GOTM 134: Elizabeth of England.

After a long break from Civ4, I rediscovered it a few weeks back and after playing all the xOTM games available the next logical step is for me to create a game.

It's been a long while since we had a good old classic 'Vanilla' game.... you know the ones... with no unique buildings, bugger all resources and no corporations. But, the CS sling is significantly easier and CATS CAN KILL so its swings and roundabouts.

I wanted to choose a decent leader, but one that allowed for whatever VC you desired, Lizzie is a good, strong Vanilla leader so therefore perfect. Emperor is the same.... hard enough to interest the purists, not so hard as the scare away everyone else.

Game settings:
Playing as: Elizabeth of England
Rivals: 6 AIs
Difficulty: Emperor
Starting Era:
Ancient
Speed: Normal
Options: None. All goody huts removed, no barb techs!
Victory Conditions:
All enabled

Map settings:
Map: Lakes
World Wrap: Cylindrical
Mapsize: Worldsize_standard
Climate: Climate_temperate
Sea level: Sealevel_medium

Elizabeth is Philosophical and Financial, and you start with Fishing and Mining.
The Philosophical trait gives +100% great people birth rate and double production speed of University

The Financial trait gives +1 commerce on any plot that already has at least 2 commerce

Unique unit: Redcoat (replaces Rifleman)
The Redcoat benefits from: 25% combat bonus against mounted units, 25% combat bonus against gun units. This compares with the Rifleman which has: 25% combat bonus against mounted units.

To Enter the Competition:

This competition will open at 00:01 am on 15 Sep 2019, server local time (UTC-6:00). From that date and time, you'll be able to get your chosen starting save >>>here<<<.

Submit the save after your victory (or defeat) here, by 31 Oct 2019.

Here is a link to a list of the differences between Vanilla, Warlords and BtS.

Software Versions

Windows: This game MUST be played in Civ4 Vanilla (NOT Beyond the Sword or Warlords), patched to version 1.74, and with the HOF mod version 1.74.004 installed. You can download the HOF mod here. Players using Windows Vista or Windows 7 are encouraged to read the notes on Vista fixes here.

If you have not installed BtS, you will need to update the relevant DLL files in order to match the Locked Assets checks. These are available here.**

Macintosh: This game MUST be played in Civ4 Vanilla (NOT Beyond the Sword or Warlords), patched to version 1.74, and with the Mac HOF mod version 1.74.002 installed. You can download the Mac HOF mod here.
While playing...

Remember - for your entry to be accepted, it MUST be your first attempt to play this game, and you MUST NOT replay any turns. If you make a mistake while playing, you have to live with it, learn from it, and carry on the game without replaying.

We will open 'spoiler' threads during the month for players to discuss what happens in their games. Do not discuss any details of your game outside those threads.

Leader starts with the right techs? Check.
Fast teching out of the box? Check.

Looks like a game for very fast conquest or early reaching the domination limit.

Unfortunately, I no longer have CIV vanilla...

THANKS Neil.

Spoiler stay tuned for more gotm games :
I had planned to create a gotm 134 - but not until after I posted results from 179 and created botm 184. Glad I'm late. ;)
I will do 135, to start sometime in November. Planning to make it so I can play: won't look at map and will let everyone know everything I know (the AI leaders).

Settle 1S?

Just make the leaders random as well.... but, you will need to create the WB save.... which will be interesting if you dont want to see the map.

Not to late to start - I haven't yet. (But I will).

I got the Steam versions a few months ago because I couldn't find my disc anymore. I successfully got through setting up BtS, but vanilla is giving me trouble. I got all the way through loading the Mod without warnings, but when I try to open the game file, I get this:
upload_2019-10-3_21-52-49.png

and then "Load Failed".
Any ideas?

- install from steam the BETA of Vanilla. On the Steam library you can right click on a game, select 'Properties' and then choose the original game from the BETAS tab.
- go to where the steam.exe is located (c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe) and change its properties to 'run as admin'. This will make steam display a warning screen when you next run it, but ignore it
- Download the attached zip in this post
- Unzip it and copy the files to the steam Vanilla assets folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV\Assets)... overwrite existing files (if you dont get a warning, you are not copying it to the correct place)
- change properties of all files under C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV to not be read only (see the HoF Win7/Vista page for details http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/mod.php?show=vista)

Thanks, neil!

The download of the Assets folder was the last piece I needed. Now let's see if I remember how to play.
