Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 77
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the Seventy-seventh game in the GOTM V Training Series! There are plenty of features in Civilization 5, Gods & Kings and Brave New World to explore and the Training Series games will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these features in a friendly environment. You are all encouraged to post your questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads described below. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread. Before going into the details of this game, we would like to ask you to abide to our most sacred rule: don’t replay any turns. If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. It's better to do the bad moves in the Training Series instead of in the actual GOTM competition, once it starts.

Please note: If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.

In this game, the designated VC is Science. All VCs are enabled but results will be published by fastest Science victory turn.

In this game you will play as Germany and lead the German Empire to victory. It's a standard-sized mystery map played at Immortal difficulty and at standard pace. Science is the designated VC for this game, all victory conditions are enabled. You will have until February 2nd to complete the game and submit.

For those that do not wish to know the map type, please do not check the spoiler below. However, the broken software will reveal the map type if you mouse over the map icon in the load save screen.

You must have the Brave New World expansion to play this game.

Civ V BNW - TSG77 Game Settings:
Playable Civ: Bismarck - German
Number of AI Opponents: 7
Number of City-States: 16
Map type: Mystery
Spoiler :
Mousing over the map icon in the load save screen, you will see Pangaea

Map Size: Standard
Difficulty Level: Immortal
Game pace: Standard
Game options: Raging Barbs Option was selected for this game. Huts are enabled. Quick Combat and Quick Movement are disabled. (You may turn them on using the game options menu at any time during gameplay.)
Game Version: This game was created in Civ5 Brave New World version 1.0.3.144. Mongols, Brave New World and Gods and Kings are required for this game.

In this game, you will be playing as Bismarck, you possess Furor Teutonicus. Upon defeating a Barbarian unit inside an encampment, there is a 67% chance you earn 25 Gold and they join your side. Pay 25% less for land unit maintenance.

You can train the Panzer, which replaced the Tank. This unit is both faster and stronger than the tank. It can also move after combat, allowing it to blow huge holes in enemy lines and then barrel through before the enemy can repair the gap. The Panzer is available upon the discovery of the Combined Arms technology and you do must have the oil resource to build them.

You can build the Hanse, which replaces the Bank. The Hanse provides the same abilities as the Bank and adds production (hammers) for each trade route within your civilization that connects to a City-State. The trade routes can come from any combination of cities, even cities without the Hanse (for example: If you have trade routes from Berlin to Geneva, Munich to Geneva, Munich to Berlin and Berlin to Brussels, then all cities with the Hanse would get +15% production.) You need to discover the technology of Banking, you must have a Market built in the city and you do not need a resource to build it.

This is where you will start:

Information about threads associated with TSG
TSG Announcement thread (this one). This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don’t post any information from a game you have started. Instead use the next thread.

Opening Actions thread. This thread is used to discuss the game once it's on the way. There are no reading or posting restrictions as such (apart from normal decency), although we encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. During the time the game is active, please do not post any information concerning the game outside of the spoiler threads including screen shots and videos.

After Action Report thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state (preferably in the post title) your victory date and score, as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory! , We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the two week period (sorted by date and score). Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after two weeks, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
We now have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note, you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.

This game runs for a month and ends Sunday, 2 February 2014.

The Save can be found here.

I'll probably use my warrior to head NW to the hill to see if there are any better settling spots. Otherwise, I'll probably settle on the gems. Haven't really played as Germany before (pre or post the patch), so should be interesting. Want to try and make the most of Furor Teutonicus.

Attempting to join this but cannot load the game within Civ5. I clicked on the link to download the save and copied it to my Civilization5/Saves/Single file right next to all of my other single player saves but when I load Civ5 and go to single player load game it is not there. Am I doing something wrong or is there another way?

You need to have Civ5 vanilla, Gods & Kings, Brave New World and the free Mongolia expansion pack to play the game.

Yea, I own everything available for Civ5. Doesn't make any sense why the downloaded save is not working. I've done similar things with no problems. It shows up in my Civ5 save folder with all my other saves but is not there when I go to single player- load game. Oh, well, maybe next month... I only spend so much time on games & not gonna waste anymore unless somebody just happened to have the same problem and fixed it. Doesn't make any sense to me:crazyeye: Tried erasing, redownloading, rebooting, loading again... nonsense

Beyond my comfort level, but I'll give it a shot. Do the experts think opening honor may be justified here, between Germany and Raging barbs? Are any of the further honor policies worth the cost?

