NO-1: Tree huggers of the world unite

Nice job on liberalism guys :goodjob: I'll look over the save and comment before I play. I'm inclined to take the suggested trade with Wang. I don't like helping him, but we aren't competing directly. I think we need to think about attacking Ramesses soon.

Ok, I'm going to make the trade with Wang research Economics and switch to Free Market, Religion. I'm going to steal up to lit, and build the epic in Amsterdam.

I had hoped to get the Taj but Ramesses has just started and I don't think we can beat him without sabotage, I think that's a bad use of our energy. The culture trouble in the south is annoying, looks like both of his eastern cities popped borders since my last set. It looks like a much easier war now than vs Charlie and Nap, but that will change as he gets the next set of military techs.

So I think it's pretty clear he's our next target. I'm going to start improving our army, I'd like to declare in the next turnset.

Actually, Free Religion would screw up our plans for the AP so I won't switch until there is some discussion, and I don't want to wait a couple days to play. Free Market is a no-brainer though.

Sounds good

On the inherited turn I take the suggested deal with Wang and grab Aesthetics and Lit with our spies with no loss.

I fire specialists in Amsterdam for now and build the National Epic there (after completing the mace and spreading Judaism). The Heroic in Uppsala is an obvious choice too, but I delayed it since I want some CR2 trebs quick.

It's embarrassing to call a decision a no-brainer and then change your mind, but that's what I did. I had saved after the first two turns since it was taking forever to adjust everything, and when I came back I decided Economics was a bad choice. Our cities are already saturated with foreign trade (and we'll soon lose Egypt), so Free Market is nice but not worth 2 turns of anarchy as we prepare for war. I switch to Gunpowder and complete it.

Napoleon gets Compass, and I take it and his gold for Paper. I sell Paper to Charlie too. This opens up a slightly better trade with Justinian than was possible before, and I jump on it.

Justinian's map was surprisingly worth something. We may want to research Astro and use our lovely UU to settle a large island/small continent east of us.

We are building universities and also a grocer in Etruscan for the merchant slots. Please please whip these when the pop cost goes down by one. Also Rotterdam, Delft, Nidaros, and Tonsberg are all very good cities to consistently whip.

I turn off research after Gunpowder. I upgrade a couple units with 3 promos, and a few droplets go into Military Tradition. The next player probably wants to make a definite decision here and burn the gold on research. I think we will (or should) take Ramesses' best cities and have him capitulate before Cuirassiers can make an impact.

We are quite ready to declare on the next player's first turn. (but note a couple units on go-to orders may get trapped if you declare before they move) Here is a sketch of a battle plan.

245lr8l.jpg

Our main army has a ton of maces, trebs, and war elephants and will head down to Memphis. We have 3 spies ready there to incite revolt. The Pyramids aren't worth quite so much now that Justinian and Wang will trade Constitution, but MoM is still very nice. The AP is here too, but taking it means we will be up against Justinian for leadership (if we delayed war and spread Judaism to one more city we would likely win leadership in the next vote - I much prefer war now). After Memphis, I think we want to send the majority of that army to Thebes.

The south has a few trebs, cats, and knights, and some more units primarily for defense. There is also a spy in Pi-Ramesses. I think the next player will want to collect a few more horse archers over here on the inherited turn, some are still in Maastricht and the coastal horse cottage city.

In the north by Etruscan we have a chokepoint with forts. I don't have an offensive army here. There are veteran spears on the forts, feel free to upgrade or move a mace from the main army if necessary. I have muskets en route to these forts, but I gathered an offensive army quicker than I expected, so the defense is a little thin now.

Good luck, let's make this a golden age Ramesses will remember ;)

Anyone out there? I think it's Refar's turn now, but if no one claims it today I could extend my set and get the war started.

Two DLs, so Refar knows he's up. ;)

Actually I want to finish this SG ASAP.
The set up for this SG was an initial failure.
I hoped for a tree economy, so we should have used an advanced start.
By the time we can improve the trees this game is probably over.

None of those 2 DL's was by me. But now i know i am up... Went quite fast... Figures as we are just 3 players left, but i somehow did not realized it...

I cant play it before tomorrow, so if Quechua has time, it's fine by me.

Ok I played 5 more turns, I was intending to play a set of this length anyway, but we were at a stopping point.

Obligatory backstab screenshot. I decided to go Military Tradition before Astro (settle overseas, -> Sci Meth for Tatran's forest preserves).

We could very easily buy Justinian as an ally - I declined.

I think we want Ramesses as a friendly vassal, we don't want him losing western cities and getting the diplo hit.

And we don't seem to need any help....

In other news...

-A forest grows near Delft, I pillage the mine. Refar may want to pillage the road as well as the forbidden tiles in our new cities.

-I sell Charlie Compass for 200g, and trade Gunpowder+55g for Economics with Justinian. We get Military Tradition when you press enter.

-The National Epic is complete and we'll get another gp soon. I'd like a MoM golden age , and we can do massive civic switch. Police state or USuff > Representation imo.

-We don't have any more spies in Egypt, we had a close call in Memphis losing 2 of 3. I'm not sure how far our spies are from the front but we may have to take Thebes and Heliopolis the old-fashioned way.

Looks like Charlie got enough on his hands in the last turn or two. Maybe it's best to play it safe and vassalize Ramesses as soon as he's willing, moving our army north. We've accomplished our main goals here I think. No reason to risk a won game.

I would like to take Thebes, before calling our goals accomplished - capital, maybe Ramesses settled a few nice Great Peoles there... stuff like that... But i will look to Vassalize Ramesses fast.

