Barbarians: Roaming
Difficulty: Emperor
Land Form: Pangaea, 60% ocean, Small map.

Not a bad start.

I'll send the scout NW-NW, the extra warrior S and the worker to the BG. If nothing better shows up (like a double cow), I settler Moscow in place.

First build will likely be a scout unless early exploration hints towards small island. (I know it's a pangaea, but sometimes the mods like to mess with us)Extra warrior will scout a bit then return to allow Moscow to get to size 2 without any lux tax. Worker will mine & road BG then move to connect furs before Moscow reaches size 3. If there's a settler factory spot nearby, I'll try to time the growth with a settler completion.

Research is the tough choice: I'll probably go The Wheel to find out where the horses are and then Iron Working to find that resource. After that I'll head for Republic. Since I'm likely to be able to contact most of the tribes without using a boat (unlike GOTM68), I'll probably end up trading for Map Making.

Mostly agree with denyd. Only thing I would do differently is prioritising the game. It's the only tile in sight that could give more then 2 food. First move worker S. Besides S are the only tiles in the fat cross that we can't see.

Warrior W walking the nearby hilltops; scout 2NW. As we are probably near the NE corner of the pangaea, a counter-clockwise sweep of the area by the scout could be a good idea.

Research for the wheel. Not only for reasons denyd mentioned, but also does it make excellent trading stuff. On a small map pangaea we could meet many neighbours quickly with the scout(s).

Space could be an appropriate VC: in civ the Russians are scientific and in rl they were the first in space.

Small pangaea, I was thinking about barracks first while researching warrrior code, but this is annoying:

Predator-Class Challenges:

2. AI's start with 2 Bonus Pikemen Each

Hmm....

I did a Space Race Victory last time....as a last ditch effort after not being able to get a Cultural Victory.:(

I am not sure which way to go on this one. Anyone have any thoughts?

I hate playing the game always at war and always building units, so perhaps a diplomatic victory. I'll keep my nose clean and just hope for the best.

I like both ideas for the first moves, now to decide which way to go. Certainly going with the warrior being use for MP. I hate playing the percentage game if I don't have to.

Settling S may be good for a RCP 3. It depends to the southern lands. Scout E-S, probably, and warrior NW, are my preferred start moves.

Need save file...withdrawal setting in...already having the shakes and vomiting...please....help...can't hold out much longer.....ugh ugh ugh:D :D :D

Is it possible to play PTW when you only have Civ3 Complete? I guess it is, but how do I do it? Do I need to download anything other than the save?

Anyway, I am going to try this one if I can, at Conquest class. It seems a little bit easier than that demigod cotm, especially since I normally only play Regent... :mischief:

Also, if this is an island, then it'll probably be a damn big one. I see absolutely no sign of the coast in the west yet, but early exploration will confirm that. I might move my scout NW - W onto the hill to check if I see the sea. It looks like there are plains to the south, and some more hills to the far north. Judging from the minimap, the starting location is already far in the north so checking too much to the north will only give lots of tundra. I will use my warrior as early MP and my second scout to explore in the south. Perhaps moving it E - S. I will obviously settle in place, worker E to the bg to mine. First production either a warrior or scout or an early extra worker. Second city maybe on the coast, or further inland.

Because of the difficulty, I don't think I can beat the AI to most of the wonders without any prebuilds. I might just create a palace prebuild somewhere else to build Great Library.

The program is here:

C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Civilization III Complete\civ3PTW\Civilization3X.exe

Start it from there or create a shortcut.

I tried this, but then it asks me for the PTW CD. The package I bought came with three CDs: the Civ III "vanilla" CD, the Conquests CD and a CD with videos and Sid Meier interviews. --- But no PTW CD!!!

Does this mean I can't participate in the GOTMs??

(I hoped so much I would be able to start my very first GOTM this week, especially as I'm going to be on vacation starting next week and my wife and little baby doughter are going to the grandparent's place for a couple of days...)

Any help is welcome!

Use the C3C CD I should think. Certainly I never bought PtW, and it is my C3C which allows me to play PtW.

Oh come. You haven't got a Warrior!

To provide some compensation for removal of most Goody Huts, all Expansionist civs will receive a bonus Warrior and 25 extra gold.

For this game you do have a warrior (unless you're a predator)

Even if you for some reason cannot open up PTW, you can still participate in the still currently active C3C COTM 38. Note that the deadline is a bit early if you're only starting now, 7th of August, but if you just keep playing on and don't stop you'll get there in time easily ;)

Life can be so easy! :)

Well, actually it wasn't that easy, so in case anybody else is running into this, here is what I found out:

First of all I was pretty sure that I had tried both CDs for playing PTW, the vanilla and the Conquests, when I first bought and installed the package. And I remembered that neither one had been accepted by PTW. But as PaperBeetle seemed quite sure of it, I went back last night and tried the Conquest CD again. And guess what? It worked!

I had bought a new PC since I tried it last time, but I still have my old PC. (My brother-in-law and me are using it to play MP games.) So I went back to the old PC and tried it there, and here it didn't work! Then I kept looking for the difference between these two installations until I finally found it: on my original PC right after installing the two CDs, I had installed all three patches from the civ3 hompage: Civ3v129f, civ3ptw127f and civ3conquestsv122full. (I didn't know until yesterday that C3C already contains version 1.27f of PTW.)
On my new PC I hadn't bothered to install civ3ptw127f, as I thought that damn thing doesn't work anyway...

So apparently if you install civ3ptw127f, this changes something in the installation which makes it looking for the original PTW CD. While if you use the PTW installation without any patch as it comes with Conqests, then it accepts the C3C CD!
I verified this by installing civ3ptw127f on my new PC as well. And sure enough: afterwards it no longer accepted the C3C CD either! (I had to uninstall and reinstall everything to get rid of that stupid patch again... )

Hope this is of use to other people as well,
Lanzelot

That's dedication! Good find.
