News: COTM 95 Results and congratulations

Thank you Più Freddo, I agree with everything, but in the GOTM 95, the AI goes to Philosophy before me and I find myself going to Code of Law and Republic without having any Spearman, War Chariot, Archer nor Granary... Gulp!

If you go for Pottery first, you'll finish Philosophy faster than if you go for Philosophy right away...
One military tech can then usually be traded from the AI, e.g. Wheel for Writing (or if lucky even Wheel for Alphabet - depends on how fast you can get contact to many AIs).

Of course "luck" plays a role in this game, too.

Ok, I note the turning by Pottery. It makes sense.

I retried the GOTM 95 but by 650 AD, I'm still far from you results :
- I'm still alive, good point, not that easy,
- I'm still willing to continue, not that easy too,
- I almost crushed the Babylonians, but I'm blocked facing the 4 last cities. It's very hard to destroy the fortified Musketmen in metros with my Swordmen.
- Every other AI have Riflemen and probably Cavalry outsite...
- And everything with the fact that I knew in advance where the Iron where and I founded quickly my second city right there...

I finally went to Monarchy before Republic and when I switched to the latest I discovered that it was a trap: I received more money from my cities, fine, 202 to 272, but with all the burden to maintain population in good mood and paying the army, my Science passed from 37 to 28 and my tax collection from 14 to 9...

Shortly, I had a efficiency (Science+Treasure)/Cities of 25% in Monarchy and it descended to 14% in Republic...

I do think I lost some time dealing with Barbs, I lost some lone warriors too easily, I was obliged to interrupt some Settler production in hurry. Next time, I will pack my warriors by two in order to be sure to crush the Barbs each time.

I dont think going for the iron with your second city is necessarily a good thing here. It delays your growth in the early going by spending unecessary moves on the setller and since there are horses to be had easily, you can conquer babylon without iron.

I prefer horses to swordsmen. They're not as strong, but they run faster, and sometimes retreat to fight another day, rather than dying. And they upgrade to knights and cavalry.

Not enough cities (size-7 and up) and not enough roads? Usually Republic is vastly superior to Monarchy, even for military games. (You'll notice that Neo, templar and myself all used Republic in this game. Don't waste any effort researching Monarchy, it sucks... You'll probably need more experience handling Republic properly.)

I agree with everything you said and it looks that the difference between winning and loosing lies in the way you deal with theses details, the way you optimize them.

Having tried one more time to start the GOTM 95, I faced the wall one more time and it's sunny outside and I have some real life things o do! ;-)

But I keep your advice in my head for the next one!

My daughter hopes the next GOTM will be with Ottoman (or the Persian). She is trying her first GOTM with the 96.
