GOTM139 Persia - Pre-game discussion

attachment.php

In game number 139 of the classic game of the month series you will rule as King Xerxes over the Persian, which are an industrious and scientific tribe starting the game with the knowledge of Bronze Working and Masonry.

This is a Monarch level game and this month we are sponsoring a 20K cultural victory. This means that only games completed to this victory condition will be eligible for medals and other awards. As always however, you can lose by whichever method you like and still be eligible for an ambulance. The Persian unique unit is the Immeortal, which replaces the Swordsman and has a larger attack value than that unit, making it the best attacker for quite a long time, surpassed only with the advent of Cavalry!

This game continues to use a modified form of the standard PTW scenario, and although no bugs have been reported in some time, it is possible that play testing has not been exhaustive. Any in-game event or behaviour that a player feels is unintended should be reported to the GOTM staff immediately.

Here is your start position.

I can see Coast (W, W, SW), (E, E) and (E, SE). It's a narrow landmass. Hills are of course ideal for 20k, but Capital on Luxury is not. SE would be a possible 20k spot on the Coast, but unsuitable for a Capital. I think I will move the Settler NW and chop the Silk Forest at once (into a Barracks-based pre-build, presumably). It would still be possible to use the Coast location for a second town doing 20k or perhaps use the Capital at (NW) or (NW, NW).

20K is the same on every map. (After all, it's just one single city, and the size of the map has no (direct) influence on the productivity of one city...)

By the way: now that I think of it, I think that even 100K is the same on every map in Vanilla/PtW?! Didn't they change the 100K limits only with C3C?

I see in Republic size 12 city is productin 20spt (if I'm correct). Which is nice round number. I may settle NW. As I think there is wines resources behind fog. Also we don't need as many hills before a hospital and railroads. At that point we can't do much to our finish date.

Why is that? Are you thinking about some connect-disconnect tricks like in Sid-games?!

No, I don't play Sid games. I only meant that most of the commercial bonus of the Luxury is lost. Not directly relevant for 20k in particular, just a general rule.

a commerce ressource bonus *does not* get lost if you settle on the ressource. only a food bonus does.

Not completely. But you often get more commerce from it if it is located outside the capital centre tile. This is especially true of high-commerce bonuses like Gold. Maybe Silk has too little commercial bonus to make a difference. But there are other reasons to move the Settler NW as well.

it appears to be like that, but what you see actually is the despotism penalty in action... once a Republic or whatever, you get all the commerce from the tile. at least this is how i am really sure that it works. ;)

@Lanzelot: Perhaps you could revert to posting the save directly in this thread, since the site appears to be staying down for some time still?

Interesting start. Coast or desert, that is the question :)

At a first glance, the area westward of the spot seems a decent location for a 20k city, supposing there is a coast there. I'll probably venture N, hoping to find some other food bonuses, and eventually settle in that area. The idea is to build city 2 at RCP 3 or 4 from the capital, on a coastal spot, and use it as my 20k city.

It doesn't matter if the location is food-rich or not, as long as there is a food-rich location somewhere else that can pump the 20k city with some workers.

This game is now set up on the resuscitated GOTM server. You should be able to download the save here, and submit your final saves in the usual way.