Sounds good, but I'd keep the muskets and other new units up north, the stack in Jelling is pretty scary.

Yes i was thinking keeping the reinforcments in the North too - from the look of it we have enought troops on the Rammesses front.

Played 9 Turns.

Just took Thebes - the advance was a lot harder than i expected. Ramesses kept hitting us with Catapults, causing no actual casualties, but weakening the troops slowing down the advance. Also both Spy's i could bring in sucked at revolting Thebes - one got caught the other was just incometent.

I asked Charlie for a donation on my first turn. He accepted giving us 150 Gold + 10 Turns of "Can Not Declare" - the next turn is safe, it will expire the turn after next.
If he does not declare right away, we could try asking for another donation, further delaying his attack.
charleok5.jpg

I have not sent any newly built troops to egypt, so we do have a few Muskets and Curasiers on charlies boarders. His stack still does look a bit scary.

Got hit by a few spy's (caught many more) i think i rebuilt the destroyed improvements.

The assault on Thebes gave us a Great Genereal (waiting in Haitabu)
generalaj8.jpg

Thebes itself is less nice than i hoped for - "just" two settled Prophets - still NotreDamme is nice to have. Also got Sistina, hopefully pulling Ramesses his Culture teeth. My Vassal winning culture was one of the most embarassing losses i ever had...
The city will be incredible culture pressed, but it can not flip back, we will get the tiles to work on, regardless the culture, if Ramesses is Vassalized and the Wonders are still working, even if it is in revolt, so i think we can live with it, untill we can mount up enought culture there.
thebesot9.jpg

We could take Heliopolis, to ease the Pressure a bit (Ramesses just built Hermitage there i think), but with our army in need of healing and judging from how unpleasant the advance on Thebes was, i expect this to take another ~5+ Turns.
heliss5.jpg

Otherwise Ramesses is willing to capitulate on these terms:
capito0.jpg

I have upgraded a few Curasiers and we have some gold Stockpiled - might be enought to tech Astro - but maybe upgrading a few more troops along Charlies boarder is a better move right now.

We also got the 6 Universities needed for Oxford.
Amsterdam will pop the Great Person next turn - i got one or two turns delay, because i mismanaged the specialist after whipping away some WW-whiners.

I haven't looked at the save but I'm for taking Heliopolis as long as we can hold off an attack from Charlie and Nap long enough to get back on our feet. That way we at least get the Colossus a few turns before it expires ;) Nice move getting 10 turns peace, I wonder if trying that trick with Nap would get us peace with Charlie?

We should probably refocus our espionage off of Ramesses now if you haven't done already.

We should probably interrupt unit builds in Uppsala for the sake of the Heroic Epic soon.

Again I'd like a GA with next gp. I'd like police state (unit prod), although USuff is a good second choice. Let's switch out of OR to either free religion (a tech bonus comparable to our shrine) or theocracy. We should probably build jewish monastary somewhere soon, or at least spread to Utrecht.

Of course biggest priority is making sure we can defend an attack

Anyone disagrees with this civic choice :

Police State + Nationhood + Slavery + Free Market + Theocracy

I'll play somewhere on Monday.

I am a bit in doubt on Free Market vs maybe Mercantilism - we are big, we have a vassal for some foreighn trade in Merc. When Charlie and Naps declare, the list of our foreign trading partners will grow thin, and we will give more to them, than they to us.

After looking deeper at our current situation, I think Representation is much better.
We have +30 specialists. With Mercantilism we can add +20 more.

I'm not sure Astronomy is the right tech to research now.
The Corporation and some military techs have more priority IMHO.

Pre-turn

He and Kon have Democracy + the Corporation.
Research -> Replaceable Parts

Mikhail Lomonosov has been born in Amsterdam.
He will lightbulb a part of Chemistry.

At the start of our Golden Age these are the civic choices :

Another tech has been added.

Ramesses has started to research Astronomy. I suggest we delay his capitulation.

Our peace treaty with Charlie has ended, but he has nothing on his hands.

I don't think the game will end,

Part II

And the outcome :

Ok, Charlie has enough on his hands again and wasn't willing to pay tribute.

Research : we know RP -> Rifling

Let's make a deal,

Napoleon was very gifting during this turn set, 140 gold added to our treasury.

I'm glad I didn't lightbulb Chemistry, Justinian was researching it.

Wang Anshi has been born in Etruscan.
We could save him for Sid's Sushi Co.

Trade Music for Drama with Napoleon. He wouldn't give it for free. Too bad.

Research : we know Rifling

Start to research Steel.

Wang Kon and Justinian have both Scientific Method and are willing to trade.
Despite 2 monasteries which are currently in progress,

We have oil.

Some last comments :

Ramesses has been reduced to 4 cities and Giza is undersiege and should fall soon.
I think it's better he leaves, no vassal -> no motherland whiners.

Amsterdam will generate a great person next turn.
With some luck we can start another golden age.
The city is also busy constructing the Statue of Liberty.

We've 1 turn of our current Golden Age left, so we can change civics without anarchy.

Current civics : Rep + Bur + Ema + Mer + Pac

Charlie still has enough on his hands and hasn't declare on anyone.
As soon as Ramesses is gone we should take care of him.

Were missing the save but I don't have time to look at it now anyway. Will play tomorrow or so. Nice job on Heliopolis, let's vassalize Ramesses now.

I wanted Astronomy to settle the island, meaning we win domination quicker. It is also a prereq for forest preserves (or chemistry) but that's just for 'flavor' now I'm afraid.
