I'll settle in place or on furs

Settling on Furs/Grassland makes little sense. The extra shield disappears, and the extra commerce too, in the capital. You also lose a valuable (Archipelago/80%/south pole) food-rich tile. The Furs Forest must be chopped, mined and roaded for at premium 2-2-2 tile and 10 early, extra shields from the chop to boot.

If the Furs would have been on Plains, it would have been another matter. Then you would have two shields per turn in the capital if it was founded on top of the Furs.

Do I need to download a patch if I have Civ3 Complete?

No. Complete is complete.

Technically it could be a bg fur, in which case the bonus shield would hsow up in the capital. But that's hardly worth gambling on.

@Più: did I see you in today's birthday honours?

The Complete edition has this software version already on the CD. It is a box with Civ I, Civ II, Civ III, Civ IV and a Civ card Game.

Silversheep has Civ3 Complete (Civ3 vanilla, PTW and Conquests), not the Complete Edition.

And as Più Freddo said, you don't need a patch for CIV3 Complete just be sure to start the Civ3Conquests.exe, in the conquests directory. IIRC, the play button launches the CIV3 vanilla exe file.

Hmm... maybe a bit late to post here... although I read through everything sorry if posting here is against the rules or anything. Anyway, I recently got c3c so I might try a GOTM. Or COTM, what is exactly the difference?

I think I'd move my worker to the tundra forest 1SW and hope it's on the coast so I can settle there, if not I'll settle in place. However, there seem to be hills in the S - SW, so I might also move the worker south, and if that's coastal, I think that's a better place than settling SW.

I'll play the conquest-class as I'm usually playing on Regent. The only award I could possibly get is for the lowest-score defeat I think :D

Simply, for a COTM we play in C3C, and for a GOTM we play in Play The World.
The game released at the start of the month is always COTM, and the game released in the middle of the month is always GOTM.

Ah, like that. Thanks for clarifying that :)

But then again... why don't they call a PTW GOTM a POTM... :hmm:
