barbarians get same techs in each version I think. The post I reference for setting the barbarian techs also has AI starting units. But it is for Warlords and AIs even get workers in Monarch there.
For Warlords
Deity

Barb techs: Wheel, Agriculture, Hunting, Archery
AI start units: 2 settlers, 2 workers, 2 scouts, 4 archers (no difference between Hunting/NoHunting leaders)

Immortal
Barb techs: Agriculture, Hunting, Archery
AI start units: 1 settler, 2 workers, 2 scouts, 3 archers (no difference between Hunting/NoHunting leaders)

Emperor
Barb techs: Hunting, Archery
AI start units: 1 settler, 1 worker, 2 scouts, 2 archers (no difference between Hunting/NoHunting leaders)

Monarch
Barb techs: Archery
AI start units: 1 settler, 1 worker, 2 archers / 1 settler, 1 worker, 1 scout, 1 archer

Prince
Barb techs: None
AI start units: 1 settler, 2 warriors / 1 settler, 2 scouts

Noble
Barb techs: None
AI start units: 1 settler, 1 warrior / 1 settler, 1 scout
In this game, AIs have BtS Monarch starting units

Yup, in BTS they get..

Deity
4 archers, 2 scouts, 1 worker, 2 settlers
AIs start with their Civ techs, Agri, Wheel, Hunting & Archery (no mining)
Barbs start with Hunting, Archery, Wheel & Agri

Immortal

3 archers, 2 scouts, 1 worker, 1 settler
AIs start with their Civ techs, Agri, Hunting & Archery
Barbs start with Hunting, Archery & Agri

Emperor
2 archers, 2 scouts, 1 settler
AIs start with their Civ techs, Hunting & Archery
Barbs start with Hunting & Archery

Monarch
2 archers, 1 settler
AIs start with their Civ techs & Archery
Barbs start with Archery

Prince
1 warrior or scout (depending on starting techs), 1 settler
AIs start with their Civ techs only
Barbs get nothing from now on

Noble same as Prince
(i checked all those manually)

Once again a game where I'd rather kill the murderous dictator  than play as it. Maybe I'll play the game as Arya Stark who has taken the face of said mass murderer after a sufficiently painful assasination:backstab:.
At least the current Stalin-worshipper :satan: lost the hockey world championship games with a stinking bronze for his team. Choke on that Putler!:snowlaugh::nya::lmao:
I might SIP unless something better is revealed. Must scout first. There should be a special unit as a barbarian surprise: the giant Mörkö :bday:, leading a team of lions making life difficult for the barbaric Russia.

@lymond just to make sure, you can tell it's the edge of the map from the overview map in the right bottom corner, right? :) and there is no more tiles behind 2E, right?

@High King J.J. we wanted the "stinking bronze" :undecide: been waiting for a medal since 2012

Yes, I think so, you can also see it kind of clearly on the hill visible SE of the banana.
Kind of annoying to move toward the edge of the map like that, but settling on the banana and get a 3F city center is still very tempting.

Could this be rainforest perhaps? We have a jungle resource in bfc, but I fogspy no jungle anywhere.

If it is rainforest the Kremlin would be a waste of :hammers: because you'll be chopping, not whipping. Police State paired with forges and 10% from Communism means each forest (city works 2h) provides 51 :hammers: for 1t HA or Catas. That, in conjunction with no city maintenance should be more than enough to clear the map quick enough.

Police State requires Pyramids (or Fascism).

Note, Mac save isn't available yet. I only gave AlanH one day to build it. So, if you are a mac user, please be patient.

Congrats on the bronze medal.:hatsoff: No disrespect intended except to Putler. (You can report me for a GRU assasination using polonium, nerve gas or whatever Putin fancies this time.)

@High King J.J. my previous message was probably confusing :crazyeye: :) I'm from the Czech Republic, we wanted the "stinking bronze" real bad as there's been no medal for our team since 2012, but we lost it to Russia in the shootout

....and to be more clear this time, I'm also not too much thrilled by having to play for Stalin....
