My DS still hasn't arrived yet, although I have played quite a bit of my friend's. Unsuprisingly, my impressions on the system is extremely positive.
First off, the system is light. I mean, really light. Supporting the system with one hand while using the stylus with the other was a lot easier than I suspected.
The big DS launch title is Super Mario 64 DS. The original released almost ten years ago was absolutely revolutionary. The game introduced using an analogue control stick for the first time. The major problem with the DS having the remake as its big launch title is that there is no analogue control stick, to keep the clamshell design of the DS.
The game attempted to recreate the analogue feel in several ways. The d-pad, with holding down a button to run, just isn't so great. What you use is the thumb strap on the touch screen as a virtual analogue stick. It's annoying how as I move my thumb I keep hitting the side of the screen, having to lift my finger and recenter it, often delaying me some time, it works pretty well.
Control issues aside, Super Mario 64 DS is absolutely amazing. I mean, this is Super Mario 64 for crying out loud. I did play a bit of multiplayer, and it was very fun. The stylus-oriented minigames are also quite entertaining.
Pictochat I tried a bit, it will be more fun when more of my friends get a DS. This system has a lot of potential in the classroom, particularly the boring ones.
Unfortunately, my friend forgot to bring the Metroid Prime Hunters demo to school, so I didn't get a chance to play that yet.
As for the future of the system, most of the launch titles don't look all that great. Feel the Magic XX/XY seems too short, and the other launch titles seem a bit mediocre. But to be honest, Super Mario 64 by itself can last me quite a while, until next year when the big games start getting released, with everything from Mario Kart to Harvest Moon to Final Fantasy III all for the DS.
