No Coal!

When I discover steam engine I always have at least 2 coal sites.
Maybe because I control 20 - 30% of world by then.
I f you expand early you will never lack of resources.

i swear to you, twice in a row, nowhere on my entire continent. more like 50% of the world, not 30%. coal is the only strategic resource i've ever seen missing entirely on a continent (in a 2 continents-style map). grrrrrrrrrr.

In all games I play, there's oil almost everywhere. Even coal cant be said to be rare. And I play with standard resources... is this because I play Noble/Prince?
Or just because I never play the English?

What map? You forgot to mention the map name.

Me personally, always play at fractal/standard. Never lack of strategic resources. Sometimes in the beginning of the game lack of copper but then archer or chariot rush do the trick if neighboring civ has it. Or use iron.

In that game I am still recently playing, killed the ottoman and japanese so I got most of their land (Cyrus has a few ottoman cities) and they are wiped out. I already did have coal from the other continent but discovered a new source in former Ottoman territory.

I think its fun when you are lacking a major important resource like coal, oil or horses. It makes the game a challenge to either get it or survive without. Saying that i didnt think coal was that important or am i very wrong?

I dont like the idea that beyond the sword makes it easier by allowing you to get coal when its not in your areas, or maybe this will work in practice better than it sounds.

I find even the odd time when I dont have coal that its the easiest strategic resouce to get the AI to trade... they'll almost always sell it pretty cheap

After conquering my island, my neighbors, and half of another continent, I got my coal... from my ally. Cause I still didn't have any >.< But at least the chinese had to found a new city on some obscure island to get uranium. I think I'll take that city over soon.

What's really infuriating is that the original reason people used it was that it was very common!

I like the way it currently works, mainly because the access to strategic resources should be contested over. It adds some urgency to games when you're good ally right next door has 1 oil reserve, but its just on his side of the border. Well I think I'll go and take that.

I think of all the games I've played, I lost a monarch level game because I conquered half of my continent, and the only victory that was possible was a space race. And sure enough, my continent had 4 aluminum resources, unfortunately they we're all located deeeeeeeep inside the biggest nations territory. Well basically I lost that game, it's impossible to win a space ship without aluminum.