Sorry you are having a problem. Do not know why it is happening as it has never happened to me before. Perhaps someone else will have had the experience and can assist you?

Yeah, I think I'm gonna try opening with Honor here. Hopefully it will make up for itself in dead barbarians and help me rocket through tradition. Hm....how many barb kills would it take to make it worth it?

Infinite. Always look at this, how many barbs would you need to kill for the last social policy you need in the game?

Let's do a count: 2000 / 8 = around 250? :)

I figured it out. I copied the file into documents/mygames/civ5/saves/single instead of steam/steamapps/common/civ5/saves/single and it worked fine. Cool!

I don't think it is quite that simple, though. I mean, many times I have time for more policies than I really need in a game at the end. For Science, I really just need to finish Rationalism and reach the third tier of Order. Most times I have a couple policies to spare.

Early culture counts for more. Like grabbing an ancient culture ruins can jump start you, even though 20 culture is a drop in the bucket compared to what you need for a policy later in the game. So to me it is more a question of
1. Will it help me get through tradition faster and get those aqueducts rolling? (let's assume straight tradition here)
and
2. Will it help or hurt timing opening rationalism?

I'm not really sure about question two. It would require some experimentation. But lets say with raging barbs on you kill 15 barbs in the first 80 turns at an average of 8 culture per kill. That's 120 culture. Assuming four cities and looking at this chart http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=446603 and making some guesses about when the extra cities are dropped, the policy costs might be something like 25, 30, 60, 120, 250, 370, 515. So if you opened with honor, the final policy in tradition would cost 515 culture instead of 370, a difference of 145, more than I think you could expect from killing barbs.

Of course you may get your free monument a little quicker depending on barb kills, and possibly get to the extra food and/or extra happiness and money a little quicker which also may have an effect. Probably minimal though.

So if my logic is correct here (a big if I think), you are right and it is not worth it. To make it worth it, I think it would have to help you finish tradition substantially faster, and I don't think that is the case unless you could kill 20+ barbs early which I think is unrealistic even with raging barbs on.

Anyone else care to chime in?

Love your youtube vids btw Yoruus. Also my wife wants to see your cat again.

...and do not forget it is not just economic math...barbs are an annoying threat at immortal level and honor helps you to handle that a little bit easier, probably you get more units earlier, can scout better, perhaps you can conquer even a second city, perhaps you also get City-states-friendships earlier, and so more culture, more food, more happiness.

Oh, so many options...culture for Jungle, Colossus, Terracotta army, Trade routes with science...I hope I survive my high spirits ;)

do not forget that you have unit-limit ;)

Someone mentioned the beaker-overflow exploit; how does this factor in to GotM rules?

on immortal raging barbs Setting u can easily kill 1 barb a turn with camp Camping, even more isnt totaly unrealistic but then it start draging onto resources

We are looking at it. Do not think it was the intent of the developers to create such a situation, so please avoid using the technique in GoTM.

I'll scout NW with the worker to see what else there is, but will probably settle in place. Moving down to the gems would remove two good food resources from my inner ring, and I'd have to wait to claim them. jungled gems, on the other hand, are a decent 2f/2g tile till you get the requisite techs.
Open tradition, open honor, fill tradition, probably. Based on the above math, with only three cities, it should be possible to keep up culturewise, and in the meantime, you take out the barbs faster for more units faster, as well as taking them out before they can pillage too many of your tiles.
I may experiment with order science to see if the +25% from the factor can outweigh the +5% cost for the extra cities. Make a second warrior early and go a-conquering.

Note: I learned the hard way in a previous game that Furor Teutonicus is misleadingly worded. You get the unit when you clear the camp, not when you defeat the unit. You can farm units with archers all day, then move one into an empty camp and get a brute. If you take out the camp and the unit at the same time with a melee unit, you get a copy of whatever unit you just killed.

Still don't think that makes it worth opening Honor for a designed victory of Science. You'll get enough extra culture out of it to make up for the opener, but will you get enough extra to make it worthwhile in the end? Raging barbs tends to really hamper the AI. They lose settlers, etc. which will result in less valuable RA, prevent them from making tile improvements, which will reduce their cash/luxes for trade, caravans will get eaten.

For Domination, sure, but for Science?

What happens if you settle on a camp (beside it) with your starting settler?
Did you have a chance for a brute? Where would it appear?
